Vol. 7 Iss. 43 12/5/17
The Messenger THE REAL ISSUE By Lakan Mariano When we struggle to believe God, we miss the obvious. With five loaves and two fish, Jesus fed five thousand men plus women and children. After supper, the disciples gathered the leftovers--twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish, one basket per disciple. Not long after that, Jesus fed four thousand men plus women and children with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. After supper, the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. When Jesus and his disciples got into a boat, he told them, “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” Jesus was warning them against the hypocrisy and false teaching of the Pharisees and of Herod. But the disciples missed the obvious. They thought Jesus was chastising them because they only have one loaf of bread with them on the boat. The disciples saw Jesus feed the five thousand and then the four thousand with a few loaves of bread and some fish. They themselves collected basketfuls of leftovers. Then they worried about not having bread.
Jesus asked them, “Do you still not understand?” Don’t be too hard on the disciples. Many believers today are guilty of the same thing. Maybe you struggle believing God for his promises. The same God who dropped bread from heaven and made water gush forth from a rock in the desert, the same God who fed the five thousand and the four thousand, is the same God we have today. He has not changed. His power has not been diminished. His love for his children has not waned. His care for us has not slipped. You can trust him. You can trust Jesus to be true to his Word and his promises. The issue is never about the bread—whether he will provide for us or not. The issue is whether we trust him or not. ~ Lakan

The goal of the College Ministry at College Hills is to be a place where students can join in community, study of the Word of God and enjoy life with other believers. As a church College Hills desires to Make Disciples, Who Make Disciples, Who Make Disciples... and that attitude carries very much into the life of the College Ministry.
