The Messenger SEVEN SIMPLE WORDS By Lakan Mariano Seven words. Seven simple words. They can be the bridge over the chasm of broken relationships. They can open the door of reconciliation. But often they are words so hard to say. We lived in a typical house on a typical street when our children were growing up. The front yard was adequate but certainly not large enough to contain a game of soccer. So when Micah and Josh would be kicking the ball to each other the ball often would go past our yard into our neighbors’ yards.

The neighbor to the south of us did not mind. There were times when their children came out and played with our children. The neighbors to our north were a different matter. Kim and I were friendly to all our neighbors. Kim took the time to get to know them. We had some of them over to the house for dinner or coffee. Kim often baked cookies and invited some of the neighborhood kids over. The neighbors to our north, an elderly couple, were cautiously friendly to us. They did not like when we mowed a little too close to their yard so from time to time we found small tree branches marking the 38th parallel between their yard and our yard. The wife would come out of her house and scold Micah and Josh when the ball rolled to their side. Kim and I told the boys to try their best not to get the ball to their side and always be respectful. One day Josh walked in our house soaking wet, crying. “Ms. Smith turned the water sprinkler on us,” he muttered between sobs.

I angrily marched over to our neighbor’s house and told Ms. Smith things I should not have said in a way that to this way, embarrasses me. That night I could not sleep. The Lord convicted me of how I spoke to Ms. Smith. I argued with the Lord that she deserved my anger. She had not been nice to Micah and Josh. We had tried our best to be good neighbors. Then scriptures came to mind, like leaves gently floating in the wind. “And forgive us our sins, as we also have forgiven those who sinned against us” (Matthew 6:12). “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). The next morning I rang Ms. Smith’s doorbell. She opened the door greeted me with a snarl I deserved. Those seven simple words struggled to come out of my mouth but eventually did. “I am sorry. Will you forgive me?” I did not just say, “I am sorry,” for that requires no response, even though it expressed how I actually felt. The last four words, “Will you forgive me” is a plea for her to re lease me from my offense and opens the door for reconciliation. Her hard, angry look melted into a smile and an apology for how she treated our boys. We became closer as neighbors after that.

Seven simple words. Seven simple words that can open up so many possibilities. ~Lakan
