The Messenger THE MAIN STORY By Lakan Mariano
I share my stories not so much to share my stories but as serving trays from which people can sample God’s goodness in Christ. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we are the main characters in the story of redemption. King Saul made this terrible mistake.
It was God’s plan to settle his people in the Promised Land. He wanted his blessings on his people to be a showcase of his glory for the nations to see. He told them he was going to fight for them and defeat their enemies. Over and over you see God miraculously giving the Israelites victory. But when Saul was drawn into battle and saw the victory that God was giving them he said, “Cursed be any-
one who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” (1 Samuel 14:24). It was no longer God’s battle, no longer God’s victory, but it was now about avenging himself on his enemies. Our lives as believers are showcases of God’s goodness and grace. When I share my stories, my hope is that people will not only hear the wonderful truths about Christ but they will also see that these truths are not pie-in-the-sky ideas but truths that are part and parcel of everyday life. My prayer is that people will see eternity not only as a future prospect but as a reality that Christ brings into our home, our work, our social interactions, our struggles. I like to think of our stories as believers in Jesus Christ as spotlights on a billboard. They simply illuminate the message. “Remember, our Message is not about ourselves; we’re proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Master. All we are is messengers… If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us” (2 Corinthians 4:5, 7, MSG).
