The Messenger BE BLESSED By Lakan Mariano Some of our friends who are doing church-planting in a certain language group in southern Philippines were lamenting the fact that they do not have the Old Testament in their language. Another friend who did mission work in Russia told me about believers in a village who had such a scarcity of Bibles that they tore up a Bible into books so that several families can each have a book. Then they would exchange books.
We are so blessed in the United States to have access to so many Bibles, in different translations. I have an ESV (English Standard Version) in my car. I use the NIV (New International Version) and the ALT (American Literary Version), a revision of the ASV (American Standard Version) for my morning readings. When I am studying, most of the reference materials I use are keyed in on the KJV (King James Version) so I use the KJV. I also read the book I am preaching on in the NASB (New American Standard Version), the NET (New English Translation), and the NLT (New Living Translation). I love to leisurely read The Message Bible, a paraphrase. Some believers are concerned about the accuracy of some translations so they disparage the translations they think are not as word-for-word accurate. A friend who is a Bible translator with New Tribes Mission was asked about translations and he teasingly (sort of) said, “Ask them if they speak at least two languages. If they don't, they have no part in this conversation.” Find a translation you can easily understand and enjoy it. Read it, listen to it, study it, meditate on it, memorize it, enjoy it. Go through books of the Bible at a time so you can get a sense of what the whole book is about. Write down on a 3X5 card passages that jumped out at you. Tape the card on your dashboard and think through what its saying as you drive. Treasure God's Word and you will be blessed. “Blessed is the one... whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on His law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:1, 2-3) In This Issue From the Pastor AWANA Clubs Events & Upcoming Dates Ministry Opportunity Youth Ministries College Ministries Contact Information
