The Messenger WHEN YOUR PRAYERS DON'T SEEM TO WORK By Lakan Mariano

There are times when your prayers feel like they don't work. “I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me! When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the LORD. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted” (Psalm 77:1-2). Have you been there? Are you there right now? You know God's promises to you as a follower of Jesus Christ, but right now those promises seem empty. Your troubles have robbed you of sleep, and you have forgotten what rest feels like. “LORD, you don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray! Has the LORD rejected me forever?” (Psalm 77:4, 7).

When your prayers feel empty, remember who God is. Call to mind what how He shepherded His people in the wilderness. “But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago... You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations...” (Psalm 77:11-14). Make a list of who you are to God: He calls you His beloved, He chose you before He threw down the foundations of the world (Ephesians 1:4), He chose you to proclaim to the world His excellencies (1 Peter 2:9), His Holy Spirit set you apart for salvation and to share in Christ's glory at His appearing (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14).
