The Messenger IN LIVING COLOR By Lakan Mariano When we face difficulties we just want relief. Ongoing difficulties have a way of casting a pall over our life. Life can feel like a dreary painting of somber men in gray coats trudging in a gray lifeless winter landscape against the backdrop of gray skies. Living a monochromatic life is not much fun. So we get busy solving our problems. We throw everything we know of religion and social science and finance and medical technology into fixing our problem. It is interesting what David sought when he faced difficulties—enemies advancing, laying siege against him, war (Psalm 27:1-3). “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). You can almost hear one of David’s generals: “Sir, we are under siege. The enemies have surrounded us. We need to act now, not go to church to gaze at the beauty of the LORD.” A lot of believers in Jesus Christ will agree with that sentiment. In today’s pragmatic culture in Christianity, we will jump into action. While action is necessary there is wisdom in David’s sentiment. For far too often our focus is on what we are doing to solve our problems rather than on what God has already done and is doing. To be at home in God’s presence and to gaze on the beauty of the Lord is to see light and color replacing the gray of our life. The appearance of the Lord God is always accompanied by a cascading waterfall of colors. Flashing color and brilliant light, glowing metal, burning coals of fire, torches, brightness and lightning flashing, sparkling like topaz, sparkling like crystal, a throne of lapis lazuli, like the appearance of rainbow. That is just in Ezekiel chapter 1. In John’s Revelation, he described the New Jerusalem as shining with the glory of God, its brilliance like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, like crystal. Instead of concrete slab the foundation dazzles you with the colors of precious stones: jasper, sapphire, agate, emerald, onyx, ruby, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, turquoise, jacinth, amethyst, gold so pure it is transparent (Revelation 21). These colors dazzle believers in Jesus Christ not to escape our problems but to remind us of the beauty of who Christ is and what he has done and what he is doing in redeeming us. The colors not only point us to a future where is no more death or mourning or crying or pain but the colors bring encouragement to our souls. Colors are light diffused. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). To know Christ, to gaze on his beauty, is to live life in living color. ~Lakan
