DEAN OF STUDENTS

WELCOME Hello Embry-Riddle Families, I want to welcome you on behalf of the Daytona Beach campus. We look forward to supporting our Eagles and working with you as partners in this educational journey. It’s my sense of community, as an alumna and 20-year employee of Embry-Riddle, which drives my approach to working with students, faculty, staff, administration, and families. In our campus community, we want to be respectful of others, giving of our time, and open to new and exciting experiences. We recognize the unique attributes of students and that each person brings something valuable to our campus. We can learn from each other and share our diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Although academics are a priority, let’s work together to encourage students to participate in various events, activities, and offerings that can only enhance their career potential and build their connection to our community. Ask them to compete on an academic-focused team, cheer on the Eagle Athletics, join one of the 200+ student organizations, and enjoy (safely, of course) the college experience.

support in the areas of career preparation; leadership; living learning opportunities; and the wellness of the mind, body, and soul. Families, it’s important to keep the lines of communication open with your Eagle, both to help them through their college careers and to encourage their independence as they work through challenges. As the Dean of Students, I have the amazing opportunity to advocate for and support students while challenging them to be the best people and professionals they can be. It’s a unique position to be in and one that I commit myself to each day. Thank you, Lisa S. Kollar Dean of Students

Through Student Affairs — including Career Services, Center for Faith & Spirituality, Counseling Center, Health Services, Housing & Residence Life, and Student Engagement & Student Union — we offer resources and

PARENT & FAMILY ASSOCIATION

WELCOME As a parent or family member of an EmbryRiddle student, we want to welcome you to the Embry-Riddle family and offer you the opportunity to join the Daytona Beach Parent and Family Association — no dues and no commitments except to stay informed! Members enjoy a 10% discount at the campus bookstore by using the code “PAR10” (does not apply to books), which can be used for on-line purchases as well. In order to become a member, we ask that you sign up online for our Parent & Family Experience Newsletter, erau.campusesp.com. Once signed up, you can customize the newsletter to your personal preferences, and we will have the ability to email you announcements/alerts similar to the ones that your student receives through campus communications. Another benefit of connecting with the University through the newsletter is that you will have access to information about campus events such as Orientation, Preview Day, Family Weekend, and Open House, as well as student events, competitions, research, and awards. Our mission is to create and foster a collaborative partnership between our parents and families and the professional staff of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus — a relationship based on mutual respect, two-way communication, and collegiality while constantly striving to provide the best educational experience possible for our students. The leadership of the Daytona Beach Parent and Family Association is the Parent Advisory Council (PAC), a small group of volunteers

who represent the interests of all ERAU Daytona Beach parents and families in conjunction with the ERAU Parent and Family Relations team. Along with assisting with outreach to current and prospective families, members are expected to be proactive and bring new ideas to campus administration designed to improve the educational experiences of our students and their families. This work is generally done remotely although whenever possible, PAC members are encouraged to be on campus to assist at various events like Orientation, Open House, Family Weekend, and Preview Day. Along with the PAC, we have a team of Parent Ambassadors located strategically around the United States who act as mentors and represent ERAU at various events such as Accepted Student Receptions (ASRs) and Regional Admissions Presentations (RAPs) where they help answer questions for prospective parents and students. These parent and family members donate their time at events near their residence. If you are interested in becoming involved as a Parent Ambassador or you have any questions, please feel to contact us at 386-226-7954 or dbparent@erau.edu. We look forward to hearing from you soon! The alert function will allow us to notify you in case of emergency on campus, and the calendar will keep you up to date about holidays, breaks, deadlines, and events. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is the federal law designed to protect the privacy of and limit access to educational records. Your Eagle can grant access to educational records by assigning Auxiliary Access to those who they wish to designate. If your Eagle does not grant this access to you, University staff will be prohibited from sharing information with you. See more on FERPA, including instructions for granting access, at erau.edu/ferpa. To maximize aid, be sure to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year when it becomes available in the month of October. Tuition is due each semester ten days before the start of classes. If payment is not submitted by the due date, your Eagle will lose the classes they have scheduled for the semester. Remember, changes to your Eagle’s class schedule or course of study can impact aid, so they should be sure to consult with an academic and financial aid counselor when making changes.

RESIDENCE LIFE Living and Learning on Campus There are so many advantages to living on campus, it’s hard to name them all. Studies show that students who live on campus earn a better overall GPA, are happier, and make friends more quickly. Themed communities in the residence halls group students according to interest or major, and programming throughout the year brings fun social activities to engage and support residents. All new students are required to live on campus for the first two academic years, with some

exemptions for transfer students and those who live locally. The nine campus residence halls feature a variety of floor plans and amenities, and all have easy access to eateries, classrooms, and academic resources. Campus housing is in demand, so make sure your Eagle submits a housing contract by the deadline each year. Contact Housing and Residence Life at 386-323-8000 or visit the website to learn more, daytonabeach.erau.edu/campus-life/housing.

CAREER SERVICES Career Planning 101 Embry-Riddle’s industry reputation attracts employers around the globe seeking the specialized skills they know they’ll find in our students and graduates. How can your Eagle leverage the tools offered through the Career Services Office (CSO) to land their dream job? Mapping the process right from the start will set your student on the right path, so offer encouragement every step of the way:

Freshman year: Information gathering is key. Your Eagle will want to visit the CSO and get to know the Program Manager for their major, and attend company information sessions as well as the semi-annual Career Expo. While it may be too early to apply for jobs or internships, it’s never too early to begin to build a network of connections and take advantage of opportunities to develop and enhance career readiness skills necessary for workplace success.

Sophomore year: Building a strong

can demonstrate skills that look great on a resume, such as team work and collaboration, or leadership and professionalism.

Junior year: Cooperative education (co-op) and internships offer real-world experience plus college credit. Visiting the CSO to learn about the co-ops and internships that are available is the place to start. Your student will gain more than experience — they’ll network with professionals and learn about the global industry they seek to serve.

Senior year: Your Eagle should be well on

the path to their goals having devoted time and energy to the job search all along the way. Connect with the CSO for resume review, mock interviews, and advice on negotiation. Career development doesn’t stop at graduation. Encourage your Eagle to stay in touch with faculty, get involved with the Alumni Network, and explore professional development opportunities to keep current with industry.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Maintaining a strong grade point average (GPA), keeping up with extracurriculars, and staying on track for graduation are challenges that face every college student. That’s why Embry-Riddle is dedicated to your Eagle’s needs and provides the tools, systems, and professional staff that lead to success. Academic Advisors consult with students to create a long-term academic plan, help them register for the right courses, and reach out to those who find themselves struggling in class. The Academic Advancement Center in the College of Arts & Sciences offers free tutoring at convenient times. Additional tutoring and support services are available for specific audiences — including flight students, veterans, international students, and first-generation students. Your student will be expected to take a College Success course, such as UNIV 101, to enhance their transition to college life on the Embry-Riddle campus. Embry-Riddle strives to create a culture of knowledge discovery through research. The Office of Undergraduate Research engages undergraduate students in faculty-mentored research that is both faculty and student-led. STUDENT COMPETITIONS At Embry-Riddle, our students are often more interested in aviation, robotics, space, and engineering than in football and tailgate parties. That’s why you’ll see ERAU Eagles participating in competitions you may not even know about! Cheer them on as they earn recognition, gain skills, and win awards!

14

The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) hosts seven different competitions each year and ERAU has historically been the only University to compete in all. Categories are air, land, and water and teams develop the robotic systems to perform in each. It’s a great way for students to apply their STEM education outside the classroom. Learn more at robonation.org.

Baja SAE is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Teams of students from all over the world design and build small off-road cars to race against one another in the harshest elements of rough terrain. Embry-Riddle’s Women’s Baja SAE team is historically the only team completely comprised of females. Learn more at sae.org.

The National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) supports aviation education and safety and provides an arena for collegiate aviation competition. Students from Embry-Riddle’s residential campuses participate each year and are often the teams that can’t be beat! The winners of regional competitions, or SAFECON, move ahead to compete at NIFA in contests that include landings, navigation, pre-flight, and flight instruction. Learn more at safecon.nifa.aero.

The EcoCAR3 Competition is a premier collegiate engineering program that gives teams from sixteen North American universities the challenge of redesigning a Chevrolet Camaro into a hybrid-electric car that will reduce environmental impact, while maintaining the muscle and performance expected from this iconic American car. This will be the third time Embry-Riddle has been invited to participate in North America’s premier collegiate automotive engineering competition. Learn more at campusgroups.erau.edu/ecocar.

PARENT-TO-PARENT EAGLE ADVICE The Power of Partnering: Parent to Parent Providing parental support from a distance can be frustrating in many ways. Advice from parents who have successfully navigated common college struggles can be invaluable. That’s why we encourage parents to engage one another through social media like the ERAU DB Parents & Family Facebook group, get to know other parents at events, or reach out to Parent & Family Relations at 386-226-7954 or dbparent@erau.edu to identify parents who have volunteered to mentor others so that you can connect. For parents of first-year students, the transition to college may include homesickness, struggles adjusting to academic workload, or difficulty making friends, which can be tough for parents who are far away and are used to intervening. Parents who have been there and done that will tell you the best advice is to listen and monitor the situation. For the most part, this is your Eagle’s first chance to navigate without you. Give them space and time to work through settling into their new home.

For parents of continuing students, academic issues and chosen area of study may alter your Eagle’s educational trajectory. If your Eagle is struggling academically, be sure they are seeking the support they need through advisement and tutoring. If your Eagle is stressed, it may help to offer reassurance and explore options that can relieve the pressures of the classroom. Other Eagles have overcome low GPAs, major changes, and even loss of scholarship. Their parents will tell you your Eagle can, too! For parents of graduating students, the process of landing a job or getting into grad school can be overwhelming. Feedback from other parents on how their Eagle made a career contact or identified post-graduate opportunities can help you to guide your Eagle to success. At every stage, parents share information about everything from recommending reliable, local mechanics to finding a storage unit for the summer and so much more! Do yourself a favor — choose your platform and connect with other ERAU parents today!

ERNIE:

Embry-Riddle Network for Information Exchange ERNIE is the student portal used to conduct business. This is where your Eagle will schedule courses, view financial aid, make payments, manage outstanding required tasks, set up and access ERAU email, access the Campus Solutions Student Homepage, and so much more.

FERPA For parents and family members, one of the key tasks to perform in ERNIE is the assignment of FERPA rights. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of, and limit access to, student educational records. This permission is granted through ERNIE by setting up auxiliary access, the system indication that your Eagle has granted

access to you. If your student doesn’t grant you access using the auxiliary access tool in ERNIE, University staff will be prohibited from communicating with you about your student. Students may revise their designations for disclosure at any time using Auxiliary Access in Campus Solutions. Read more about FERPA, and access instructions to set up auxiliary access, on the website at erau.edu/ferpa.

Add money to your Eagle’s EAGLEcard quickly and easily through ERNIE, or use guest access at guesteaglecard.erau.edu.

ERNIE CENTRAL & EAGLE CARD ERNIE Central is the central place for student services. From financial aid and paying your tuition to course registration and more, the staff are dedicated to providing the best in customer service at a centralized location so students can focus on school. You’ll find ERNIE Central in the Mori Hosseini Student Union, room 161. Or contact them directly at AskERNIE@erau.edu. ERNIE Central is also where students get their EAGLEcard. Your student’s EAGLEcard is primarily their student identification and serves as key card access, a library card, and provides access to meal plans and admission to campus events. EAGLEcard also serves as an optional campus debit card that can be used for dining, copy machines, vending machines, laundry, at the bookstore, and at select locations off campus. Many local businesses offer discounts and perks for card holders. EAGLEcards are issued to new students at orientation, but students can save time and avoid lines by requesting their card online before arrival.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Join the Club! Getting involved on campus is a great way for your Eagle to make friends, gain experience, network with industry, and have fun! Student organizations of every variety and for every interest are showcased each semester during the Activities Fair. There are organizations focused on spirituality and religion, sports and athletics, research, philanthropy and service, health and wellness, culture and ethnicity, professional and academic interests, as well as general interests. And, of course, options for aviation and aerospace interests like Women in Aviation, the rocket club, and the Flight Team.

Thirteen national fraternities and sororities offer the opportunity to become involved with Greek Life, and the Student Government Association (SGA) encourages students to get involved and gain leadership experience while being a voice for students on campus. Student reporters and photographers gain skills working for the Avion newspaper. The campus radio station, WIKD 102.5 FM, encourages students to learn how to DJ and create podcasts. Touch ‘N Go is the division that brings entertainment to campus including concerts and comedians.
