The Messenger GOD IN PURSUIT By Lakan Mariano Last Saturday afternoon my phone dinged, alerting me I had a text. Death always has a way of shocking you. I had only known the man for about three to four months. I had received a new book I was excited to read so I took off one evening from work and went to a restaurant where I could just sit and read while eating. While waiting for my order, the man slowly walked in, aided by a cane. Then he collapsed, almost like in slow motion, and fell to the floor. I ran to check on him. The manager also came to see if he was okay. I found out his name when the paramedics came and asked him for information. I checked on him the following day at the hospital and visited him regularly from then on. The first time I visited the man at the hospital he thanked me for helping him. I told him that I had actually stopped at a couple of other restaurants that evening but was very unsettled and so I went to the one where we met. I explained to him why I thought the Lord Jesus wanted me to go there. I told him about how the Lord Jesus saved me and the beautiful life that the Lord has given me in him. Every time I visited the man he asked me to talk about the Bible because he said that it calms him down. The last time I visited him, he asked me again to talk about the Lord. I noticed his agitation as I was talking, so I asked him what was the matter. “What you’re talking about is so wonderful, others need to hear it!” “Yes, sir. That is why I do what I do. You are right. The world needs to hear about Jesus.” Hearing about his death made me think how the Lord arranged for my day that day several months ago so that I would be in the same restaurant with this man and get to tell him about the Lord. I thought about how persistent God is in pursuing people. “Lord, you saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed” (Psalm 139:16, NLT). Jesus said, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44). God, in his love, is the one who pursues us.
