The Messenger HEARING GOD CORRECTLY By Lakan Mariano It has been a while since I read C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. I read it for myself when I was in my twenties and I read it to all our three children. I thought I knew the characters and the stories, so when a friend was talking about it recently it surprised me that I did not remember some the details my friend mentioned. Years ago, Tom Rodgers (pastor of Grace Church in Wichita Falls for many years who is now with the Lord) and I were talking about reading our Bible. I told him I get frustrated sometime because there are things I read I do not remember. Tom asked me, “Do you remember what you had for lunch three Wednesdays ago?” After a few seconds of trying to think, I said, “No, I don't.” “Even though you do not remember, I bet it nourished you.” Tom was right. The Bible is not like an ordinary book that you may only retain so much. Every time a believer in Jesus Christ reads his Bible, the Holy Spirit of God is there to help him understand what God is saying. “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means” (1 Corinthians 2:14, NLT). And the same Holy Spirit of God who helps us understand God's Word, the Bible, is also the same one who reminds us of what He has taught us. But He can only remind us of things we have learned. One of the biggest obstacles to understanding the Bible is to pluck a verse here and a verse there. When we do that we neglect the context of where a verse is found and often we totally misapply it. It took God 66 books to communicate to us who He is and His plan of redemption through Christ. Read or listen to it at length, one or more chapters at a time. Get the sense of what the whole book is about. Imagine the story that is being portrayed. Get into the emotions that God was feeling, like in Hosea 11. Feel the texture of the text—the reverberating antiphonal praise of the seraphim in Isaiah 6. Tremble at the sight of thick darkness and fire that blazed into the heavens at Mt. Horeb with In This Issue bolts of lightning and the earth shaking when God spoke. Hear the rustling of the From the Pastor wings of the thousands upon thousands of angels in Revelation 7. When you read the Bible book-by-book, you get sense of the big picture of who God is and what He has planned. If you have never done this, will you start today? ~Lakan
