The Messenger SOAKING IN THE WORD There is a lot of value in the different Bible reading plans that take you to an Old Testament book one day and to a New Testament book the next day then to the Psalms. Simply being in God's word is good. But I want to encourage you to read one book at a time. Large chunks of it. Genesis has fifty chapters. If you read five chapters a day you will read through the whole book in ten days. Reading large chunks through a book allows you to see the flow of the narrative (as in Genesis) or the flow of the argument (as in Romans). It also keeps you from taking verses out of context. One of my friends here in Kenya asked me about the verse where Jesus says, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20). I explained to her that this does not mean that when you are reading the bible or praying by yourself, as much as Jesus wants to be with you he can't, because there has to be at least two or three of you. This verse is in the context of making things right with another believer who has sinned against you. Jesus says you approach him and point things out to him and if he listens, you are reconciled. But if he does not listen, "take one or two others along" (v. 16), then Jesus cites Deuteronomy 19:15, "so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."

I apologized to those attending our meetings in Nakuru. So much of what the American church has exported to this country is the health, wealth, and prosperity gospel. It is easy to twist scriptures when you take it out of context. I challenged them to be like the noble Bereans who "examined the scriptures every day" (Acts 17:11) to check out if what the visiting preacher said was biblical. The preacher they checked out was no other than the Apostle Paul. I challenged them not to Wescriptures. appreciate the time we got wealth, to spend believe anything any muzungu (white person) says but to check everything against the The health, teaching God's word at Imani Radio in and prosperity preachers they get on television has poisoned churches here in Kenya. Kitale.

The answer is knowing Christ and who we are in Christ through God's word. And we cannot know God's word if we do not soak ourselves in God's word. Every day. All the time. Where God's word saturates our minds and beats in our hearts. This begins with the pastors and Bible teachers. In our personal time in God's word and in our preaching and teaching. ~Lakan In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Summer Events Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information Office Hours
