The Messenger DON’T MISS GOD IN THE ORDINARY By Lakan Mariano They probably mean well. The Christian radio announcement sounded very hopeful, very convincing: several things to do to break out of the ordinary and experience God. Bible stories about the parting of the Red Sea, the walls of Jericho collapsing so that the people of God could conquer the city, and Lazarus being raised from the dead, these were awesome manifestations of God’s power. Because of the mountaintop of experience of Peter, James, and John of seeing Jesus transfigured and visiting with Moses and Elijah many have come to expect God showing up only on those mountain-top experiences. Except, Peter, James, and John had to come down from the mountain. Most of our lives are lived in the valleys. Most of our days are ordinary. The disciples of the Lord Jesus knew this. They experienced God in the most mundane of things, like the breaking of bread, walking home trying to figure things out like Cleopas and his companion, taking the ordinary means of transportation to get across the lake, walking by a funeral procession, attending a wedding, attending a crucifixion. In the Old Testament, God surprised people by showing up in the most ordinary of times: while Gideon was hiding and threshing wheat, to a barren woman out on a field, in the midst of a prophet’s darkest depression, while a shepherd was tending his flock in Midian, to a forgotten servant of God behind bars in Egypt. Don’t miss God in the ordinary by expecting fireworks. If you know Christ as your Savior and God, He already said that He is with you to the end of the age, that He will never leave you nor forsake you. He is there as you go to work, when you are running after a toddler, or nursing an aging parent. He is there when you are struggling with your bills, when you are changing diapers, when you go to the doctor’s office. He is there when your spouse In This Issue walks out on you, at the graduation of your child, when you go to church. From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Ministry Opportunity
With Christ, every moment is precious. You don’t have to look for Him. You certainly don't have to climb a mountain to experience Him. He is right there with you.
