Welcome to LMU

Dear Parents and Families, Welcome to Loyola Marymount University! Steeped in great history, both our Jesuit and Marymount traditions set the foundation upon which we continue to build and grow. We hope that you see firsthand the care that we take to create an environment of academic, personal, spiritual and professional growth. At LMU, your student will be challenged to grow by their interactions in the classroom, co-curricular experiences and their fellow classmates. The 2021–22 academic year will be like no other before. LMU strives to provide a quality education and co-curricular opportunities for all students, while maintaining the dignity of the experiences each member of our community has faced. For many students and families, this year will be the very first time on our beautiful campus and we are excited to welcome you to your new home. LMU will continue to grow and adapt as the world continues to change in the aftermath of such an unprecedented time. Please stay informed of the university’s efforts on our LMU Together website.

6

We encourage you to empower your student to embrace the challenges they will undoubtedly face during their college years. The best way for you to help your student is to encourage them to use all the resources available to them at LMU, be involved on campus and use every opportunity to interact with faculty and staff to make their college experience all they imagine it to be. We realize this year will be filled with many changes for both you and your student, but you are not alone. We will be here to answer questions and provide the resources you need to support your son or daughter. The LMU Parent & Family Guide has important contact information that you will find helpful throughout your student’s time at LMU, and the Parent and Family Programs office is always here to help.

We look forward to a great first year! Lisha Maddox Director of Student Success

Academic Resource Center The Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides academic support for all degree-seeking LMU students. The cost of tuition covers all ARC services including course and language tutoring for gateway courses in subjects including, but not limited to, economics, mathematics, chemistry, psychology and modern languages as well as one-on-one writing consultations for all subjects. In addition, students who need assistance with general academic advising questions or how to best utilize academic planning tools can meet with an ARC University Advisor.

Furthermore, the ARC supports the campus through programs such as the LMU Common Book, in collaboration with the William H. Hannon Library, while also providing support for first-generation college students through the First To Go program. The Academic Resource Center 310.338.2847 arc@lmu.edu academics.lmu.edu/arc

First To Go The First To Go Program is a structured support system that provides personalized tools and resources for students who identify as “first generation” (i.e., neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree in the U.S.). The community offers students valuable opportunities for their academic, professional and personal growth and connects participants of all years and majors to a network of mentors drawn from LMU faculty, staff, alumni and peers who are or were first-generation college students themselves. Student Organizations As a student-centered university, it is fundamental that LMU has a wide variety of student organizations. With over 200 registered organizations, the variety is abundant, ranging from service and academic organizations to recreation and club sports. There are even opportunities to start new organizations! Student EXP

16

Student-centered learning, support and community is integral to the LMU experience. At LMU, we believe education happens in all areas of campus life, both inside and outside the classroom. When it comes to life outside the classroom, Student Affairs has created a framework to guide students’ experiences in meaningful ways — we call this the Student EXP (short for the Student Experience). The Student EXP is LMU’s dynamic cocurricular pathway to explore, grow and learn outside the classroom. At its core are Five Pillars, and each represents a habit or a value or an experience we think integral to developing an LMU Lion.

The Five Pillars of the LMU Student EXPerience:

Information on the Student EXP and much more can be found on the Virtual Student EXP website, an online hub featuring all the information you will need to find events and programs, service opportunities, recreation and fitness activities, support and more. Students can also use LEO to find event information, join clubs and organizations, receive news updates and take advantage of life as a Lion.

3. Become a Global Citizen Value the diversity of the human experience and commit to the practice of interculturalism to make meaningful contributions as citizens of the global community.

4. Practice Ignatian Values Make decisions congruent with their personal beliefs, values and faith through continuous reflection and discernment.

5. Live a Life of Purpose Lead a life where their greatest passion meets the world’s greatest need. In the belief that the glory of God is a human being fully alive and grounded in both Jesuit and Marymount traditions, the Division of Student Affairs supports the Loyola Marymount University mission through programs and services designed to advance student learning.

ASLMU The Associated Students of Loyola Marymount University (ASLMU), is our undergraduate student government. We are a dedicated team that acts as an advocate for student concerns, a liaison between students and the administration, and the major programmer for LMU’s coolest events. First-year students can get involved as early as the first few weeks through ASLMU as a committee member, a staff member, or a volunteer. Encourage your student to visit the ASLMU office on the first floor of the Malone Building.

With 20 registered chapters to choose from, your student can find the right fit. First-year students are eligible to join as early as spring semester if they have at least a 2.5 GPA and 12 hours of college credit. First-time spring first-year and spring transfer students are also eligible to join.

Ignatian Leadership Institute The Ignatian Leadership Institute (ILI) offers students the ability to explore leadership through different perspectives, including individual, group, community and Ignatian values. Three different one-unit classes are offered during both the fall and spring semesters. The ILI Leadership Seminars are listed in PROWL as EDLA 489, EDLA 490, EDLA 491. The courses are small seminar style experiences, can be taken in any order and are open for all LMU undergraduate students. As students in the ILI explore the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, along with other leadership concepts such as servant leadership, Ignatian leadership and a wide range of current social topics and issues, they grow in their ability to lead and make positive change in the world. Visit PROWL to register for a Leadership Seminar or email leadership@lmu.edu for more information. SECTION 7: HEALTH AND SAFETY

Student Health Student Health Services (SHS) is a quality, full-service medical facility available to all LMU students enrolled in six or more units. The staff includes a board-certified internist, certified nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical assistants, an X-ray technologist and administrative staff. SHS offers a wide range of services to meet students’ health care needs including treatment for illnesses and injuries, dermatological care, preventive care, prescriptions, vaccinations, lab work, X-rays and allergy injections. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. with extended hours on Wednesdays until 7 p.m. during the academic year.

Accreditation SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and is staffed by highly trained and experienced health care providers.

Eligibility All students enrolled in six or more semester hours are eligible to receive health services. Students are seen by appointment only unless it is an emergent health problem. Appointments can be

32

made by accessing the MyHealth Portal, calling 310.338.2881, or stopping in to schedule an appointment at the front desk. In order to avoid scheduling errors or conflicts, as well as for privacy reasons, we require students to make their own appointments.

Health-Related Charges There is no charge for undergraduate students to be seen by a member of SHS staff; however, graduate students are charged a $50.00 access fee per semester if they visit SHS. Additional charges may be incurred by all students if they require medications, procedures, x-rays and/or lab work during the course of their visit. These charges are posted directly to the student account. SHS does not bill insurance carriers directly and, therefore, we do not require proof of health insurance at the time of a student’s visit; however we can provide a detailed billing statement which may be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement of health charges.

Students can go to our website for more information on routes and how to reserve a ride, book a reservation for the LAX shuttle, and many other transportation options. Please visit our website for hours, schedule and an up-to-date list of destinations.
