Vol. 7 Iss. 44 12/11/17
The Messenger THE GOD WHO SAVES Reprint of article by Lakan Mariano dated 12/23/14 Christmas is the incredible story of God becoming man. To do the one thing that man cannot do for himself. Let us keep in mind who Jesus was and is as we celebrate Christmas. "On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived." Luke 2:21 Jesus. The common Jewish name Joshua, which means "Yahweh saves." No better name for the One who came "to seek and save the lost" (Luke 19:10). For saving man from his sins is Jesus' primary and ultimate work. Too often we have reduced Jesus to a divine genie at our beck and call. Or a physician who heals us. Or a financier who makes sure we have money. Or a therapist who helps us feel better. Or a magician who does tricks for us. Except Jesus is God who condescended to become man to suffer and die on the cross once and for all to bring us to God. Saving sinful man is His mission, His work. “Save us, God our SAVIOR!" (1 Chronicles 16:35) "My shield is God Most High, who SAVES the upright in heart" (Psalm 7:10) "They forgot the God who SAVED them" (Psalm 106:21) "Truly you are a God... the God and SAVIOR of Israel" (Isaiah 45:15) "But Israel will be SAVED by the LORD with an everlasting SALVATION" (Isaiah 45:17) "And Mary said: 'My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my SAVIOR'" (Luke 1:46-47) "This is good, and pleases God our SAVIOR, who wants all people to be SAVED and to come to a knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:3-4) "Jesus has SAVED us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace" (2 Timothy 1:9) "This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins" (1 John 4:10) "I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from Me there is no SAVIOR" (Isaiah 43:11). Jesus. The God who saves. God's most precious gift. God's Promise fulfilled.
