The Messenger LAUGHTER By Lakan Mariano They watched in rapt wonder. Then they burst into joyous laughter. Our daughter Rachel read Bible stories every night to all the kids while we were in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Then she read a funny children’s book. Even those of us who are no longer kids loved the time. Hearing the kids laugh and have a good time is like a glass of ice-cold southern sweet tea on a hot Texas summer day. The Bible tells us that “a joyful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). Laughter is not flippancy about life. Neither is it a lack of depth. Rather, for believers in Jesus Christ, it is the sound of confident joy in what God is up to.
After the psalmist extols the greatness of God, he breaks forth in exuberant joy: “Let the heavens be GLAD, and let the earth REJOICE; let the sea ROAR, and all that fills it; let the field EXULT, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest SING FOR JOY before the LORD” (Psalm 96:11-13, emphasis mine).

When you know Christ as your God and as your Shepherd, when you see his majesty and his beauty and his kindness and his grace, when you experience his unfailing love, you, too, can “laugh at the days to come” (Proverbs 31:25). A Jewish proverb says, “As soap is to the body, so laughter is to the soul.” Laughter scrubs off despair and gloom. When you know Christ, you can laugh. ~Lakan
