The Messenger ONLY IN CHRIST By Lakan Mariano We love to hear about the love of God. That is why we love love stories. Because there is something deep in all of us that longs to be loved. But the love of God is not expressed in simply making us feel better. It is not just a warm hug. It is not an ooey-gooey feeling that comes and goes. The love of God was expressed to its fullest extent in Christ and His finished work at the cross. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). A friend years ago let me listen to a John Tesh music that has then President Bush speaking at the National Cathedral a few days after 9-11. President Bush ended his speech by reading from Romans 8 about the love of God: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.” He stopped there. He omitted the most important part of the text: “…the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” If you remove Christ from the book of Romans, the whole book collapses. The love of God is not some mushy sentimentalism. The love of God is expressed in the concrete and historical violent death of Jesus the Messiah on the cross as payment for our sins. “For our sake God made Him (Christ) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Only in Christ can you have the fullness of life. Only in Christ can you truly enjoy the pleasures of God. Only in Christ can you feel God’s warm and protective embrace. Only in Christ can your longing to be loved fulfilled. Yes, only in Christ. ~Lakan In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information
