The Messenger MORE THAN A TOUR By Lakan Mariano

It gets more special every time I visit Israel. There is always something new to learn. I am awed to be in places where familiar Bible stories took place. To walk the streets in Jerusalem where Jesus probably walked. To visit villages around the Sea of Galilee where he did a lot of his ministry. But there can be a downside also. The Holy Land is not holy because of the land. The Holy Land is holy because God chose it as the place to put his people, the Jews, to showcase his glory. It is holy because the incarnate holy God lived and ministered there, suffered and was crucified there, buried and resurrected there according to the scriptures. It is where history will culminate.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre. There was a long line of people kissing the possible rock where Jesus was crucified. Efi, our guide, said that sometimes people wait in line for four hours to see the possible burial site of Jesus .

There is the danger that you can be so awed by being there that you worship the place, instead of the person of God. Before the Israelites settled the land the Lord warned them over and over, "Be careful that you do not forget the LORD" (Deuteronomy 6:12), and "Remember the LORD your God" (8:18). Without a biblical perspective, it is easy to be awed by the place and miss Christ. ~Lakan In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Summer Events Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information Office Hours
