The Messenger WHAT DOES HOPE LOOK LIKE? By Lakan Mariano Most of the time our default in looking for hope in desperate situations is a change in circumstances. One more medical miracle for a loved one being ravaged by cancer. Winning the lottery to solve all financial woes. A wayward son or daughter to come home. What does hope look like when you are driven from your home? When your life is in danger? When you are being relentlessly pursued by your enemy? When your enemy and assassin is your own son? Over the years I go back and read and reread and think about Psalm 63, a psalm David wrote when his own son Absalom usurped his throne and was in pursuit of his father to kill him. I cannot imagine the emotional turmoil that David went through. David feared for his life. He must have been angry with Absalom for what he was doing. Yet he loved him. David instructed his men as they were about to face Absalom’s army, “Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake” (2 Samuel 18:5). David’s sentiment, his hope, that he recorded for us in Psalm 63 while in a literal and emotional wilderness is counterintuitive. Its focus was not on a change of his circumstances. Its focus was on a Person. God. “God—you’re my God! I can’t get enough of you! I’ve worked up such hunger and thirst for God, traveling across dry and weary deserts” (v. 1, MESSAGE). David’s insatiable hunger was not for change, but for God. “So here I am in the place of worship, eyes open, drinking in your strength and glory. In your generous love I am really living at last! My lips brim praises like fountains. I bless you every time I take a breath; My arms wave like banners of praise to you” (vv. 2-4, MESSAGE). Wait, David! How can you say, “I am really living at last!” when your own son is trying to kill you? How can you praise God when you are running for your life and you are driven from home and your loved ones by your own son? “I eat my fill of prime rib and gravy; I smack my lips. It’s time to shout praises!” (vv. 5, MESSAGE). The reason David could praise God was that his pleasure and delight and his hope were not found in a change of his circumstance but in a Person. God. This is reflected in two other psalms he wrote: In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Summer Events Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him” (Psalm 34:8). “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11). Hope is not found in a change of your circumstances. Hope is only found in trusting the Lord Jesus Christ. “LORD Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you” (Psalm 84:12). ~Lakan

The Messenger Adopt Students Make an impact in the lives of college students by adopting them! We have college students from around the country and around the world coming to our doorsteps. We are looking for couples/ families who will adopt them. Two students per couple/family. What does adoption entail? Pray for them regularly; Have them over for dinner or take out to dinner at least once a month; Invite them over for birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other family events. Text or call them at least once every two weeks. Share your salvation testimony and the gospel with them. Write your name on your connection card and the words “Adopt Students” and we will pair you up with your college students.
