The Messenger STAND ON BIBLICAL REALITIES By Lakan Mariano Many in our churches just want a spiritual diet of positive messages. But I am thankful that God preserved for us the struggles that godly people like David went through. For as much as many want to avoid the harsh realities of life, those realities come anyway. “How long, Lord? Will you forget me for ever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?” (Psalm 13:1-2). Trouble is a common malady shared by all. There is not a bullet-proof vest that can shield you from them. Jesus told his disciples as much. “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows” (John 16:33, NLT). Being a believer in Jesus Christ does not exempt one from life's troubles. But believers in Jesus Christ have a foundation that will make them stand and flourish in the midst of life's storms. The reality of life's troubles that Jesus mentions is sandwiched by two realities:
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Our peace as believers in Jesus Christ does not come from the change of our circumstances but from Christ. And the reason we can be strong and full of hope in the face of great trials is because Jesus has overcome the world. We already know that the trials of these life will end in victory. David, writing psalm 13, understood this. “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the LORD’s praise, for he has been good to me” (Psalm 13:5-6). By the way, don't miss this important point in this psalm. It was a song to be sung by the whole congregation. “For the director of music. A psalm of David.” You belong to a community. There is no such thing as Lone Ranger Christianity. We share our joys and our sorrows. ~Lakan
