The Messenger MEN ARE WIMPS I don’t know how they do it. The Bible, speaking to husbands, says, “live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman” (1 Peter 3:7). I often paraphrase the part about a woman being weaker as “being more delicate,” like fine china. Men are like camping dishes, they are hard to break physically. But there is a part of women that defies the strength of muscles. I have been home the last two days with aches and pains and fever. I have lied around, fallen asleep everywhere-- on the recliner, in front of the computer, in the back porch.. Just as I was feeling sorry for myself, I thought about our daughter Rachel. Just a couple of weeks ago, she had similar symptoms but she still took care of Nehemiah and Emberly, still did the regular housework. Our daughter-in-law Cami was very sick recently and she still managed to take care of the kids and her other housework. I have never heard our other daughter-in-law, Lindsay, complain about caring for Adrie and the young girl she was keeping when she was sick. Muscle-for-muscle, yes, men are stronger. But when men get sick, we become like big babies. These women, who are the “weaker partner,” often times exhibit a strength that defies their physical and physiological make up. I don’t know how they do it. I was in the delivery room for all our three children. I didn’t see how Kim did it. She relied on me quoting her scriptures when she was in incredible pain. I wasn’t very helpful. “How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes behind your veil are doves. Your hair is like a flock of goats descending from the hills of Gilead…” (Song of Solomon 4:1) Afterwards, I thought about how Kim was. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. In This Issue Her children arise and call her blessed; From the Pastor her husband also, and he praises her” (Proverbs 31:25-28).

I say the same thing about Rachel, Cami, and Lindsay. Most of us men are such wimps when it comes to pain that God was very wise in letting women have babies. If God had chosen the men to have babies, there wouldn’t be a lot of being fruitful and multiplying. -Lakan
