The Messenger EXPECT GOD TO ANSWER By Lakan Mariano When you call someone you expect him to answer. That should be our attitude as believers in Jesus Christ when we pray. Prayer is not mumbling things into thin air. Prayer is communicating with a real living Person, God. He speaks to you primarily through his word, the Bible, and you speak back to him. King Saul prayed one day to see if he should pursue the Philistines, “but God did not answer him that day” (1 Samuel 14:37). Saul's immediate reaction was to ask the LORD, “Why have you not answered your servant today?” (v. 41). As believers we need to learn to pray expecting God to answer. We need to ask the Lord for the wisdom to understand the things he is telling us, the faith to trust him completely for however he answers, and for hearts to delight in our God who is walking and talking to us. David prayed that way. He prayed expectantly. “In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly” (Psalm 5:3, NIV). But more than simply expecting God to answer his prayers, he expected God to consume his whole being with his presence. The NIV's “I lay” is a Levitical term for ordering the sacrifice on the altar. The ESV (English Standard Version) captures the sense for us: “O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I PREPARE A SACRIFICE FOR YOU AND WATCH.” Eugene Peterson's The Message Bible captures the sense even better. “Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on your altar and watch for fire to descend.” When you pray, expect God to answer you. More than that, expect him to change you, to totally consume you. ~Lakan In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Summer Events Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information Office Hours
