The Messenger WHITEWASHED TOMBS By Lakan Mariano Across from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is the largest Jewish cemetery in the world. Over the years I had imagined Jesus walking away from the Temple through the Eastern gate down the Kidron Valley and up the Mount of Olives as he warned people about the duplicity of the Pharisees and the scribes. When I first visited Jerusalem I was astounded at how close the Temple Mount is to the Mount of Olives, where the cemetery lies on its eastern slope. It is easy to imagine Jesus saying these words as he started up the slope, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness” (Matthew 23:27-28). Religion and moralism can make you look good to others. But without the saving life of Christ in a person there is only deadness. You can put make-up and dress up a corpse but it remains a corpse. Religion and moralism cannot give you life. Only Jesus can. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep… If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:7, 9-10). All our pursuits for happiness and meaning and fulfillment and, yes, immortality, can only be found in Jesus Christ. ~Lakan In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Summer Events Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information Office Hours
