The Messenger IT’S A DATE By Lakan Mariano “You forgot your phone,” Kim told me as I opened the car door for her. We had just parked at Outback, our favorite date restaurant. “No I didn’t,” I told her. I have felt bad in the past when Kim went on dates and our time together was interrupted by a call or a text. So I decided that my time with Kim was more important than any phone call that I would get. In the great scheme of things the world would still revolve around the sun and the earth rotate on its axis if I am unavailable for two hours. We walked hand-in-hand to the restaurant. We did not have to wait at all as it was still early in the evening. More like very late afternoon. Our children teased us about having dinner at 5:00 pm. We ordered our usual Victoria’s steak and mixed veggies. As soon as our waiter brought us Outback’s honey wheat bushman bread we tore pieces off of it and put a healthy serving of butter and began to enjoy it. Kim and I generally did not discuss anything serious but we simply chitchatted. We reminisced about our children and we relished talking about the antics of our grandkids. We laughed together and cherished our time together. “Thank you,” she said to me as I took a bite of the delicious bread. “What for?” “The way you look at me.” “Amour,” I said in my best impersonation of Pepe Le Pew. “Ditto.” It is amazing how much is communicated between two people in love without saying anything. I loved those moments with Kim. I miss those moments with Kim. We did not go out regularly on dates out of duty. We went out on dates because we enjoyed and loved each other. Oh, that believers in Jesus Christ would spend time with him listening and talking to him in his word and in prayer not so much out of duty but out of love, because they enjoy his company. “My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God” (Psalm 84:2). ~Lakan
