The Messenger The Pharisees' single-minded hatred for Jesus blinded them to the obvious. The Twelve were just a tad better. After seeing Jesus multiply a few bread and fish to feed several thousands of people on two separate occasions, they thought Jesus was getting on to them for forgetting to bring bread (Mark 8:14-21). Even for believers in Jesus Christ, our daily routine can numb us to seeing Christ, and seeing the big picture of what He is up to. I remember getting home one evening not remembering which way I took to get home. We can sleepwalk through the day, our eyes open, but not seeing. We can miss the joy of ordinary conversations, the fun of seeing and hearing little children play. The last few days have been that way for me. Preoccupied with tomorrow, I have missed the sweetness of today. Until the fresh wind of God’s Spirit gently blew on my face and warmed my heart this morning. The Holy Spirit did this through the book of Revelation. There was a time in my early Christian life I would not dare open the pages of this book. Too depressing. Too scary. Too much I could not understand. And when I finally dove into the book guided by sermons and commentaries, I felt like I had visited the meat markets of my childhood, where the book was butchered into chunks: the seven churches in Asia Minor, a vision of heaven, a vision of the Lamb, the seals, the trumpet judgments, and so forth. And that was how I read it. Until these words leaped out of chapter one: “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it…” The book is meant to be read all at once, to be heard as a single story. And when you read all at once you cannot miss the main subject of this book of prophecy—Jesus Christ.
“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance” (Revelation 1:12-16). John must have struggled for words to describe this glorious vision of Christ and after he put together adjectives and verbs and nouns, he “fell at his feet as though dead” (1:17). You cannot leave the presence of the glorious Christ with a tablet full of notes. You worship! In This Issue

Christ in his glory. Christ worshiped. Christ who will judge. Christ will cast Satan and his demons and all those who have rejected him into hell. Christ the bridegroom returning for his bride, and together they will live happily ever after. This is the Christ who walks me today. The same Christ who gives flavor and purpose to my daily routine. The same Christ who hikes with me and gives wonder to ordinary rocks and familiar trees. For him, and to him, I am thankful. ~Lakan
