The Messenger SEEING THE BIG PICTURE By Lakan Mariano When God says, “give thanks in all circumstances,” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) it may seem like an unsympathetic, even callous, command. But it is not. God understands the struggles and the heartaches we go through. But he wants us to see the big picture of what he is doing in redeeming believers in Jesus Christ. When we see the big picture of redemption, from the fall of man, to Jesus’ finished work at the cross, to the future glory we will experience, we can give thanks in all circumstances. I am not thankful that Kim died. I miss her every single day. But I am thankful that God was the one who was in charge of every single day of her life. I am thankful for his wonderful grace in sustaining us through her illness. I am thankful for the laughter and the joy the Lord gave us even when times were tough. I am thankful for the very precious gift of thirty some odd years of knowing Kim. I am thankful for our children and their spouses and our grandchildren that God blessed Kim and me with. I am thankful for the Lord giving me a small taste through our marriage of the deliciousness of what we will have in the future with Jesus. I am thankful that “Death has been swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54), that death no longer has the last say. That victory is the believer’s, and the Victor, Jesus Christ, walks with you in the valleys and the mountain tops and the thickets and the wilderness and in the storms. That is why believers can give thanks in all circumstances. Christ’s presence and all the blessings that his presence brings are so great that giving thanks in all circumstances makes sense. But it is not the only thing we are to experience, so we are also commanded to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). When we take our eyes off our troubles long enough to see the big picture of what Jesus is doing from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, we will rejoice, we will pray, and we will give thanks in all circumstances. ~ Lakan
