The Messenger COLLEGE HILLS BAPTIS T CHURCH Volume 1, Issue 17
August 3, 2011
What is your worth? What is your worth? I have seen people struggle all their life because of the incorrect way they determine their worth or value. I have seen lives wrecked because they were told by someone they love that they are worthless, that they will never amount to anything in life. I have also seen people who thought they were important because they were good-looking, or they have a lot of money, or because of their position of power. Some people who find their worth based on affinity or relationship to somebody famous. So, what is it that gives us our worth? The simple, Sunday
school answer is that because God created man, man finds his worth in that. This may seem simplistic, but it is actually a logical and biblical explanation for our worth. For example, if you realize that one your bosses is the son of President Reagan, you would be excited about this fact. The respect and admiration for President Reagan is immediately passed on to his son, whether deserved or not. Logically, in the same way, because God created man, our relationship to him, or more properly, his relationship to us-creator and creature -- gives us worth. Biblically, it is even greater than that. In the creation account,
Mark Your Calendar: God pronounced everything he created "good." On the sixth day, after he created man, he pronounced his creation "very good." The language of Genesis is even more telling: "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness...'" (Genesis 1:26). In the more detailed account of man's creation in Genesis 2, it says this: "The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." (v. 7) The word "formed" is the same word translated "intent" in Genesis 6:5. Cont. on p. 3

The Messenger What Is Your Worth? (cont. from p. 1) So God "formed" man with a definite intention for his existence, which is to "image" him. Notice also in v. 7 where God was the one who "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." God was not simply giving man ability for animation, but he was giving man his very Spirit, to allow him to fully commune and fellowship with God, and to enable him to "image" God. Of course, man sinned in Genesis 3, and man died spiritually, God took his Spirit away from man, and he also died physically
(Genesis 5, with the exception of Enoch). But even in fallen man, there are the signs of his original purpose. Man's exercise of his will, his creativity, his sense of morals and ethics (even some atheists insist that you can have morality and ethics apart from God), these all point to God, and to God's purpose in man.
and his resurrection. Jesus bought us with his own blood, his very life.
If you buy a new car and have it insured, the insurance people will ask you what is the "worth" of your car, meaning what did you pay for it. In the same way, a believer's worth is what Jesus Christ paid for him in the slavery market. Believers are Here is the beautiful pretty expensive part of understandstuff, not because of ing our worth.
