The Messenger DON’T COME TO THE GARDEN ALONE By Lakan Mariano Over the years, many Christian friends have shared with me about the struggle they have in spending regular daily time in God’s Word and in prayer. In my early years walking with the Lord Jesus, I thought that my individual time with the Lord would lead to a desire to be part of the larger church. And there is a sense that that is true. But what I have discovered over the years is that my time with other men in our small group, with our home group, and weekly worship is what pushes and urges me to spend time alone in God’s Word and in prayer. It started with my weekly meetings with Scott Steele when I was in my twenties who pushed and encouraged me to read God’s Word. I hated the thought of meeting with Scott and had nothing to share from what I read. Then after Scott went to seminary, the Lord brought Ken Sheppard into my life. There were countless times when after meeting with Ken I could not wait to get back to my office to dig into my Bible. I often asked him questions and he responded by asking me questions about certain texts. “Look them up and let me know what you discover the next time we meet,” was a common response I got from Ken. He taught me how to look at the text by asking simple questions answerable by the text—who, what, where, why, how—and simply observing what the text says. It was amazing to me the first time I saw how scripture texts and Bible stories fit into a larger narrative. To this day I get amazed at new things the Lord teaches me by simply reading His Word. A young man came to see me because he was struggling with the idea that he cannot by himself, alone, walk with Christ. I pinched off a stem with a leaf from a plant on my desk and I laid it down. “What do you think will happen to this stem a few days from now,” I asked him. “Of course, it will die,” he responded. “It is the same with you if you if you divorce yourself from the local church.” Christ gifted the church with pastors and leadIn This Issue ers “ to equip his people for works of service, so that the body From the Pastor of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and AWANA Clubs in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attainEvents & ing to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians Upcoming Dates 4:12-13). Ministry Opportunity “People,” “the body of Christ,” “we all,” “unity,” all point to us being part of a larger group. It sounds romantic to come to the Youth Ministries Garden alone, but it is better when you are part of a group.
