The Messenger TREASURING GOD’S GIFT By Lakan Mariano They never dated. He had no clue about her personality, her dreams, her tendencies. He had no clue if they were compatible or not. They had never spoken to each other before. They are meeting for the first time. On their wedding day. God was the One who gave the bride to the groom. This was the first man’s response to God’s gift to him of a bride:

“The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man’” (Genesis 2:23). The first recorded word spoken by man was a poem. He must have been so enraptured by her beauty and God’s gracious gift that he broke out in beautiful Hebrew poetry. As clumsy as men have gotten with their speech, there is something special when husbands write love poems to their wives. Husbands, when was the last time you were enraptured by your wife that she turned you into a poet? Maybe a bad poet, but a poet nonetheless?

The beautiful truth contained in this narrative is that the man never questioned God’s gift, but he accepted her, not because he knew her, but because he knew the gracious God who gave her to him. We accept our mate on the basis of who God is and not on the basis of who our mate is or how our mate behaves. As believers in Jesus Christ, treasuring your mate as God’s gracious gift to you opens the door to overlooking faults, being quick to forgive, and always on the lookout for what God is up to in your marriage, excitedly expectant of the very best. Because that is what God does. “This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike ‘What’s next, Papa?’” (Romans 8:15, MSG).
