“ROCKET” READERS

This library time features fun science experiments, awesome hands-on activities, crafts, stories, and a snack for early elementary students.

This unstructured library time features a play area and music for our youngest library patrons and their caregivers. Caregiver attendance is required.

Reading is vital for children to succeed in school and in life, but many of them struggle with reading. What better listener than a friendly, non-judgmental dog from the Heart of Texas Therapy Dogs program? These programs are growing in libraries across the country and researchers report a rise in reading levels among participating children. Independent readers (grades 1-5) can bring a favorite book from home or choose one from the library, and read it to a furry friend while here at the library! “Rocket” Readers is conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

MUSIC IN MOVIES: HEDWIG’S THEME IN HARRY POTTER

EXPLORE HORIZONS STORY WORKSHOP: HARRY POTTER

Perhaps the most recognizable melody of the Harry Potter franchise, “Hedwig’s Theme,” saturates the soundtrack of the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This lecture briefly traces the musical history of the hero’s theme from Romanticism through sound film and describes how these musical representations of character influenced “Hedwig’s Theme.” Furthermore, the program examines the ways in which the theme’s absence and eventual return shape our understanding of Harry’s journey from young wizard to hero. There will be time at the end of the presentation for questions. Refreshments will be provided.
