The Messenger LOVE STORY By Lakan Mariano I turned the television on to see the weather forecast. But I sat there watching the last part of a movie that Kim and I used to watch. I knew the lines, I knew what was coming, yet I could not stop watching Sabrina, with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond. I was mesmerized because deep inside of me there is something wonderfully familiar about a love story. For a guy who thought that one of the best romantic movies of all times was Gladiator, I have found myself watching Phantom of the Opera, An Affair to Remember, Pride and Prejudice, and Sleepless in Seattle since Kim died. There is something about a love story that touches the deepest part of who I am, of who we are. Whether we recognize it or not, our hearts throb for a love lost long ago in the Garden. All our longings for companionship, for a deep and meaningful love relationship, are rooted in that love that was lost when our first parents were driven out of the Garden of Eden because of their rebellion. And somewhere in our memory, we remember the promise of the spurned Lover, God, to send a Savior. The Great Lover, God, was unwilling to let His beloved go, so He sends His Son to die for her, to bring her back to Him. A lot of believers know this by heart:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” That is why, I believe, God compares His relationship with Israel as His wife, and He calls the Church the bride of Christ. The sweet, the deep-seated love I still feel for Kim is but “the beginning,” “the outer fringe,” (Job 26:14) a small taste of what in store for us as believers when our Bridegroom, Christ, returns for us, so that we may live with Him happily ever after. Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love Me?” That is a question we need to ask ourselves: Do I love Christ? ~Lakan
