The Messenger DOES GOD KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH? By Lakan Mariano It is a dark place to be when you feel alone. When you feel like no one knows what you are going through, and nobody cares. Not even God. I was reminded this morning reading a familiar story how untrue that is. Jews normally took the long route from Jerusalem to Galilee through Perea, east of the Jordan River, to avoid going through Samaria. John’s Gospel tells us that Jesus “had to go through Samaria” (4:4). Jesus had to go through Samaria because he wanted to talk to a despised Samaritan woman who braved the heat of the day to be alone at Jacob’s well, to avoid the furtive looks and wagging tongues. Unlucky in love with five ex -husbands, she had given up on marriage and now just had a live-in boyfriend. I can only imagine how she felt. Ashamed, alone, hopeless, tired. Then this Jew had the audacity to speak to her. “Will you give me a drink?” She could not believe it.
“How come you, a Jew, are asking me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?’ (Jews in those days wouldn’t be caught dead talking to Samaritans)” (v. 9, MESSAGE). John tells us that Jesus reveals himself to her as the awaited Messiah, and the woman was so excited that she forgot what she came to the well for and forgot her shame and rushed to town incredulous, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (v. 29). John does not tell us whether the woman became a believer but simply that many in town became believers because of her testimony and that many more became believers after hearing Jesus. I would like to think that she did. The woman must have replayed that encounter with Jesus over and over in her head over the years. How the Messiah sat there by the well, looking tired, looked her in the eye and asked her for a drink. Does God know you and what you are going through? Yes. Not only does he know what you are going through, he also knows your real need. And he offers you what he offered the Samaritan woman. “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (v. 10). The gift of God is Christ and his finished work at the cross. Only he satisfies. ~Lakan
