The Messenger EXPERIENCING JESUS IN THE ORDINARY By Lakan Mariano While driving recently, I turned the radio on trying to find some good preaching when I heard a radio preacher bellow, “Do something spectacular for God! You cannot be satisfied with your ordinary life, live an extraordinary life!” I was once at a pastors’ meeting where the theme was Caleb’s plea to Joshua: “Give me this mountain which the LORD promised me at that time!” (Joshua 14:12). We were then all asked, “Have you asked God for your mountain?” What was one man’s plea (Caleb’s) became a universal mantra for success. Peter, James, and John had a mountain top experience when they saw the Lord Jesus transformed into his glory. Elijah had his mountain top experience when he defeated the priests of Baal at Mt. Carmel. But most of the Christian life is lived out in the valleys. While Jesus was present with his disciples on the mountain top, he was also present with them when they feared for their lives in the midst of a storm in the Sea of Galilee. While God was with Elijah on the mountain top, he was also present with him when he felt exhausted, all alone, and running for his life. Mountain top experiences are wonderful. But most of our lives will be lived out in the valleys. Christ is not only present in the spectacular. Christ is also present in the ordinary things in life, like changing diapers, cooking a meal for your family, going to work, tending to an independent toddler. Christ is present not only when you were blown off your socks at a worship service but also in the week-in, week-out simple singing of songs of worship and listening to God’s Word preached. Jesus said, “Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). If you know Christ as your savior, he is always with you. On the mountain tops. And in the valleys. Jesus is with you until the end of the age. ~ Lakan
