WHERE? College PreView at Columbus College of Art & Design offers rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors an exhilarating three-week college experience in art and design. Live in our residence halls, take classes with our faculty, meet professional artists, exhibit your work, explore Columbus and its art scene, and consider a trip to New York City. If you’ll be entering grade 10,* 11, or 12 next fall and are considering a future in the visual arts, this is the program that will make your decision clear — and earn you three college credits (with an additional credit if you complete the New York Art Excursion). * Please note that students entering grade 10 can opt to participate in either Discovery Club or College PreView.

ART CONTEXTS: GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS How does art change when it is presented in different settings? Visits to Columbus’ diverse galleries and museums will allow you to dig into the questions raised by art’s varying contexts.
DIGITAL BRANDING Computers are now a creative essential for designers and fine artists. Explore a range of digital tools that you are likely to encounter in college-level creative courses. Use creative resources on the Internet, online communication options, and other up-to-the-minute tools and techniques to create your own website, personal brand and self-promotion toolkit.

FOUNDATIONS OF ART Get a head start on college-level courses and build a strong base for your creative vision. This course teaches basic principles of design and color, fundamental technical skills, and introductory art and design history.
PORTFOLIO PREPARATION Learn how to put together a top-notch portfolio. CCAD admissions representatives will review your work, make recommendations, and outline scholarship application procedures.
FIGURE DRAWING Drawing from the nude model is a traditional and integral part of higher education in the visual arts. Observing the human body, while studying its muscular and skeletal anatomy, helps you understand the dynamics of human movement and form.

ADVERTISING AND GRAPHIC DESIGN Use problem solving and critical thinking to develop, render, and present a promotional campaign, including designs for a logo, a poster, an ad, direct mail, and packaging.
ANIMATION Learn to conceptualize ideas, develop storyboards, and explore characterization in a time-based environment and incorporate a style consistent with your individual interests and strengths. Gain an understanding of the role of animation in the communications marketplace as well as the fine arts arena.
CINEMATIC ARTS Using easily accessible technology, this course covers basic scripting, storyboarding, camera operation, lighting, and editing. You’ll learn the basics of cinema with a variety of tools to write, capture and edit your own movie.
DRAWING Using pencil, charcoal, and other media, build skills in perspective, proportion, value control, and other drawing basics through exploration of still lifes, landscapes, and interiors.
FASHION FUNDAMENTALS Explore fibers and fabric, dyeing, garment construction, fashion illustration, and merchandising, all in the context of current fashion industry trends.

ILLUSTRATION From initial thumbnail sketches to final art, create illustrations based on design, stylization, and humor, using both traditional drawing and digital media tools.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Learn industrial design research practices, and use high tech equipment such as laser cutters, 3-D printers, and CNC routers to create a real consumer product.
INTERIOR DESIGN Explore interior design career options with professionals, site visits and visiting artists. Create an interior of your own by learning how to take a concept and represent it with inspiration boards, drawing, sketching, materials, and a final presentation board.
PAINTING Learn how to use color mixing, washes, brush strokes, and proper paint handling to create paintings that incorporate good composition, sound color theory, and strong underlying drawing.
PHOTOGRAPHY Investigate photographic equipment, processes, finishing, and mounting, while at the same time discussing aesthetic principles of technique, light, and composition. You must bring your own camera.

PROGRAM COSTS & DEADLINES The program fee of $2,950 covers three college credits, three weeks of on-campus residence, all meals, all supplies, and all costs related to local transportation, admission, and food for off-campus activities. To apply, go to ccad.slideroom.com. All applicants will be considered for a limited number of scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,500. In addition to the application, you will be required to submit a portfolio of three examples of your work, a letter of recommendation, and a personal statement.
ORIENTATION College PreView begins with move-in and a mandatory orientation. If you cannot arrange to arrive on July 7 in time for orientation, please plan to arrive the day before and let program staff know of your plans. Housing will be made available if you must arrive on Saturday.
GETTING TO CAMPUS Columbus is served by Port Columbus International Airport (airport code CMH). Airport pick-up and drop-off services are provided by CCAD’s security staff. If you plan to keep a car on campus during the program, you’ll be required to obtain a parking pass and park in designated lots. (More info about this is included in the information packet sent after you register.)

HOUSING All College PreView students live on campus in CCAD’s residence halls. For descriptions, please see the CCAD Campus section of www.ccad.edu. On-campus residency is required.
FACULTY All courses are taught by CCAD’s faculty. They are supported by current CCAD students — giving you a great opportunity to find out more about art school from a student’s point of view. Professional artists and designers give lectures and facilitate special sessions and workshops.
COLLEGE CREDIT College PreView students who attend all classes, successfully complete all assignments, and earn a C or better are granted three college credits.
SAFETY AND SECURITY Residence hall advisors and campus security staff are available at all times to ensure campus safety and security. You in turn are expected to follow all campus housing regulations and the CCAD student code of conduct. Specific rules and regulations will be included with the information packet mailed to you after registration.
LEISURE TIME AND EVENING EVENTS Some planned group activities are led by CCAD faculty, others by Residence Life staff. All are assisted by a team of current CCAD students. OPTIONAL TRAVEL PROGRAM NEW YORK ART EXCURSION July 28 to Aug. 3: To enhance the College PreView experience, CCAD will lead a five-day trip to New York at the conclusion of the on-campus session to tour the city’s museums and galleries and to meet with successful CCAD alumni who are working in the New York area. Participants can earn additional credit for the experience, while expanding their understanding of art and design majors and careers in one of the world’s leading cities. This custom tour elective is designed to provide participants with an understanding of art and design’s social and cultural importance as well as career prospects. The program will be led by Michael Goodson, CCAD director of exhibitions, who formerly served in that role at the James Cohan Gallery in New York. Students who successfully complete the program are granted one additional college credit for the New York Art Excursion.
NEW YORK ART EXCURSION COSTS AND DEADLINES The $1,750 program fee and tuition for the New York Art Excursion is due upon registration. The fee includes round-trip airfare from Columbus to New York and accommodations. Students will receive a per diem for meals. The price is based on double occupancy.
