This fall, Columbia Art Center will be offering new classes in T’ai Chi Chih, narrative painting, pencil rendering, portrait drawing, jewelry, hand-sewing, bronze metal, and ceramics surface decoration. Columbia Art Center’s fall roster of exhibitions kicks-off with a show featuring contemporary Latin American art!

MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings.

OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 24 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile.

From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. NOTE: All fall 2012 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge to practice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per session, e.g. 10 week session = 25 pieces, 8 week session = 20 pieces, etc. Students who wish to produce an excess of 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch.

Individual tools and clay are not included. Please no production work.

Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something on the potter’s wheel? Well, join us and see what it’s all about. In this one-day three-hour workshop participants will cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon.

Students will decorate finished pieces using commercial under-glaze and slips. For age18 and up. Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for the drying and firing of finished work.

MINI-WORKSHOP SERIES - SURFACE DECORATION with Christina McCleary NEW! Bring new depth to your work with velvet underglazes, Mason stains and more. Workshop will show students how to mix and use these colorful decorating materials and how to integrate them into thrown and hand-built forms. Achieve layered and unique surfaces like you’ve never dared before. Elements of design and principles of composition will be discussed. Bring your studio image journals that include examples of work you like and one wet, leather-hard, and bisqued piece on which to practice.

EMPTY BOWLS Fundraising Event October 6 • 3-5:30pm • Tickets: $20 Columbia Art Center will host Empty Bowls, a charity fundraiser, on October 6, 2012 to raise money for the fight against hunger. This exciting event will include live music, studio demonstrations, a silent art auction, raffles, and light fare. The highlight of the afternoon will be the display of over 300 beautiful one-of-a-kind handmade bowls created by Columbia Art Center students and faculty. Guests will be able to handpick the bowl of their choice. All proceeds will be donated to FISH of Howard County, Inc. Come join us for a great night to support a great cause. Tickets will go on sale August 25, 2012.

MINI-WORKSHOP SERIES - NESTLING TOGETHER with Megan Trail (for adult and child ages 6-11yrs) NEW! Looking for hands-on family fun! This workshop is for you and your little one. Learn to construct ceramic nesting boxes from creative slab building techniques. Projects will then be stamped, carved and painted with colorful underglazes.

INTRODUCTION TO THE WHEEL: LEARNING TO LOVE CLAY For total beginner students and those with some clay experience. Learn the basics of working on the potter’s wheel. Wedge and center clay and learn how to turn basic thrown forms into beautiful vases, cups and bowls.

Simple glazing and decorating techniques are also introduced. (Supplies are available to purchase on the first day of class.)

Columbia Art Center sets the stage and you create the art! Columbia Art Center’s party coordinator will help you create the perfect day for your child to include everything from invitations, party decorations and supplies, and a variety of art projects and techniques for you to choose from and the final celebration with pizza and punch. We’ll make sure you leave with art projects that make you want to create more.

Cost starts at $225 and includes up to 10 children, instructor and assistant fee, set up, art supplies, pizza and beverages. The two hour parties include 90 minutes of artinstructed projects and 30 minutes for food and celebration. An additional charge of $10 for each additional child (max of 20 kids).

BEYOND THE BASICS IN WHEEL-THROWING with Joe Vitek This class will push you beyond your current proficiency level and comfort zone. Creating a ceramic piece requires successful completion of many different and complicated techniques which become easier when broken down into individual steps. Practice and hone these skills and as you do so, gain greater confidence to move on to more challenging projects. With the instructor, you will refine your techniques and explore your own voice in clay.

Learn how to glaze and fire your works through a variety of firing techniques including reduction, pit and sager. Handbuilding and wheel demonstrations will be given each class. Gain both ability and personal style in clay.

Demonstrations of functional, figurative, and abstract forms will guide you in developing individual works of art. You are welcome to complete class assignments or work on your own personal projects. Assignments may include plates, goblets, figurines, compound extruded forms, birdhouses, beads, tiles, and much more. Explore uses of hand-made stamps, found objects, and alternative firing techniques to make and finish your work.

OPEN STUDIO CERAMICS Designed as independent studio time for advanced ceramic students to pursue personal projects during day and weekend hours when classes are not in session. There is no instruction. Students must be experienced with the studio equipment, clay and glaze use and clean-up processes. Please no production work.

COLLAGE PAPER COLLAGE: CUVISM (COGNITIVE UNCONSCIOUS VISUALITY) with George Sakkal George believes that art is the visual creative manifestation of human experience. He will introduce you to a methodology that will help access the wealth of your life’s experience stored in the memories of your unconscious mind to create unimaginable art. Using a unique paper collage methodology involving the retina of the eye acting in conjunction with cognitive intuition, you will be guided by George’s 50 years of collage experience to explore, discover, and achieve artistic creativity. No formal art training is necessary.

CRAFTS ITALIAN DECOUPAGE with Susan Kieffer How would you like to turn that drab old piece of furniture into something spectacular? Well, with “Italian decoupage” it’s truly possible! Italian decoupage is not the old art of cutting something out of a magazine and gluing it down to a surface. This method starts with paper napkins and turns into something really special. The finished surface of your project will resemble a hand painted design. This technique can be done on any smooth wooden surface. You select and bring an easily transportable piece of wood (end table, stool, chair, or tray), and have fun transforming it into something that will make you proud.

INTRODUCTION TO CHINA PAINTING with Sarah Snowden Paint a family heirloom! Learn the basic techniques of the fine art of China Painting (also referred to as Porcelain Art) through demonstration and practice. You will learn how to use brushes to apply the on-glaze paint while working on your porcelain. Materials fee ($10 paid to the teacher at the first class) will cover all supplies: paints, mediums, use of instructor’s brushes, porcelain, firings, and other supplies. Pieces will be fired at the instructor’s studio and will then be available for pick-up at Columbia Art Center within 4 days after the workshop. Class is limited to 6 participants.

INTRODUCTION TO NEEDLE FELTING with Laura Vernon Russell Needle felting is a dry felting technique that ‘fuses’ wool fibers to a base layer of wool or wool felt. Using specially designed needles, students in this introductory workshop will learn the rudiments of two-dimensional needle felting to create a picture made with wool. Basic materials, sources, and finishing will be covered in the three-hour workshop. Supplies will be provided.

DIGITAL ARTS AND PHOTOGRAPHY TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS WITH YOUR SMART DEVICES with Robin Abello NEW! In this morning workshop, have fun learning how to take photographs with your smart phone or tablet and transfer them to your computer. You will also learn how to transfer images from your camera to your smart phone and tablet. Apps for sharing photos (including sharing on Facebook and Twitter) will be covered as well as apps for editing photos.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with Dennis Gilbert Learn the basic concepts of photography through the use of a digital camera and other digital media. Processing, adjusting, printing, and transmission of digital images will be covered. Using the industry standard, Adobe Photoshop® Elements, digital workflow and image adjustments will be presented. Access to a digital camera is desirable; however, those using a film camera will be able to scan prints, or have their film developed and placed on a CD by a commercial film processor of their choice.

TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS WITH YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA with Dennis Gilbert and Jones Taylor, Sr. Do you ever wish your photographs could be more creative and satisfying? Then, this is the workshop for you! Through photo assignments, discussion and demonstration, explore camera operation in both manual and automatic mode and examine the elements of composition and what makes a good photograph. Learn manipulation of shutter speeds, aperture, and ‘film’ speeds for correct exposure.

IMAGE EDITING USING PHOTOSHOP with Robin Abello Learn how to edit your images using Adobe Photoshop® Elements. This workshop is an ideal follow-up to the workshop How To Use Your Digital Camera. Topics that will be covered include tools, filters, text, layers, cropping, cloning, selections, brushes and more!

NEW! This two-day workshop is designed for students with some watercolor experience. Learn a unique method of producing texture on paper using the “rivulet method” devised by Susan Murphy.

You will then create an image with lifting-off and glazing techniques. The workshop will focus on painting the figure of a statue, using your own reference material or that provided by the instructor. BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE ENCAUSTICS with Laura Vernon Russell This encaustics class will teach the use of beeswax, resin and pigments to apply melted beeswax to boards in a safe environment. You will learn how to make encaustic medium and paint, learn to fuse layers, create texture, and use collage and image transfer techniques. FIBER INTRODUCTION TO HAND-SEWING with Mattie Hayes NEW! This class is designed for beginning students and those who are in need of a refresher course in handsewing skills. Twelve functional hand-sewing stitches will be introduced in this 4-week class. The final project will introduce you to quilting. As you learn how to sew, discussions will include all forms of the sewing arts and their techniques. Upon completion of the class, you will have a better outlook on sewing and be able to execute functional hand-stitching for daily life. Bring a three-ring binder and pen to the first class. CREATE METAL JEWELRY WITH BRONZE CLAY with Nancy Pollack This 3-day workshop is for beginning and continuing metal clay students. Bronze clay is worked like ceramic clay, but produces solid bronze after firing. Using bronze clay, create several pieces of solid bronze jewelry. Sample projects will be provided. The instructor will kiln fire your work and return it as solid bronze jewelry. Learn how to add a professional touch to your jewelry with finish and refining techniques and patina. Note: Columbia Art Center is now offering bronze clay jewelry classes because of the very high price of silver clay. For beginners, the workshop offers a great introduction to metal clay.

Students who have taken silver clay classes are encouraged to take the class; bronze clay and kiln firing will allow you to make larger pieces than are possible with silver clay. In this workshop, learn to use crimp beads, crimp covers, stringing wire, silver tubes and teardrop beads to create your own version of this popular bracelet. RIGHT ANGLE WEAVE WITH STRINGING WIRE with Donna Weeks NEW! No needles or thread required to complete this right angle weave bracelet. This is a wonderful technique to learn because every time you change the beads, you change the look of the project. When you use bugle beads, your bracelet can become squared-switch to round beads and you get a softer look. You’ll be using silver spacer beads and bugle beads for your creation. If you haven’t worked with crimp beads before, there will be a quick teaching session on their use as well. You will be using very thin silver wire (28 gauge), lots of pearls and beads in a variety of colors and sizes, and a crochet hook. Once you string the beads on and crochet, you’ll twist the wire into your correct size, add a clasp and you’re finished. This bracelet is designed to fit all wrist sizes because you can twist it to make it smaller or untwist it to enlarge. Ideal for gift-giving! HOW TO TOUCH FALL, A HAIKU WORKSHOP with Tim Singleton How can something so small and seemingly simple take a lifetime to master? It is called the poem of a single breath, capturing a momentary observation in a handful of words. But, for all its brevity, it’s been practiced for centuries, and, at its best, reverberates forever. Explore the world’s most popular poetic form, the haiku, its history, conceptions and misconceptions. In this workshop designed for all ages, start your own practice of the form, embarking on what many call a way of life, and join in the worldwide craze that is English language haiku.

NURTURING THE CREATIVE IMPROMPTU with Denee Barr and Kay Weeks NEW! This two-hour workshop is part presentation and part audience participation. It gently underscores the idea that poetic language and music can come from the heart — be spontaneous, fun, and joyful — when the brain editor doesn’t intercede to make erasures, edits, start-overs. Kay Weeks, who writes poetry and essays, and Denee Barr, who sings all types of music from serious to jazz scat, will join forces to provide examples of how this works, using their examples/experience as models. For the poetry aspect, the short form of the Senryu will be illustrated and you will have the opportunity to write Senryu. The two facilitators will present a few of these QUICK POPS (poetry and music) to inspire your creative side. There doesn’t have to be a finished product at this workshop because you are here to have fun, perhaps try to stump the presenters — or not — and try your hand at writing.

DRAWING FOR YOUTH (for ages 9-12) with Carol Zika Children love to draw and they do so freely and with great joy. Pre-adolescents reach a point where they want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. To do this, they must learn to “see” with an artist’s eye. This course introduces methods to help reach their goals in a fun and productive way! Students will be introduced to graphite, charcoal, pastel and colored pencils. Tuition includes supplies.

COSTUME DESIGN FOR THEATER (for ages 11-17) with Chris Kinslow Like dressing up? Join professional theater artist Chris Kinslow for a four-week introduction to the art of costume design. Participants will explore various artistic color palettes, periods, motifs, and styles of costume design culminating in the construction of an original costume. Course will include class discussion, pencil and watercolor drawings, and a trip to the local thrift store for materials and mixed media items to use.

CORDED BRACELETS (for ages 12-17) with Donna Weeks NEW! In this one day workshop, enjoy working with satin or twisted cord as the base for your project. You choose the beads you like, and stitch them between the cords to form a ladder design. Add a button at the end for a clasp, and you’re finished. This workshop is easy and fun, but it does require the use of needle and thread.

At the workshop, you will be required to pay a $5 materials fee which includes everything needed to create this fun project and use of tools.

(for ages 12-17) with Joe Vitek For both total beginners and those with clay experience!

This class is designed for students who wish to learn the fundamental skills involved with making pottery on the wheel. All the basics from clay preparation, throwing techniques, and glazing will be taught, as well as opportunities for some hand-building. You can expect to learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls, and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. (Clay, use of tools, glazing and firing are included in tuition.)

Then, this is the workshop for you! Using live drawing demonstrations discover how to draw and design characters in both western and Japanese “manga’ comic book styles. Explore techniques for creating engaging characters, costumes and expressions. This workshop includes discussion, demonstration of basic story creation, and page layout.

This life skill class is a wonderful way to continue your path of fashion design. In the class, you’ll learn the following stitches: Running, Back Stitch, Whipped Running, Blanket, Stem, Chain, Cross, Fly, Satin, Vertical Hem, Slip and Whip. HOMESCHOOLING PROGRAMS ART THROUGH THE CURRICULUM: SURVEY (for ages 6-10) Learn about general subjects through a visual lens and hands-on exploration. This art integration class will allow students to develop artistic skills and techniques while learning age-appropriate basics in subjects such as language, mathematics, history, science and health. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, please call the Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 or check Columbia Art Center’s website and Facebook page.

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption.
