1 Lisa Lee
A letter from the Head of School, Liza Lee During my annual Convocation address this year (my final Convocation), I couldn’t resist imparting some brief advice to carry the school into the the new school year. I thought it appropriate to share those thoughts here with our wider CSG family, as well. “To everything there is a season, and the start of school is certainly a season of ceremonies and talks. The first piece of advice I have is based on the book that the faculty and staff all read this summer–Lean In, by Cheryl Sandberg. Her book concerns the ways in which women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers, and she urges women to lean in–to assert themselves–in their workplaces. But I think when she talks about leaning in, she is really speaking about engaging in life fully. I urge you to lean into life at CSG. To not pull back. To say yes to being a member of our community; say yes to making new friends; say yes to new experiences; say yes to risk-taking; Christina Henry, an Ohio poet and writer who is new to me, says in one of her poems: To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental; To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self; To love is to risk not being loved in return; But risk must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. My next piece of advice follows from this. If you are to engage fully in life, if you lean in, if you risk yourself, you will never become indifferent. My second piece of advice is never to become indifferent and always to remember that your life matters. My third piece of advice, which I give every year, is to remember to be kind. You Unicorns are known for your marvelous support of each other. You are at a time in your lives when every day you have the opportunity to give each other strength, comfort, and affirmation. Many new students are joining you–reach out to them as you have reached out to each other over the years, and continue to make your class a welcoming place. Enjoy the shelter of each other! So that’s my advice, but since this is my last convocation, I have to express my great pleasure in knowing you. I told the faculty of my admiration and affection for them at my opening meeting with them, but now I want to speak of the school’s great fortune in having each of you within its halls. CSG students are known for bringing humanity and dignity to all their endeavors. Your sensibility and your loyalty to the school are remarkable, and your warmth and vitality are a blessing. Your collective power is astonishing: your publications, your concerts, your art, your athletic games, your community service projects are all distinguished by your teamwork and cooperation, not to mention your exuberance and creativity. You are known in Columbus for the poise and confidence with which you conduct yourselves on every public occasion. You are my last students and I will always, always cherish you.” To my readers, know that I will always cherish you as well. Over the summer I had time to reflect on the joy the CSG community has brought me, and on the excitement and passion that permeate these halls and playing fields. It’s a wonderful school, and I have treasured my experience here. Thank you for the privilege of being a part of this incredible community. Affectionately,
Liza

Head of School search update
Grace Notes at Carnegie Hall
It has been a busy summer for those involved in the CSG Head of School search process. The parent and alumnae advisory committees were formed and have reviewed prospective questions for the candidates. Meanwhile, the CSG Search Committee met to further refine the selection criteria and finalize the format and scheduling for the interviews of semi-finalist and finalist candidates. Our search consultants at Brigham Hill spent their summer traveling to meet with prospective candidates and worked with the CSG Search Committee to select the candidates for the initial semi-finalists interviews which the Search Committee began in August. As a result, the search process for a new Head of School continues to be on target and to move forward expeditiously. Please visit the CSG website and keep an eye on future CSG emails for more information on our progress.
The Grace Notes headed to New York City on April 5 to participate in a music festival that culminated with a concert at Carnegie Hall. Choirs hoping to participate in this honors program submitted audition files of live performances from the past two years in order to be considered for this prestigious event.

Chinese language teacher Ping Wu was chosen by the University of Massachusetts to participate in the U.S. Department of Education’s Fulbright-Hays Chinese Language and Culture Enrichment Program. Ms. Wu was part of a 15-member group of teachers who spent six weeks this summer studying Chinese culture and language in Shaanxi, China. She was also recently honored with a Chinese Language Teaching Fellowship by the Asia Society, and was appointed by the Ohio Department of Education to serve on its World Language Model Curriculum Development Committee.
Caring and determined – nothing stops a CSG girl Sarah Naguib ’13 eloquently presented at the 2012 TEDxYouth Conference in Columbus about the Laptops for Egypt program she started as a junior. By the time she graduated a year later, her charity had raised $32,000—enough to send 100 laptops to disadvantaged schools in Egypt. Along the way, many told Naguib that she was too young to build an effective organization. In true CSG fashion, Naguib, of course, persevered. This fall she began her freshman year at Kenyon College.

1:1 laptop program roll out in Middle School CSG’s Middle School is breaking new ground with a pilot 1:1 tablet program that launched last spring. Current Form VII students are now using the new Microsoft Surface Pro, outfitted with Windows 8 Professional. Form VI students will be introduced to the Surface on a regular basis within their classrooms. Form VIII students will continue using Lenovo laptops to help build skills and deepen their expertise on software that they will be using in the Upper School. The opportunity to launch a 1:1 tablet program in the Middle School is compelling academically and will afford students and teachers a broader and more flexible curriculum in accordance with best practices of teaching and learning.

Building faculty expertise Jillian (Davis) Smith, Program for Young Children studio art instructor, traveled to Reggio Emilia, Italy, this past spring to study and observe educators and schools in the area that inspired and carryon the Reggio Emilia approach to learning. Ms. Smith was awarded this opportunity due to the Faculty Staff Travel Grant Award that was established in 1981 by The Fergus Family Fund. Ms. Smith toured preschools and infant/toddler centers with over 450 other educators. She was immersed in the observations as she noted all aspects of the school environments from the documentation on the wall, to the furniture, to the way items were specifically placed in the classrooms. Additionally, she visited the REMIDA center, which is “a cultural project bearing an ecological, ethical, aesthetic, educational and economic message that promotes creative re-use of discarded materials.” www.columbusschoolforgirls.org

Congratulations, Class of 2013 CSG Commencement, June 6, 2013
Damp weather and gray skies did not subdue high spirits as CSG’s 60-member class of 2013 received their diplomas. Smiles, and a few tears, were evident as each girl proudly carried her bouquet of red roses toward the podium on the Mansion veranda. It was the joyful culmination of a tradition-filled week including the senior party, Mother/Daughter Brunch, commencement rehearsal (and more commencement rehearsals), the Sophomore/Senior serenade, and an emotional Senior Night. Class of 2013, welcome to the ranks of CSG alumnae!
Class of 2013
Columbus School for Girls • Forte et Gratum • Autumn 2013
Yvette McGee Brown gave an especially inspiring commencement address, encouraging the graduates to follow their dreams.
Excerpts from Student Council President Jasneet Singh’s Commencement address: “I can remember my first day of CSG in the Eighth Form very distinctly. For example, I recall thinking ‘Wow, for being so small, these girls can eat a lot,’ and I wondered if I missed the memo to wear a huge bow in my hair for pictures.” “… looking back, I see that sense of gratitude as part of what makes CSG girls so poised and mature. We as students appreciate the academic and life lessons that this community continues to teach us. ” “On behalf of the Class of 2013, I would like to say thank you to everyone who pushed us, inspired us, and supported us during our journey here at CSG. It is my hope for this graduating class, and everyone in the audience, to continue to spread this message of gratitude outside of the walls of this school.” “The saying goes; it takes a village to raise a child. Well, here at CSG, it took this loving community of faculty, staff members, administrators, parents, and even our peers to raise the strong, independent women you see sitting next to me today. Congratulations to the Class of 2013, we truly are Out Of This World.”

Giving the Commencement address was Yvette McGee Brown, currently a partner with the international law firm Jones Day. Brown has a long and distinguished judicial and public service career, including serving on the Ohio Supreme Court and Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. She was the founding president of the Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Brown graduated from Ohio University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and earned her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1985.
Pipe dreams can come true Thanks to the vision of CSG girls, the Adena Pipe has become Ohio’s official state artifact It was a day that more than 100 CSG Form VII, V, and IV girls will never forget. Excitement undeniably filled the air at the Ohio Statehouse as the girls packed the Ohio Senate Finance Hearing Room on Thursday, May 16, 2013, to witness Ohio Governor John R. Kasich sign the Adena Pipe bill into law. A law that is now in place thanks to the passion, patience, and persistence of CSG girls. “The lesson here is, your classmates were persistent in getting this done,” Governor Kasich said to the girls. “And then you came here, and you so impressed the legislature that there was no way they could resist making this the state artifact,” Governor Kasich added. The girls’ and the pipe bill’s journey began more than three years ago. While studying Ohio’s prehistory and government in fourth grade, the Class of 2018 took on the project to create an official state artifact. The girls felt that having a state artifact would encourage others to learn more about Ohio’s history, especially the prehistory of our state, and give a voice to the indigenous people of Ohio who no longer can speak for themselves. They Columbus School for Girls • Forte et Gratum • Autumn 2013
selected the Adena Pipe, a one-of-a-kind, 2,000-year-old effigy pipe depicting a full human body with decorative clothing. The object was found on the property of Thomas Worthington, Ohio’s sixth governor and the man considered the “father of Ohio’s statehood.” With steely determination, as 2013 unfolded, students who had worked on the project for years in all three classes wrote letters to representatives, senators, and Governor Kasich, testified before Senate and House committees, and watched legislative votes on this bill. During the formal signing, Form IV teachers Tracy Kessler and Charlotte Stiverson addressed the crowded room. “You’ve learned about persistence, and that it does take a lot of hard work to get things done. But when you believe in something, that’s a really special thing,” said Tracy Kessler. Senator Kevin Bacon remarked that in Capital Square, the girls from CSG became known as the rock stars because they came so well prepared. “Everyone loved for them to come to committee; everyone loved for you to testify,” he said. “[You’ve] left an incredible mark on Ohio history.”
Actors’ Theatre of Columbus continues collaboration with CSG “For a high school student, working with professional actors and directors is a unique opportunity usually found only at the college level.”
— Janetta Davis CSG theater program coordinator/director
The relationship between Actors’ Theatre and CSG’s Upper School Theatre department continued to flourish. In the recent past CSG graduates Piper Rassmussen ’12, Shelby Williams ’12, and Suzy Kohane ’08 participated in shows at Actors’. Over the summer, five CSG students played key roles in offerings of Actors’ Theatre. In the late spring, Rachel Canowitz ’13 was quite lively while playing Luce in The Comedy of Errors, which was produced at the Columbus Commons in May. Canowitz also served as an assistant stage manager for All the Great Books, Abridged, along with Alexa Raasch, ’15, Helen Abraha ’14, and Victoria Melillo ’14, who worked as technical interns with Actors’ through July 2013. Brynna Newkirk ’13 was the stage manager for Twelfth Night, which was produced at Schiller Park in late June. Newkirk has worked for Actors’ as an assistant stage manager in previous years. In mid-September, Grace Bolander ’14 performed the title role of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet! Bolander had the unique opportunity to work alongside her teacher, Ms. Janetta Davis, who played her mother, Lady Capulet.

Collaboration
CSG theater students are enjoying an extremely rare opportunity — performing alongside professional actors. This past April, Actors’ Theatre of Columbus adults and CSG students worked side by side on a co-production of Arthur Miller’s powerful dramatization of the Salem witch trials, The Crucible. The work was co-directed by John Kuhn, artistic director of Actors’ Theatre, and Janetta Davis, CSG’s theater program coordinator/director. Two years ago the two groups co-produced Trojan Women at CSG with great success. This professional relationship is unique between high schools and professional theaters in that the students take ownership, perform roles, and are participating as respected colleagues with the adults.

Sustainability the core focus of the new
playground The Program for Young Children welcomed a new playground this spring. During the project, considerable emphasis was given to reusing materials from the deconstruction of the old space to create the new. PYC playground highlights: • Pieces of the old sidewalk were re-purposed as a decorative and functional retaining wall. •
A large, mature ash tree that had become infected and needed to be cut down was reused as a “fallen log” in our sand field and smaller branches were cut up to create tree cookies, which were then used as pavers in part of the pathway.
•
Timbers that lined some of the old spaces were used in pathways.
•
Other materials removed during the deconstruction phase were used as a filler base for a hill on the playground, so the project produced very little trash.
•
The PYC’s sustainable garden began its third year in August 2013. The garden is used for classroom activities, snacks, and even used by our dining staff to make lunch.
Columbus School for Girls • Forte et Gratum • Autumn 2013
•
Leftover food from snack and lunch is composted.
•
A rain barrel has been piped into the rain spout to collect water for the garden.
•
A second (larger) rain harvesting system was added that can be used for watering plants and pumped into another barrel fitted with a water pump for the children to explore water play. This entire space is set up with earth and rocks that can be manipulated by the children to explore the science of moving water. The excess water from this space feeds into two trenches to water the willow, which the PYC staff members are hoping to grow into a willow tunnel.
•
An additional rain spout was piped into a rain garden.
•
The entire space is filled with natural materials for the children to reuse, re-imagine, and use in countless ways.
May Program
10
Established in 1967 as a part of the curriculum and required for graduation “Senior May Program provides students with off-campus experiences intended to help them transition from the high school classroom to college and, ultimately, the professional work world.” Seniors this past May stepped out of the comforts of the classroom and explored a variety of non-profit organizations, businesses, medical and educational institutions, and even opportunities in other countries. Katelyn Lennon ’13 was inspired by personal tragedy to work with Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids (NC4K) located in Reynoldsburg. NC4K is a non-profit organization that provides financial and emotional support to families coping with children suffering from pediatric cancer. Katelyn’s father, Stephen R. Lennon, died during her junior year after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Katelyn saw the opportunity to work with NC4K as an entrée to developing her own non-profit for pancreatic cancer awareness someday.
“My May program has definitely made me so grateful for everything I have from education at CSG to something as simple as my health. My May program has also given me some of the skills that I am going to need to start my own non-profit one day!” Katelyn Lennon ’13
Victoria Williams ’13 interned with Hahn, Loeser, and Parks Law Firm where she worked on patent and trademark law in the Intellectual Property Department. Williams has been interested in law since Form IV, and during her junior year she decided that patent law was the specific branch she was interested in pursuing. Her time at the law firm was so fruitful she was offered a paid internship that she plans to take advantage of in the summer of 2014, following her first year at Kenyon College. Other students decided May program was the time to travel far away from the I-270 loop. Three seniors, Carly Green, Elena Ruggieri-Smithies, and Sarah Rogers traveled with Spanish teacher Bill Miller and Middle School counselor Dr. Chris Smithies to Guatemala. This trip provided a service learning opportunity where the girls connected with a local school and a community where educational opportunities for girls are especially lacking. The seniors had the help of eight juniors who participated in the trip as a part of Junior May Experience which ran for two weeks in late May. www.columbusschoolforgirls.org

Over the summer, the sounds of bulldozers and jackhammers rang across CSG’s courtyards and hallways. Construction of the 400-seat Performing Arts Center is well underway and is still on target for a spring 2014 completion date. This tremendous new building is a visible and outward sign of CSG’s commitment to girls finding and expressing their artistic passions. The Time is Now. Your Support is Needed. CSG has received an outstanding show of support during the past year for the Landmark Capital and Endowment Campaign. With over $4 million in gifts and pledges raised since July, 2012. We thank our donors for their terrific support. Our work is not yet done! Our immediate goal is to now raise another $4 million in gifts and pledges by June 2014 by reaching out to our extended CSG community. Hard hat tours are now being offered. Please contact the Development Office to schedule a tour by calling our new Director of Development & Advancement, Erin Saurborn at 614.252.0781 ext. 130.

Scholars Gala
13
Thursday, October 10, 2013 The Ivory Room at Miranova
As you may have heard, 2012 was the last year for Jubilee and as we celebrated its 20-year anniversary, the Board of Trustees recognized that the time to reenergize this important fundraiser was upon us. As a result, 2013 will be the inaugural year for a new event: The Scholars Gala. Created to work in conjunction with The Scholarship Walk, The Scholars Gala will be the primary fundraiser for CSG’s Scholars Fund. Nearly one in four families enrolled at CSG benefit from the financial aid this fund provides. While we are very proud of the tremendous progress made by Jubilee!, our need for aid continues to be greater than our capacity to support it. Through your support of the Scholars Fund, you can enrich and empower the young women in our community by making a CSG education available to qualified, deserving families for whom it would otherwise not be an option. Because construction on our new Performing Arts Center has forced us to hold The Scholars Gala ’13 at an offsite location, space will be limited. Whether or not you attend the evening’s festivities, there are a variety of ways to support the Scholars Fund and we are hoping for record high levels of participation from the CSG community. To find out more about this evening of delightful food, fabulous cocktails, interesting raffle items and an exciting live auction, please visit our website at www.columbusschoolforgirls.org/scholars. Death released him from a long illness.” Suzanne “Sudie” Durstine Schumacher reports “I was in Houston in April and I had a nice but too short a visit in College Station with Helen Van Hook Spencer, who looks wonderful and very fit. We toured the St. Michael’s school she founded with her husband, Jim. She is still very involved with this terrific school; any child would be fortunate to go there. What a marvelous accomplishment! Judy Roth Garel was honored March 7 and 8 as one of 18 women leaders with the first-ever Capital Women of Distinction award. She was recognized for this achievement by the United Way of Central Ohio’s Women’s Leadership Council, YWCA Columbus, The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, and The Columbus Metropolitan Club.
Charlotte Cunningham is pleased to report: lives in Skytop, Pennsylvania, which is appropriately named and located in the mountains nearby. She loves living there where she can swim daily in her own swimming pool. Her children do not live too far away. Doesn’t that describe a lovely place to retire? Or how about a 70th class reunion next year?” Marilyn Kent Hall shared family news: “My only grandson, Drew, is marrying a delightful lady whom he met in college at Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana. I finally will have a lovely granddaughter on July 6. I was invited by St. Labre Indian School to spend a week in Montana visiting three Indian schools, Yellowstone National Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Montana was on my ‘bucket list’ and I loved it! In November, I flew to Las Vegas to meet Ohio friends for two days of great food and shows -- Donny and Marie was my favorite - then onto Utah to visit the beautiful Brice Canyon and Zion National Park. In January, I had thyroid surgery and am grateful to have received good news on my prognosis. In March, I enjoyed a 10-day vacation with friends at my time-share property in Orlando. It was fun to visit with a friend and her grandchildren who had never been to Disney World! By the way, I have my time-share up for sale if anyone is interested. I usually return to Ohio for the Ohio State Fair or later in October to catch the beautiful fall colors.” Betsy Blocker Kidwell was looking forward to a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean in late winter. Only nine of us were able to attend our 45th CSG reunion, but that’s close to 50% in a graduating class of 20. Linda von Haam Fontana and her husband, David, hosted a potluck in their lovely home in Arlington Friday night, and Anne Miller Paschall and her husband, Bayard, hosted a pizza party Saturday night in their Bexley garden after the school cocktail party. Margo Vorys McCool, Mary Tucker, and Pam Lynn traveled the furthest coming from Colorado, North Carolina and Boston respectively. Mary and Margo had not attended a reunion for a long time so it was really fun to see them, and they hope that they will be able to continue to attend in the future. Pam is a regular, and she shared how Bostonians are coping with the recent Boston Marathon bombings. We all recounted stories about our memories of CSG, our aging parents and most of us shared stories and pictures of our children and now grandchildren.

3-Day Event at the Horse Park, in Lexington. Always fun to be in the barns, behind the scenes. However, this meant missing her Class’ 45th Reunion - a hard choice! Then she was Artistin-Residence at CSG for a week, setting up her work beside Shedd Theater, giving talks and demonstrations to the girls in Lower and Upper School. Finally, Rosalind was a houseguest of long-time family friend, Vicomtesse de Rosiere (Harriet Moeller, Class of ‘46) at Harriet’s lovely home in Palm Beach. Along with catching up with Harriet and her gracious son, Roland, who was visiting from Helsinki, Rosalind gained the interest of two galleries and an agent to represent her art. This happiness was a counterweight to the sad loss of Rosalind’s nephew, Ian M. Mercier II (Toby), her brother’s oldest son, who died unexpectedly from a heart attack May 2. Finally, Rosalind interred her mother, Joan’s, ashes in the peaceful Memorial Garden at St. Alban’s in a private ceremony to commemorate Joan’s birthday three years after her death. Rosalind always thinks of her mother when at CSG, and is thankful her parents had the generosity & insight to give her all those happy years at the school.

I trained with the Leukemia Society’s TeamIn-Training to ride the Death Ride in July. It’s 129 miles and 15,000’ of climbing in one day (what was I thinking?!). I have just started working with the Medical Clown Program that sends professional clowns into hospitals to visit patients. We work in pediatrics, skilled nursing floors, and dementia units. It’s challenging, exhausting and rewarding. I’m trying to learn to paint and am hoping that when Lisa Morrett Reid returns to California, she, Anne Garden and I will get together and do some plein air!

40th Reunion!
The Class of ‘73’s 40th reunion was a blast. The most notable thing about all of us is that nobody has changed at all since graduation! Friday morning, Kate Schaefer and Kathy Korda showed up at CSG to hear Liza Lee discuss new events at the school, and Judge Lynn Toler (’77) talk to the Upper School. Although they stayed for lunch, in a cafeteria that is a far
The Red and Gold Cup is awarded annually to the class which contributes the most to Annual Giving in their reunion year. This year, the Class of 1963 was awarded the Red and Gold Cup as they celebrated their 50th reunion with a gift of $81,750. Thank you, Class of 1963, for your generosity! The Champagne Cup was presented to the Class of 1973, celebrating their 40th reunion, with the highest percentage of participation in Annual Giving. Congratulations and thank you to the Class of 1973! Columbus School for Girls is thankful for each contribution we receive for the Annual Giving Campaign. cry from the old lunch-in-the-basement days, they didn’t participate in the tour or any of the afternoon activities, since they simply had too much to talk about. The rest of their afternoon was spent at one of the German Village breweries, accompanied by Kate’s husband Glenn. Friday evening, we all met at Ellen Havens Hardymon’s house for dinner and our first real get-together. The turnout was amazing: Karen Albers Larson, Susie Bauer, Debbie Baum, Brenda Beavers Hendricks, Elizabeth FergusJean, Martha Gallagher Michael, Kathy Korda, Paula Lausa, Joy McGaw Gillmore, Karen Myers Riggs, Kassie Rose, Kate Schaefer, Leigh Thomas-Bellomy, and Nancy Cornelius Davis (aka “Cornballs”). Somehow, we managed to find time to stop talking long enough to eat, and to rehearse the Centennial Song, written by Albers, which the class was scheduled to perform at the end of Saturday’s Alumnae Meeting. A number of people shared pictures of the latest additions to the next generation of their families, and Elizabeth showed adorable pictures of her new grand-dog. Saturday morning, the group enjoyed brunch at La Chatelaine. We met up again at school Saturday in the afternoon, where we found out that we’d won the Red and Gold Cup for Annual Giving. The Class of ’73 last won an award when the volleyball team took the championship our Senior Year, so this was a big enough surprise that we were so busy talking that we missed the announcement. As planned, most of the group performed at the end of the scheduled meeting activities. Karen Myers Riggs stood on the side of the group and “sang” in American Sign
Language (ASL). Joy McGaw Gillmore stood up front and sang the solos, in a voice that is as exceptional as it’s always been! We won’t mention the names of those of us who The cocktail party was marvelous, and a great change from the old box brunch. Good food, good drink, and we were able to hijack the CSG photographer to take extra pictures of us after the official portrait. We recreated the Senior Stairs picture, as well as our heads-on-the-wall shot from Topknot. We’re not publicizing the ones of Myers and her latest tree. Everyone moved from CSG over to Elizabeth’s house, and those people who had elected to skip the official function joined us. Once again, we talked into the wee hours – although at our advanced ages, for some of us “wee hours” comes a lot earlier than it used to! Sunday morning many of the locals, plus those few out-of-towners who were left, had brunch at Albers’ house. All of the West Coast people had left, and were sorely missed, but we still had a wonderful group, consisting of Joy, Debbie, Kathy, Martha, Elizabeth, Leigh, Ellen, and Brenda, plus of course the hostess. After another several hours of memories (and some really wonderful goodies!), people went their separate directions. The weekend was far too short, and it’s going to be far too long before we’re all together again! Anne Dilenschneider presented the results of her cross-cultural Ph.D. research on women and betrayal, “Forgiveness as the Restoration of Love, Justice and Power: A CrossCultural Approach,” at eh Spiritual Directors International Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota this past April. She was also hoping to give the
same research presentation at the Association of Women in Psychology Convention in March, held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Susan Cutler Harris “…has been a practicing psychotherapist for over 20 years. She is on the board of trustees for the Saul Schottenstein Foundation B. Her daughter, Jenna, is a student at UVA Graduate School and her son, Jason, is a senior in college.” Brenda Beavers Hendricks reports “My last baby is out of the nest! Maggie-Meg Reed responded to the last issue of Forte et Gratum: “I saw the lovely photo in the Alumnae newsletter showing a handful of my classmates/friends at the reunion. It would have been lovely to have been there; I was sorry to miss it, but I just don’t seem to have much free time. There are good things and bad to report: my mother died in June 2011. I miss her deeply, as does my father, who still lives in their home in Galena. My husband, children and I travel often to be with him, just not on Alumnae Weekend! My daughter and son, now 10 and 14, are flourishing, and my husband and I are both so proud of them. We all seem to work a little too hard, and are looking forward to the holidays and rest!”

Kudos to our Class Reunion Organizers Extraordinaire Lori Beckman Bohm and Laura Dehlendorf! A wonderful weekend in April was enjoyed Friday night, Saturday at CSG and then again Saturday night! 30th Reunion!
The class of ‘83 joyfully celebrated our 30th reunion this spring! Know that if you were unable to join us, you were definitely missed. We began the festivities at the lovely home of Courtney Rice Bosca and her family, who graciously hosted a rowdy bunch for cocktails, catching up, and inevitably, cacophony. Joining in the fun were Amy Dunning Sheehan, Lisa Mueller Greene, Sara Wolfe Perrini, Lucy Ackley, Betsy Carlin, Cathy Jones Williard, Lucy Morris Crotty, Charlotte Blair Jones, Andrea Zid Salmi, Joy Beer, and me, Bridget Hart, as well as some brave spouses, significant others and friends from Bexley High School and The Columbus Academy. Saturday was filled with events at the school, and a cocktail party that joined all of the reunion classes. Am I the only person who had trouble navigating my way through the much-changed school ‘campus’ looking for familiar landmarks? Today’s CSG is truly amazing. If you get a chance to tour the school - take it - you will be struck by the blending of old, familiar sights and the most modern facilities. Still, there are powerful memories that still strike a chord… like stumbling upon the old Senior Courtyard and finding a selection of sand castings from our class still bolted to the wall. After festivities at the school, Lucy Crotty’s father was kind enough to open his home to us, and we were able to catch up with some additional classmates - Fiona Horton Medich, Jane Johnson and Amy Schottenstein. There was lots of laughter, storytelling, and even some serious conversation about our shared experiences. I managed to dig up the fourth form ‘horror’ movies our classes made with Mrs. Sehring, ‘The Hand’ and ‘The Juicebox
Monster’, as well as a lost and found video of what we believed was our 15th reunion luncheon at my parents’ house years ago. Apologies to Mr. Morris who still may not be able to watch TV after we completely discombobulated his DVD/cable/remote settings…how many highly educated women does it take to use simple audio equipment? Apparently more than we had in the room! All in all, we had a wonderful time! It was so fun to see everyone who came out, but we missed each and every one of you that weren’t able to make it. Please consider getting in touch to share with us what’s going on in your life through the CSG website, by emailing me at info@bridget-hart.com, or connecting on social media. Everyone can see some pictures from our reunion and catch up with classmates on the Facebook page that Lisa Mueller Greene created named “CSG Class of ‘83”. Submitted by Bridget Hart

Robin Smith shared her past year with us: “I recently returned from an incredible year with the Department of State’s and American Councils’ NSLI-Y program in Kazan, Russia! I will start my freshman year at The Ohio State University in the Honors Program where I plan to double-major in International Relations and Diplomacy, and Russian Language. This summer, you can find me either working at Jeni’s Ice Cream, volunteering with my Russian grandma friends at the Wexner Heritage village, or babysitting the children of several CSG alums! Piper Rassmussen’s full-length play Rumpelstiltskin was chosen as one of seven plays honored by the 2013 Young Playwrights Inc. Now accepting your nominations for the 2014 CSG Alumna of the Year Award
The CSG Alumnae Association is currently accepting nominations for the 2014 CSG Alumna of the Year award through Friday, November 1, 2013. To make a nomination, please visit the CSG website and look under the “Alumnae” tab for the “Alumnae Awards” page. The nomination form asks for information about the candidate’s education, career achievements, community service and any awards or honors she may have received. There is a place to provide additional details, as necessary, too. You may nominate as many candidates as you wish. In 1983, the Columbus School for Girls Alumnae Association initiated an annual award to be given to one of its own members. The essence of the Alumna of the Year award is to spotlight a woman who stands out from others for her contribution in her chosen career or community life. Other than the fact that this woman attended Columbus School for Girls and thinks well of CSG, she need not be a contributor nor a super-active volunteer for the school. She needs to be a woman that CSG is proud to claim but the award is meant to recognize the very high level of her adult accomplishments. The Alumna of the Year award winner will: • Represent the highest principles of CSG • Have shown consistent interest in and loyalty to the school • Have made outstanding contributions in her area of endeavor, either her career or community service • Demonstrate the value of a CSG education. Each year, the Alumnae Association solicits nominations for the Alumna of the Year award from alumnae, family, friends and the greater school community. A selection committee is appointed annually by the president of the Alumnae Association and is composed of five voting members, representing six decades of CSG alumnae by their class affiliation, and the president. The selection committee meets in complete anonymity and confidentiality. The president of the Alumnae Association serves as a non-voting convener of the committee and the Director and Assistant Director of Development - Alumnae Relations, also non-voting, will provide nominated candidates for the committee’s consideration. The 2014 CSG Alumna of the Year Award will be presented during the next year’s Alumnae Reunion Weekend, April 25 and 26, 2014. A complete list of previous Alumna of the Year award winners is posted on the CSG website/Alumnae Awards page, as well.

Faculty and Staff News Retirements
CSG has eight distinguished faculty members who retired this year, representing a loss of 148 years of teaching experience. Each has left an indelible mark of excellence on the school, and all have been greatly respected and loved. Their retirements were announced with sadness on the school’s behalf, but with great pleasure for these remarkable women as they begin new chapters in their lives. Read more about these remarkable retirees online at www.columbusschoolforgirls.org/academics/announcements

Ms. Henry brings to CSG more than 15 years of university coaching, teaching, and athletic administration experience. She began her administrative career with USA Basketball in Colorado Springs and then moved into university athletics. Her distinguished professional credentials include: head basketball coach and professor of physical education at Mount Holyoke, a women’s college of liberal arts in Massachusetts; assistant director of athletics, professor of physical education, and head women’s basketball and tennis coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and assistant director of athletics and head women’s basketball coach at the University of West Florida, a Division II university. For the past year Henry served locally as the physical education teacher for 300 K-8 students at Whitehall Preparatory and Fitness Academy.
Lynné Mott – Director of the Program for Young Children Ms. Mott comes to CSG from the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), where she has been the Manager of Early Childhood Programs, designing curriculum for children age five months through age 11. Especially important for CSG’s Program for Young Children is Ms. Mott’s extensive experience with the Reggio Emilia approach. She was a classroom teacher at St. Mary’s Child Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, when the school began implementing a Reggio Emilia curriculum, and went on to become the Director of Curriculum and Outreach for St. Mary’s for eight years. She was responsible for providing professional development and mentoring for over 2,000 community early childhood educators, supervised educators, and coordinated Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum for various sites in the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
Erin Saurborn – Director of Development Ms. Saurborn comes to CSG from Columbus Academy (CA), where she was the Director of Annual and Major Gifts for the past 10 years. At CA, she managed all aspects of the Annual Fund, and was responsible as well for all facets of the major donor program which included gifts from $2,500 to $100,000 or more—both annual and capital. She was a business analyst for Tween Brands, a senior marketing/advertising financial analyst for QWEST Communications, and the Finance Director for Kmart’s Denver Distribution Center. For seven years, she was the Senior Budget Analyst for Adams County Government in Colorado. She has an extensive list of professional activities and appointments and is well-acquainted with the non-profit world and our donor community.
Cindy Trask – Director of Middle School Mrs. Trask was most recently the Chair of the Science Department at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia, where former CSG Associate Head of School Terrie Scheckelhoff is the Head of School. Mrs. Trask was the Chair of the Science Center and the STEM Committee there and worked closely with the Middle School Head to redesign the entire middle school experience. She also has particular expertise in the fields of STEAM curriculum development, science technology, engineering, arts and math, and in faculty development and evaluation. Her knowledge in these areas will be invaluable to CSG at this point in our history.

Annual Giving Report
The Columbus School for Girls Development Office recognizes members of the CSG community for their generous gifts and support during the past giving year, July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Great care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this report. If your name was omitted or misspelled, we deeply apologize and would be grateful if you would advise us so we may correct our records. Thank-you. 614.252.0781, ext. 131

This past year Columbus School for Girls soared to new heights in pursuit of providing an academically rich, transformational educational experience for young women and girls. This was possible because of the generosity of our community and those listed in the following pages of our 2012-13 Giving Report. I’m delighted to share here with you just a few examples of the many highlights which characterized our school year: •
In Lower School we introduced the concept of financial literacy through the Columbus Junior Achievement program. This helped enhance our young girls’ understanding of the global economy and to anticipate their own future economic success. The program was very well received and continues this year.
•
CSG implemented a pilot 1:1 tablet program in Form VII. Teachers will continue to integrate the Microsoft Surface Pro into Form VII classes in each subject area this year, while Form VI will gain regular introductory access to the Surface tablets. Form VIII will continue to build skills with the existing Lenovo laptops and the software they will use in Upper School.
•
A new humanities program in Middle School utilizes an interdisciplinary approach by linking the study of English and history to enhance the development of critical thinking skills across both academic disciplines.
•
Our new engineering course in Upper School and outstanding new fabrication and design tools, including a state-of-the-art 3-D printer, highlight our commitment to providing superior opportunities for our girls in areas where women are typically underrepresented.
•
In Upper School, 40 percent of the class of 2013 declared an interest to pursue a program or degree in a STEM field, and the class received offers of more than $6.2 million in merit scholarships.
•
In Unicorn athletics, we had state qualifiers in all three Upper School sports seasons, our Middle School tennis team was undefeated, and we celebrated conference championships in both basketball and volleyball!
It truly was an outstanding year for CSG, and I extend my deepest thanks to the entire community for its continued support of the School. As this Report illustrates, the success we shared in Annual Giving was made possible by the abundant and broad-based response CSG receives from every corner of its constituency. It is gratifying to see the commitment of our current parents (71 percent), faculty/staff (99 percent), and alumnae (20 percent) to the Annual Giving Fund, as well as the growing participation of the many parents of alumnae, grandparents, and friends who have helped us to achieve a goal of $1,047,860. My thanks to each of you for helping this beloved school maintain its celebrated profile while continuing to develop in exciting, innovative ways. In addition, the 2012-13 Giving Report highlights the extraordinary level of support many have provided for the School’s Landmark Campaign. These gifts are enabling us to build facilities that will enrich academic programs for generations of girls and to grow our endowment to support our mission well into the future. Our Wellness and Athletics Complex continues to be a topic of excitement internally and with those who visit our campus. The new Performing Arts Center is well underway and will provide beautiful new space for artistic expression as well as for school-wide and community gatherings. None of this would be possible without the many dedicated volunteers who worked to inspire others to join them in providing support to the School. These individuals were tireless in their efforts, and I offer my heartfelt gratitude for their loyalty and perseverance. As you read this issue of Forte et Gratum, and review all that we have achieved together, we can all be proud of CSG and of the ways in which each of us has helped to keep it strong. I am grateful for your continued investment in our mission and look forward to the future. Warmly,
Elizabeth M. Lee Head of School

Ologie concluded a discovery phase last spring, which entailed conducting focus groups or telephone interviews with selected current and past parents, current students, alumnae, faculty, staff, and board members. In addition, they conducted a thorough audit of CSG’s current messaging, including ads, web site, and admission materials. During summer 2013 they crafted a new creative concept to graphically portray CSG’s message strategy. Look for more information on this exciting project as CSG’s rolls out a newly redefined look in the months ahead.
