The Messenger SIMPLE GIFT I love the sheer look of delight in our grandchildren’s faces when they receive a gift that they really love. There is a simple gift that parents and grandparents can give their children and grandchildren that they desperately need that will not elicit the same immediate delight but will have profound benefit for them. To pray for them. To take our children and grandchildren before the very presence of our God daily. To ask for His blessings and His grace for them. Some of the things Kim and I prayed for, and I still pray for, are things they will not immediately see but will benefit them the rest of their lives and for eternity: • Pray for their salvation, that they will see who Christ is and what He did on the cross, and that they will, by faith, trust Him for their salvation (John 3:16-17; 2 Peter 3:9); • Pray that they will find their joy and delight and purpose and fulfillment in Christ alone (Psalm 34:8; 36:7-9); • Pray that they will grow in their knowledge of Christ (Philippians 3:8); • Pray that if they are to get married, that God will provide a godly mate who will love God and will them and together they will live out and proclaim the gospel to their children and their children’s children until the Lord returns (1 Peter 2:9). Prayer is not a gift that is fancy, may not even be appreciated now, but it is of monumental benefit to our family. As believers in Jesus Christ, if we love our children and grandchildren, we will pray for them. The Apostle Paul, writing to the believers in Thessalonica, said, “We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers” (1 Thessalonians 1:2). May that be true of us about praying for our children and grandchildren.
