let alone play together. This isn’t the case at CSG. I also see students studying at tables on the veranda—sharing notes, preparing presentations, delving into complex topics from their classes—I hear a lot of laughter coming from those tables, too! Of course, what I can see from my window only barely scratches the surface of the many ways we keep individuals in mind and our community at heart. At CSG, we ensure that our students learn HOW to think, not WHAT to think. CSG believes in the importance of independent thought and critical analysis of evidence. We encourage our students to question, to examine situations from diverse perspectives and through multiple lenses. CSG students push each other to defend their ideas, to explain their thinking, and they become increasingly comfortable “agreeing to disagree.” We expect that CSG girls will not only figure out how to solve problems, but also how to identify problems that they want to fix and to propose solutions to complex social issues.

LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear CSG community, If you have ever visited the Head’s office tucked in a corner of the beloved mansion at CSG, you know it is a bright, sunny room. While the office presents a few logistical challenges—the door of the office opens into a board room, so I often walk into someone else’s meeting when I exit!— it is, in some ways, an ideal location. One wall is lined with books and items I have collected over the years that inspire and inform the important work of leading our great school. But two walls are lined with windows that offer a view onto the veranda, the Spirit Courtyard, and the Lower School playground. Every so often, between meetings, I take a moment and delight in what I see through those windows. Watching students at work and play when the weather is pleasant is a special opportunity. It is this view that allows me to witness the myriad ways that CSG embodies one of our core values, “individual in mind and community at heart.”

Academic pursuits are a fundamental part of the CSG experience, of course. Time and time again, I hear from our dear alumnae, that the first year of college is easy compared to the junior and senior year at CSG. You comment, appreciatively, on how much better prepared you are than your roommates and new friends at the most selective colleges and universities in the country. However, it is the enduring sense of community that you palpably feel and appreciate, even when you are no longer on

this campus. The opportunities to collaborate, the commitment we make to gathering our entire community together for Convocation, Thanksgiving Program, the MLK Program, and Commencement, as well as divisional, grade-level, and advisory experiences are what truly cement the CSG experience as one that is so unique and treasured. In the past year, I have seen that sense of community at work when we paused to remember longtime science teacher and beloved educator Michael Burton (see reflections on p. 22) and when New York City alumnae came together to celebrate The Grace Notes when they had the honor to perform at Carnegie Hall (see the story p. 18). Time is a finite commodity. Therefore, the way we spend our time demonstrates, in a concrete way, what we value. At CSG, it is clear that we value community. It is what gives us heart, and it ensures that CSG students learn the importance of making, enhancing, and improving community in their lives. Sending powerful women into the world who exemplify “individual in mind and community at heart” is at the core of what we do at CSG. I can think of nothing more rewarding or worthwhile!

Having created a set of core values during the 2018-2019 school year, CSG’s administrative team has defined what the adults at CSG aspire to be as they support our students. The idea that minding our personal wellbeing and the needs of others can be done at once is intentionally lived at CSG. The concept of both keeping individuals in mind and our community at heart applies equally well to what we hope our students will embody. I marvel in witnessing our students taking care of themselves and others, working together for a common goal, or celebrating one another’s accomplishments.

Every day, recess for Middle School and our Program for Young Children overlap. To witness our youngest students playing tag with middle schoolers is extraordinary and rare: the majority of schools in our country are separated—usually by geography as well as by age—so that children from different divisions never see one another,

CSG Children’s Book Week Festival Focuses on the History of Communication

Ameera Fullen ’23 and Rachel Fadel ’24 Place Nationally at Equestrian Competition

Children’s Book Week was all about communication this past spring as students and visitors learned about the many forms of communication throughout history. Attendees had the opportunity to try a quill pen, peck out a sentence on an old typewriter, write a letter at the CSG post office, make their marks inside Lascaux Cave, make a tin can telephone, or participate in a variety of other activities related to communication. The Upper School robotics team showed how they communicate with their robot, and students, then in Form VII, presented their projects on the science of sound.

Equestrians Ameera Fullen ’23 and Rachel Fadel ’24 finished their riding seasons as International Equestrian Association National Champions in May. The accomplishments are marked by a special CSG connection. CSG Alumna Courtney Newby ’09 was their coach.

Cameron Tiefenthaler Wins Physics Photo Award

CSG’s robotics team, Murphy’s Outlaws, showed off their latest robot at the MakerX Columbus Maker Expo in April. The MakerX festival featured digital design and fabrication, including robots, drones, electronic music, digital art, maker spaces, 3D printing, VR/AR, STEM learning, and more. Students demonstrated the robot and talked about the process and principles that went into creating it as visitors stopped by their tent.

SUMMER 2019 Ada Menk-Brown ’26 in Top Youth Climbers Nationwide

Cameron Tiefenthaler ’20 captured an amazing photo and the second place award in the in 2019 AAPT High School Physics Photo Contest, making her photo one of the top nationally. Cameron’s picture, chosen from over 600 entries from all over the world, was entitled “Physics in Phlight” and was awarded second place in the “Natural” category at the AAPT Summer Meeting. According to Cameron, “This occurrence was seen spontaneously outside my window on a trip to visit my grandmother in Iowa. The snapshot captures the shadow of our plane in what seems to be a rainbow halo. While this assumption is quite common, the optical phenomenon is actually called a “glory”. Glories differ from rainbows in that they occur when the light refracted inside water droplets has been altered by waves. They are only visible when clouds are beneath an object and the observer, sun, and clouds form a straight line.”

Dr. Kathy Sullivan Visits Lower School Dr. Kathy Sullivan, a former NASA astronaut, crew member on three space shuttle missions, and the first American woman to walk in space was the special guest for a Lower School chapel in September. Through photos and videos, Dr. Sullivan painted a picture of what it is like to be in space- from working outside of the shuttle and conducting scientific experiments to routine activities like working out and eating.

Author Jasmine Warga visited Lower School and Middle School in October. The internationally bestselling author poignantly shared her journey of becoming an author, even when many wanted her to pursue a medical career. The daughter of immigrants, she also talked about the importance of education for girls across the globe and the themes highlighted in her most recent book, Other Words for Home. It was an engaging exchange of thoughts and ideas as students were challenged to think about how our backgrounds and experiences shape our stories. Ms. Warga shared how refugees around the world all desire to live safely and securely, but factors that are out of their control uproot their families. “We’re in a period of human history where empathy is needed more than ever. As the mother of two little girls, I’m constantly trying to teach them the idea that no one ever grows poor from giving. That sharing what you have does not make what you have worth any less. I guess that’s what this book is really about—the ever-growing need for generosity. And generosity is really just another word for love. So let’s work on giving more love to others, as well as to ourselves.” (Author’s Note in Other Words for Home)

At one point in her presentation, Dr. Sullivan was describing one of her space walks where she spent three hours working on systems outside of the shuttle. She asked the students how far they thought she traveled during those three hours. You could hear and sense the wonder and amazement in the room when she told them she traveled all the way around the world twice during those three hours. After her presentation, Dr. Sullivan answered over 30 thoughtful questions from the students. Their questions were deep and inquisitive.

ARTS Middle School Theater Presents Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe October brought the Middle School Theater production of Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe to the Agnes Jeffrey Shedd Theater stage. Three of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous pieces (The Raven, The Tell Tale Heart, and The Fall of the House of Usher) came to life, as mystery, murder, suspense, and drama swirled about in this spooky piece. At the center of the plot, Poe, who describes his stories as set in the darkness of his own mind, tries desperately to convince himself, and the audience, that he’s not “mad.” This fun show had just the right feel for October and Halloween. Unsung Heroes: Upper School Theater Presents Decision Height In November, the Upper School Theater presented Decision Height by Meredith Dayna Levy. The historical piece tells the story of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots who served stateside during World War II. Audiences followed the friendship of six women as they navigated the rigors of flight school and military conditioning while developing a tender bond that becomes the driving force behind their triumph. The fast-paced tale featured sisterhood, grit, determination, strength, intelligence, and empowerment, while giving the cast and crew an opportunity to showcase CSG’s new rear projector technology. The enhanced production capability allowed the crew to use historical images and video of flight to deliver an immersive audience experience. Need caption

“Is it colder or hotter in space?” “How long was the training?” “ What did the medics do to evaluate you when you got back from space?” “ When you go upside down, does your blood rush to your head?” “ What did your family think about you going to space?” Sullivan’s book Handprints on Hubble: An Astronaut’s Story of Invention was released in October.

Mandarin Teacher Ping Wu Receives Teaching Award

Patricia Miranda receives Dorothy Sehring Award

Mandarin language teacher Ping Wu received the Celebrating Teachers Award from DePaul University’s College of Education this past spring. The award honors teachers who have dedicated their lives to the support, cultivation, and advancement of their students. Through the Celebrating Teachers Initiative, the College of Education invites DePaul juniors Ping Wu and seniors university-wide to nominate a former K-12 instructor whom they feel significantly influenced his or her life. Ping was nominated by CSG alumna Michaela Milligan ’15 who submitted a poignant tribute to her service as a teacher. She received the award at DePaul’s convocation in June.

Upper School English teacher and Humanities Department Chair, Patricia Miranda, was the recipient of The Dorothy Sehring Award Jennifer Ciccarelli, Patricia Miranda, and Sarah Brewer for Excellence in Teaching. The award is presented every other year by the Head of School to a returning faculty member who has completed at least five continuous years of employment at CSG and demonstrated a deep love for and commitment to the education of young people. As one of Patricia’s nominators said, “Patricia has high standards for her students, and the patience and warmth to lead them to meet and exceed those standards; she expects excellence, and helps the students see that excellence in themselves and their work. She’s also always pursuing ways to innovate her teaching and encourage creative pedagogy in others.”

English teacher Meghan Hattaway, Ph.D. selected for summer Humanities retreat English teacher Meghan Hattaway was selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar this past summer. Selected from a national applicant pool, Meghan joined fifteen other teachers from across the country for a seminar entitled “Reimagining Jane Eyre and Great Expectations: Teaching Literature through Adaptation.” The 3-week program was Meghan Hattaway held at The University of California, Santa Cruz. The Endowment is a federal agency that, each summer, supports these enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines. Meghan is excited to share some of the ideas she explored with her CSG students. “The seminar expanded my thinking about the ways in which the humanities can and should be experimental, just as the sciences are,” Meghan said. “Creativity and a sense of “play” are vital in my classroom, and this year, I remind myself that I’m not simply teaching books, but rather teaching my students how to do things with books, because in doing so they become critics and creators in their own right.”

M.I.T. backed Fab Foundation visits CSG to learn from teachers PYC teacher Devie Hiller and Innovation Lab teacher Karen Scranton hosted Melvin LaPrade, a consultant with the Fab Foundation’s Devie Hiller and Karen Scranton with Melvin LaPrade SCOPES-DF project, at CSG this fall. The Fab Foundation’s SCOPES-DF project, backed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), brings together fabbers, makers, and educators to deepen the understanding of the “what”, “how” and “why” of STEM disciplines. LaPrade founded the National Urban Research Group (NURG) when he was a Ph.D. Candidate at M.I.T. of Urban Studies and Planning. He became interested in CSG’s work with computational thinking in the classroom after seeing Devie and Karen present at the Constructing Modern Knowledge institute this past summer in Boston. Melvin was impressed and added CSG to his list of schools to visit as he shapes his work around computational thinking and providing access to practical resources to educators nationwide. The focus of this visit was on what CSG teachers are doing with students in the 5/6 class through Form V as far as the intersection of nature experiences, computer science, and physical construction.

85 Years at CSG: Kay Fetters, Pam Garrett, and Susan Powell Retire The start of the school year had a different feel this August as three members of the CSG community took on new roles as retirees. After a collective 85 years teaching, learning, and leading at CSG, Kay Fetters, Pam Garrett, and Susan Powell decided that the 20182019 school year at 65 S. Drexel Avenue would be their last. The decision was bittersweet for them and the community alike, but in June, faculty, staff, students, and families came together to honor and celebrate with the women who have become part of the fabric of this community. Kay Fetters Kay Fetters’ stop at CSG was supposed to be temporary when she came to the Lower School as a long term substitute in 2003. Since then, she has taught Form II and Form IV, in a teaching career that spans 23 years, 16 of them at CSG. Kay has not only guided the learning and social-emotional development of Lower School students in the classroom, she served as an assistant soccer coach with the Unicorn Sports program, taught Sign Language for CSG’s Summer Program, and was regularly involved in CSG’s diversity and inclusion efforts as a member of the SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) professional development group and the I.D.E.A (Inclusion. Diversity. Equity. Advocacy) committee. Known to support and mentor other teachers, Kay’s influence and love for learning spreads far beyond CSG. She is the author of two books. With Strength and Grace: Stories from Cancer Survivors was published in 2017 and Will I Ever Find a Best Friend? won the Multicultural Children’s Publication Award in 2015. Kay is excited to focus on family and to have more time to write and dedicate to her other interests.

Pam Garrett Pam Garrett was a mainstay at CSG for 33 years. Having served four Heads of School as Executive Assistant during her tenure, Pam is known for having incredible grace under pressure. Beyond her duties in the Head’s office, Pam has served as advisor to the Beauty of African American Culture Club (BAACC), and she has been a warm, inviting person to whom generations of students have come for a hug, for words of encouragement, and for her incredible ability to focus on each of them every time they were in her presence. In her retirement, Pam is looking forward to spending time with her family and traveling. She will also continue to volunteer her time with many community organizations and causes for which she has always demonstrated her passion.

“ The special relationships faculty and staff have with students are particularly powerful at Columbus School for Girls. Kay, Pam, and Susan have not only engaged with students in meaningful and – for many students – unforgettable ways, but they have embodied the strength and grace that we intend to foster in every CSG girl.”

Susan Powell With nearly four decades as a preschool teacher and 36 years at CSG, Susan Powell is the epitome of a lifelong learner. Known for her ability to connect with every student and support parents in a tremendous way, Susan acknowledges that she, “grew up at CSG,” crediting the school community with an ethos that encouraged her to be a risk-taking teacher and a lifelong learner. Her two trips to Reggio Emilia, Italy, are standout experiences that forever altered the way she approached working with children and families. Generations of families have come to love and respect Susan’s student-centered method of teaching. From the treehouse which she and students built together to the water table in the PYC natural playscape, evidence of Susan’s influence can be seen throughout the PYC, but it is when you see her engaged with CSG’s littlest learners, that you see her power. Susan was awarded the first Dorothy Searing Award for Excellence in Teaching at CSG. In between spending more time with her family, Susan has promised to return to the CSG community to be a substitute teacher next year.

Remembering Mr. B CSG pays tribute to Michael Burton (1956-2018) Michael Burton, longtime Middle School science teacher, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 25. Known for his big, energetic personality, Mr. B, as students called him, was committed to pushing every student to be the best she could be, both in the classroom and in co-curricular pursuits. Born November 13, 1956, in Chicago, Michael was a social worker before finding his passion for the classroom. In 1989, his wife Micah’s new job brought their family to

Perhaps there is no better way to honor Mr. Burton than through the words of his students. When news of his passing was shared replace with on social media, the CSG community responded with their memories. We are sharing a few of them here: “Mr. Burton was the ultimate teacher and human being, a gentleman who inspired the desire to learn, a scholar who demanded the best from his students so that they would believe in themselves, and an intellectual who encouraged critical thinking and curious minds. He was also funny, warm, and a delight to be around. We have lost one of the most decent men I have ever met.” – Karin Stump P ’14 ’17 Columbus and Mr. Burton to Columbus School for Girls. Don’t defer your dream... Celebrating Columbus School for Girls’ Class of 2019 What happens to a dream deferred? Reading from Langston Hughes’ famous poem “Harlem”, on May 29, 2019, Dr. Rebekah Gee ’93 challenged the Class of 2019 to never find out. It was a memorable day on CSG’s main campus as hundreds of parents, family members, friends, and alumnae joined CSG’s Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students to celebrate the School’s 53 newest alumnae.

“Columbus School for Girls has prepared you to leave,” Dr. Gee said. “ I know that because I remember the lessons I learned here. I was taught to stand tall, to lean in, to raise my hand, to correct people who use gender biased language. [CSG taught me] that my voice matters and to assume I could always, always have a seat at the table, and if one wasn’t set for me, to just pull up a chair.”

“The advice I give to you is to believe in yourselves and the ability to achieve your dreams,” Dr. Gee said. “Don’t defer them. Don’t back down, and don’t accept being excluded.”

Before hearing from Dr. Gee, the class and audience heard from 2018-19 Student Council President Mary Hernon ’19 who expressed her love for her classmates and her confidence in the paths they would take next.

A graduate of CSG’s Class of 1993, Dr. Gee currently serves as the Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, the state’s largest public agency. She oversees public health and other direct service programs for citizens in need, such as behavioral health, developmental disabilities, aging and adult services, emergency preparedness, and the Medicaid program. She is also the mother of five, including twin girls who were in the audience. As the graduates listened, Dr. Gee focused her remarks on women’s rights, the wage gap, and how, even when it seems difficult to speak up, women must never silence their own voices.

We strive for greatness and to do our absolute best...What a truly remarkable class...You are intelligent, strong, passionate, brave, caring, loving, and determined. You stand up for what you believe in, come together and take action when need be, and you care for and help one another.” Hernon is currently a freshman at the University of Washington. 1945 - 75h Reunion!

Fran Richardson writes Tucson’s HOT weather will soon be here, but this CSG “Relic” from Class of 1944 is still much alive, a survivor of some artful tumbles, reluctantly giving up driving more than 8 miles from my apartment, and still enjoying the talented Tucson Symphony music. I remain on the TSO Honorary Council. This Orchestra has just celebrated its 90th year of continuous yearly performances! Not too much on long distance traveling, heeding the advice of my mother, Elisabeth T. Sterner- (1917), which is: when your medicine “bag” becomes larger than your cosmetic “bag”, It’s time to reconsider your travel plans!” With a very new computer, I am now able to tell it my memoirs and like a good scribe, it types out what I’ve just said!! Cool!! I must add I am very impressed with the young women’s achievements as featured in the latest CSG newsletter. Fantastic!! Sending greetings and blessings to all classmates and friends of my era.

Jean F. Hengst passed away in St. Petersburg, Fl. on March 6, 2018 at the age of 89. She is survived by her daughter Dana, granddaughters Alexandria Kellner and Olivia Smith and 3 great grandchildren Leo, Eva and Ben. She is so very missed by many friends as well! She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend!

1956 Class Representative: Andrea Smith Lorig Andrea Lorig writes: If it’s “terribly strange to be 70, it’s downright challenging to be 80” or, as the case may be, 81. We lose classmates, friends, carefree mobility and reading glasses. It’s sad, it’s frustrating but, what a whee of a ride we have had along the way. Bruce and I moved to a retirement facility on Mercer Island in July 2018. Here he could find the extended care needed as he deals with dementia and Parkinson’s. I could enjoy the company of fellow residents and more interesting programs than my schedule finds time for. Of course, downsizing has been a major amusement as I cull 60 years of accumulated glop and a staggering amount of family memorabilia that encompasses 5 generations of my family. They never threw anything out! Well, neither did I and it has come back to haunt me: bathmats from a rental in 1963, sordid dance programs, unidentified ancestral photographs, biodegrading news clippings and worse. Good grief, when did I get a Sharpshooter citation from the (gag) NRA? Our home finally sold last week so; the games continue. Our son, Gray, flew out to lay claim to all the furniture we couldn’t use. Daughter, Alison, is attempting to organize me and the deployment of everything leftover. I wish her luck. Older daughter, Reilly, is retired, on disability and living near Sequim. I’ll go into details on our illustrious extended family in the next issue. Joanna Foster writes: So here we are, another year older and grateful that we are. Recently, I’ve talked to several classmates only to discover that some of us are being challenged by very serious health issues. Aside from being saddened and shocked by these announcements, I have been enormously impressed by the courage and optimism of these longtime friends. As we have heard only too frequently, “old age ain’t for sissies”!

Jerry and I have enjoyed another year of life pretty much divided between our summer here in Ashland, Oregon and San Antonio. We summer in Ashland because our daughter, Sheila Foster Carder ’84 and 11-year-old granddaughter, Clarity, live here. Our other children and grandchildren seem to visit us mostly in San Antonio. This year as a special gift, my sister, Miriam Walz McCall ’66 will visit us for Christmas with all her children and grandchildren. What a wonderful surprise! May we gracefully move through this next year. And I send out special prayers for Andy Smith Lorig and Sue Andrea Brown.

1957 Class Representative Needed Judy Redd writes: Hello to the class of 1957. I did return to Columbus in May for 10 days to visit with my son. Then 10 days in Philadelphia to visit with my daughter. A wonderful vacation. I hope to do the same every year. I have one grandson still in high school, the rest are in college or pursuing their careers. We are in the middle of summer, although Autumn is slowly approaching. My garden, along with the others are growing beautifully. This is a Senior Facility, and sadly we have lost 5 people. On an upbeat note, we had a wedding. It seems one is never too old to find love. Currently, I am in a volunteer mode. Treasurer for our Garden group, handling birthday cards for our monthly Birthday Party, and making calls for the local Democratic Party. I feel so fortunate to be here, with my daughter and her family.

1959 Class Representative: Ramona Lopez Dreebin Monin Lopez Dreebin writes: Six members of the Class of 1959 gathered at CSG this year to celebrate our reunion. It does not seem possible that 60 years ago we walked down the aisle of the congregational church on Broad Street in those long white dresses, clutching our roses, singing the songs for the last time and exiting our lives at CSG. But one never really leaves CSG permanently. Whenever I return for a reunion visit, it almost feels as though I never left. There is a warmth and welcoming atmosphere. Of course, the growth and physical changes in the school quickly bring me back to reality. Toni Seymour, Betsy Kauffman, Lynn Haverick Ryan, Linda Yenkin and Monin Lopez Dreebin met at the school Friday with other reunion classes for a lovely luncheon with Head of School, Jennifer Ciccarelli. Jenny Ross Edwards met us after lunch for tours of the school, the singing of all school and class songs and some visiting time with each other. That evening we all returned to the campus for a cocktail party, some delicious foods and more chatting and visiting with other reunion attendees, followed by our formal class picture amid giggles and wine. Saturday, the six of us joined other reunion classes at the school for the Alumnae Brunch and then enjoyed a performance by Sara Abou Rashed in the Agnes Jeffrey Shedd Theater. We went our separate ways to visit with family and friends before gathering for dinner at Giuseppe’s Ritrovo in Bexley, our first official class event. It was great continuing to catch up with everyone’s news, while enjoying a tasty Italian meal and more wine, of course. On Sunday, Lynn, Toni and I met Betsy, her sister, and a friend, both reunion attendees, as well, at the Columbus Museum of Art for a light brunch in the cafe and a short visit to the Museum. Later that day, Linda, Toni and I had an adventure visiting a new museum near Blacklick woods, “Otherworld”. It hasn’t opened officially yet, but we were able to persuade the crew to let us take a peek. It is a very intriguing place of color, light and sound and I would love to come back for a visit when it is finished. Ours was a small but satisfying reunion. We missed seeing more classmates, but, well, there is #65 to look forward to in a few years.

1964 Class Representatives Linda Benua and Carla Pollack Lane Carla Lane, along with Linda Benua write: About our recent class reunion, Mary Ann Beverly reports: “How could it already be the 55th? No matter! Molly Kauffman Marsh, Julie McGuckin and I began our celebration at the school’s Friday luncheon honoring those classes celebrating the 50th Reunion and above, and it ended on a high note, with all of us going out for a hilarious Saturday night dinner with Andrea Alloway Ralston. Molly, Julie and I stayed loyal to class motto “Dauntless” for the CSG events and attended just about everyone. We also caught up with other CSG friends, including Linda Benua’s sister, Carol Benua Major ’67, and Molly’s sister, Betsy Kauffman ’59, and her classmates. And we made some amazing reconnections: for me it was a real treat to see Rachel Cashdollar Bennett ’87, a childhood friend of my daughter Katie; and Molly’s granddaughter Jordan Westin ’24 extended our campus tour with a personal, in-depth look at the art and music programs and facilities. And, oh, by the way, she confirmed that the delicious food CSG served us that weekend was on a par with what CSG serves all the time now (forget the fish sticks!). It was a great 55th Reunion!” Kathy Tice Phillips writes that she’s still alive and on the go. The summer started with a trip to Pensacola for the ceremony honoring her middle son’s retirement from the U.S. Navy. “It seems like I just dropped him off in Annapolis!” she says. Then she went on to the family cottage in Good Hart, Michigan, with her sister Patty Tice Offenberg, ’62, where they had a nice visit with cousins Carolyn Thomas Christy, ’60, and Susan Thomas, ’64, who have a cottage nearby. On return, she headed to Whitetop, Virginia, to take part in the Virginia Creeper bike ride. “It was 17 miles (downhill) with the whole family, eight adults and seven grand kids on 30 wheels. Wheee! It was so much fun. I highly recommend it if you live nearby! Now,” she

adds, “I’m back in Greensboro getting ready for a November-December one-person show of my pastels.” Julie McGuckin writes with sadness that she attended her father, Malcolm McGuckin Leland, as he died on July 31, 2019. Mr. Leland was one of the foremost artists in the mid-century modern movement. Some of his work can be seen at malcolmleland.com.

1965 - 55th Reunion! Class Representative Dectora Coe Jeffers Dectora Coe Jeffers writes: Submitting these notes in mid-August, I am feeling the relief of impending coolness and the anticipation of a change of season. I hope the summer has treated you well with ample doses of relaxation, travel if you are still able (we stayed home), visits with family and friends, and some good books. On June 28 at Barbara Bonner’s home in Housatonic (in the Berkshires), four of us gathered and recognized each other without too much trouble. Diane Yassenoff (and her lovely granddaughter Kalia), Pam Schofield, Barbara and I (and my husband Chris) all came together for fine dining, wine and animated talk (politics of course)…then broke for the night….then resumed (minus the wine) the next morning at breakfast and lunch the next day before we all went our separate ways. Di and Kalia came from Oregon, Pam from the Boston area, Chris and I from Hartford. It was a joyous and memorable time – a gift to each of us that we all continue to treasure. Barbara has just completed her third book, this one entitled Inspiring Forgiveness (the previous two were Inspiring Generosity and Inspiring Courage). We congratulate her on her achievements, the latest one coming at the same time as her daughter and son-in-law’s publications! Like mother like children! I attended my 50th college reunion in early June (as I imagine others of you did). The highlight was a talk given by Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton describing their paths to the Office of Secretary of State.

The weather was perfect and the campus stunning – a time of year when we were all absent during our years there. It was a sad surprise, while viewing a memorial tribute to deceased classmates, to discover the name of CSG (and Wellesley) classmate Joyce Davidson. I have a fond memory of when she invited me to join a group of girls as guests of her father to dine in Boston our freshman year in college. Laura Arch has a new address. “We went from a 5600 square feet house to 2600. I’m still getting used to the downsize, but it was a good move for us.” Her new address is 119 Towne Place Drive, Hendersonville, NC 28792. Pamela Schofield and her husband Walter take great delight in their grandson Adrian who is now eight months old. They care for him twice a week and are managing to keep up with him thus far. Keep me updated with your news! Send it at any time and I will be ready with it when CSG’s next deadline rolls around.

1967 Class Representatives: Mary Larrick Schmertz and Carol Benua Major The Class of 1967 acknowledges with sadness the death of Joyce Davidson Daughaday ’65 sister of Judy Davidson Hoye, of leukemia, on May 23, 2019. Judy’s address is 10497 Curry Palm Lane, Ft. Myers, FL 33966; her email address is jdhoye@me.com.

celebrated with birthday dinners (complete with cakes and party hats), lunch at Panera in Westerville, and brunch at Brio Tuscan Grille. Several of us were able to visit lovely Inniswood Metro Gardens. Everyone enjoyed the weekend, but we missed those of you who couldn’t be there. Mary Monaghan Lisko observed her 70th not only at our weekend but also by going with her family to a resort. She and her husband planned to go out west for three weeks at the end of August to celebrate as well. She added, “There’s really no news here and sometimes that’s the best.” Agreed!

1968 Class Representative: Pamela Lynn

1969 Class Representative Candace Corson 50th Reunion gathering in Columbus – What a beautiful and extraordinary reunion we experienced this spring of 2019 (April 26-28) as the class of 1969, for those of us who could attend. And our thoughts went out to those who were not able to be with us. Here are the 13 women who were able to be there: Babette Gorman, Christine Wittmann Snyder, Laurie Zox Leder, Melinda Case Griffin, Beth Crane, Kate Morse Erwin, Susan Burchfield Holliday, Ann Joyce, Nancy Sirak Hudson, Candace Corson, Lois Backus Jacob, Patty Larrick Embree, Beth Inglis Simmons

Sandi Jordan writes that she has recently moved from Arizona to Lancaster, Ohio: “This Buckeye Girl has come back to her OH roots!” She made the trip of 1,949 miles in three days, pulling a U-Haul trailer in her SUV, “a LONG trip.” She’s excited that, with new OSU coach Ryan Day, both she and the Buckeyes are experiencing a new beginning. Welcome back to Central Ohio, Sandi! Fourteen members of the Class of 1967 (and one intrepid husband) – Carol Benua Major, Molly Carlile, Marilee Gallagher, Joy Jelliffe Endo, Caroline Johnson Voderberg, Patty Kauffman Strickland, Linda Krech Archer, Mary Larrick Schmertz, Priscilla Leach, Kitty Mills Anderson, Mary Monaghan Lisko, Sally Ross, Barbie Van Fossen Weidner, and Julie Van Allen Shamos and her husband Michael – gathered together over CSG Alumnae Weekend in April to commemorate our 70th birthdays this year. In addition to events at the school, we

We shared food from Condado’s Tacos the first night (donating the leftovers to a homeless shelter), with a huge thanks to Beth Crane and Richard McKee for sharing your beautiful home with us. We all went to the lovely Columbus Fish Market for dinner the second evening – a beautiful time of sharing, recollections, sharing current news & views, and most importantly, wonderful reconnection with each others’ lives and our formative years together at CSG. Touring the school, having a wonderful reception and brunch at CSG and being in the Saturday breakout sessions, and the alumnae awards event, were all highlights. I can safely say that there was an enormous sense of gratitude amongst us all, for our amazing school, and of gratitude for all the people who made our years there possible, and for the traditions and the current beautiful leadership of this incredibly special school. And a deep sense of thankfulness that we’ve been fortunate to live this long; how wonderful that we had the ability to return, and to greet and catch up with one another, and to realize how blessed we have all been. And we can encourage each other in these interesting and challenging times ahead.

As we unpacked and set up the room, Libby and I had fun sharing memories of our CSG days and catching up. In July, I got to spend time with Fiona Horton Medich in Columbus, and Lucy Morris Crotty in Saratoga. It’s been wonderful catching up with so many CSG friends. Debbie E. McGhee departed her life on April 15, at the University Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Kathy Carberry Skestos reports that her daughter Diana ’22 started at CSG last year and is currently a Sophomore. She really

likes CSG, especially the theater program. Her brother Julius will be a Junior at the Wellington School. He also enjoys theater and helped start a cross country team this year. Way to go Julius! Running in any capacity isn’t my thing, so kudos to you!!! Additionally, Kathy mentioned how fun it was to see everyone at the reunion in the spring and she looks forward to seeing folks again soon! I’ll second that! Ellen Glimcher states that she finally sold her gorgeous house (AK’s words) in German Village! Not to worry ladies! Ellen moved to a home on the beach in Bal Harbour, Florida, and is encouraging everyone to call her for recommendations on where to go/ what to see. So far Ellen’s already had visits from classmate Kristin Kirk Florey, my sister Marla Krupman ’81, and met up with Candy Katz Kerker at Bal Harbour shops. As a docent at the Perez Art Museum, Ellen would be happy to give anyone a tour. The museum itself is quite beautiful, nestled in Biscayne Bay & designed by the Pritzker Prize winning architecture team Herzog and de Meuron. Email me at csgunicorn84@ gmail.com if you want Ellen’s contact information. Katie Kessler Chatas writes in that Sophie Chatas ’12, just stared medical school at Michigan and Cecilia Pasevento ’13 is in her class. Congrats and best of luck ladies. Beth Wilhoyte Gilpin says: after enjoying a relaxing summer in Chautauqua, NY, she packed up her eldest daughter Chloe, for her freshman year at Belmont University in Nashville, where she’ll be majoring in music business and songwriting. Beth says Chloe is a very talented musician, and she’s very excited for her. Beth’s youngest daughter Sophie has been very busy as a preprofessional ballerina. A year ago she studied at the legendary Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, while last year she studied in NYC, and will study there again this year as well… Which, as Beth exclaims... “means I am an empty nester! Now the real work begins to complete all the thousands of projects that have been put on hold for far too long.” If I’m correct, one of those projects is right here in Columbus, right Beth? Make sure to call when you’re in town please As for me, your newly minted Class Rep – I’ve recently become accredited in teaching a class for people with Parkinson’s Disease – it’s called Delay the Disease. Delay the Disease is a program that was developed by one of our very own CA ’84 classmates – David Zid. I’m teaching a class at the JCC, but should you need help... let me know. And, as you read above, Ellen Glimcher has moved to Bal Harbor, Florida. I hope to get down to see her soon, however, for anyone else living in

S. Fla, I wanted to mention that my sister-in-law, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, is a Freshman Congresswoman this year, for the Fla 26 – South Florida and parts of the Keys! Joe and I went to DC for the swearing in festivities. Not entirely sure what was better – seeing Debbie sworn in, walking around and sitting in the seats on the Congressional Floor right after a vote, or attending the reception in Speaker Pelosi’s office. Even at our age, the experience was unforgettable! Finally, I just want to mention that Marla Krupman ’81 and I went to Mrs. Backus’ memorial service on August 10th. Wow, 105 years old! We saw some faculty/staff from back in the day, and handful or so of CSG grads. It was a lovely service – Mrs. Backus seemed to have had an amazingly interesting life. Who knew?! Way beyond the woman I recall seeing at CSG for the umpteen years I walked the hallowed halls. So thankful Marla and I went.

1985 - 35th Reunion! Class Representative: Robin Ives Canowitz Kelly Speakes-Backman is missing Kate Addison terribly, who moved to Amsterdam this summer! Aside from that, she’s keeping herself busy with her family in Annapolis and at her job in Washington DC as CEO of the Energy Storage Association. Lindsey Sears writes My twin daughters, Bronwen & Emma, graduated from Dublin Jerome H.S. this past May and both will be playing soccer in college! Bronwen will be attending the Farmer School of Business at Miami University, and Emma will be at THE Ohio State University. The girls will play against each other on Friday, September 13th (B plays defense & Em plays offense). It will be a real showdown, as loads of “trash” talk was going on in our household this summer! We will be hosting a large tailgate party before the game, so anyone who’s in town is more than welcome to come out and cheer on the Sears twins. Go Redhawks & Go Buckeyes! Shari McCaskill Lamar just returned from a vacation in the Netherlands. She has plans to travel to Thailand and Australia next year. She is gearing up for her daughter’s senior year at CSG and looks forward to seeing everyone at our reunion in the spring. Kate Addison moved to Amsterdam and is enjoying living overseas. Amsterdam is an amazing city with beautiful scenery and tons of things to do. Kate loves biking the canals and all of the wonderful culture. If anyone makes it out that way, she invites you to visit! Lena Myers Lini is still in Orlando. Both of her boys are playing traveling baseball, so

they are busy traveling from Cooperstown, NY to Branson, MO and every place in between. Lena is working for a Managed Care Company as Sr. Director of client implementations. She loves Florida life and welcomes any visitors. Jamie Traeger-Muney just celebrated 10 years of living in Israel and would love visitors. Her son Noah is 21 years old and has spent the last two years as a paratrooper in the Israeli army. This has been an amazing experience for him full of leadership experiences, he will be done in March and then looks forward to doing some extended travel both in the United States and the Far East. Jamie’s daughter, Hannah, just graduated from high school and will be doing a leadership training gap year before joining the army. Jamie would have never guessed that they would live in Israel or that she would have children in the military, but it has been a great experience. Evan and Jamie are doing well and just celebrated 26 years of marriage.

Absolutely loving life here in every way. Also got married in November. Change is scary but good!” Dayna Baird Paine writes, “We continue to be able to spend time together whenever we make it to Ketchum, Idaho. In March, I transferred from the VA to the Army Corps of Engineers and am enjoying my 1hr bus commutes to Portland, OR (decompression time). My youngest son, Yukaiya, graduated High School in June and will attend Clark Community College to study Japanese and secondary education. We also plan to join him when he plays the snare drums at the New Year’s Parade in Vatican City, Italy. I am also getting married to Thupten Tsering (an Oregon native) in Vegas on Oct. 26! Ali Livingston Hildahl writes: About to start on my 9th year teaching at CA. This year I will be with the 3-year-old...so that should be interesting. My little guy, Davey, is starting Pre-K this year at CA. This summer my family drove down to Alabama to gulf shores for a fun beach vacay. The drive was laborious, but the beach and seafood were fantastic. Davey and I just got back from visiting my parents in AZ. We were in Pinetop where the temperature was nearly 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. We fished, visited petrified forest and Painted Desert and swam. Now we are gearing up for another school year. I hope all is well with everyone!! Jean Aukerman Vickers writes: I’m not sure if Lisa already shared, but she and I will soon be classmates again! Imagine my

1994 Class Representative: Katherine Taub Aris Roush writes: I am so excited to share that I was the Event Lead for World Pride NYC – Youth Pride. The event took place at Summer Stage in Central Park on June 29th and hosted over 10,000 youth and their adults! On June 30th, I served on the World Pride NYC March Operations team which hosted 150,000 marchers. The March step off was at noon and ended at 12:32a.m. on July 1st! In mid-July, I was invited to Denver, Colorado to help launch a new weeklong residential summer camp – Camp Youth Seen – for Queer & Trans youth ages 10-18, with special focus on Queer & Trans Youth of Color – the first of its kind in the U.S. This year marked my 6th consecutive season as a Queer Camp staff member. I will be finishing out my summer of Pride volunteering at NYC Black Pride on August 17th at Coney Island. I am still living in Manhattan and if any of my CSG family wants to get together, by all means – be in touch

Financial Highlights

Dear CSG, It is a privilege to present to you Columbus School for Girls’ 2018-19 Annual Report on Giving. I am delighted to share that your dedication and commitment have once again ensured a sound financial position for CSG.

CSG closed FY19 in a sound financial position thanks to the careful planning, management and stewardship of resources, and especially to the continued generosity of our philanthropic community. We thank you for your outstanding partnership.

The generosity of our community is humbling. Gifts of time, talent, and treasure are what make the extraordinary academic experience CSG provides possible. Your support enables our school to endure and our girls to thrive, ensuring that we continue to deliver the most talented faculty, innovative technology, enriching arts, competitive athletics, and a curriculum designed specifically for girls. For your incredible partnership, I THANK YOU. During the 2018-19 school year, CSG continued to advance the goals of our strategic plan and priorities. I am excited to share just a few of the year’s highlights with you:

Lead, Deepen, Flourish and Thrive:

Michael P. Glimcher Chair, Board of Trustees

• Faculty and staff performed an audit of CSG’s academic offerings in order to ensure we maintain an inspiring curriculum that reflects the latest research in cognitive science, classroom practice, and learning theory. As a result, the 2019-20 school year has introduced new inquiry-based social studies curriculum in the Lower School, leadership and Mandarin classes in the Middle School, and enhanced physical education and history offerings in Upper School. In addition, Introduction to Computer Science 1A & 1B, Modern Poetry, Mathematics’ Great Theorems, and Mathematical Modelling for Environment and Social Justice have been added to the Upper School course catalog. • The school defined the hallmarks of an excellent CSG education by identifying six core competencies that every graduate will possess: Communicate Effectively, Think Analytically, Seek Balance and Wellness, Lead Confidently, Think Globally and Solve Problems Creatively. • We successfully completed year two of a three-year self-study for accreditation with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). The accreditation process provides us with an important opportunity for self-reflection to affirm the school’s strengths, acknowledge challenges, and establish goals for improvement. • A second, full-time Co-Director of College Counseling was added in order to continue to provide a specialized and highly individualized college counseling experience for every CSG student. • As the incubator for the start-up Her Educational Revolution (HER) Academy, CSG continued to benefit from the development of an integrated PreK-12 computer science curriculum designed expressly for girls. While HER Executive Director, Lena Furci, began the year with plans to integrate with Middle and Upper School curriculum, her dedicated efforts resulted in successful collaboration with all four of CSG’s academic divisions. • Under the leadership of newly appointed Chief Development Officer, Amy Borntrager, CSG will welcome a fresh, individualized approach to fundraising. The recently restructured Development team will prioritize the authentic, personal relationships that make CSG’s closelyknit culture so distinctive and resilient. An increased emphasis on meaningful alumnae, parent and student relations, and community engagement will reconnect the past, present, and future of CSG. • Upper School girls in Dr. Linda Swarlis’ May Program class collaborated with students and faculty at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Taraz, Kazakhstan to learn more about one another’s countries and cultures. The girls also learned Russian and Kazakh words, explored the history of the Silk Road, and studied the current Silk Road project China is supporting. • CSG’s Robotics Team, Murphy’s Outlaws, attended the 2018 Devol’s Dance Automation Summit where they heard from then Governor John Kasich and local leaders in STEM, and perused tech startup exhibits from nearly every field in STEM. • The Grace Notes traveled to New York City for the honor of performing at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall. While there, Elizabeth Fiorile ’04, Lacey Greenwalt ’04, Lexie Neuhoff Rishty ’06 and Amy Hertenstein ’02, graciously hosted a brunch at the Cornell Club, where local NYC alumnae visited with CSG students, faculty, and staff, and received a private performance by the Grace Notes. • Our Track Team took the CCL Championships in the 4x100, 4x200, and discus, and finished second in the 4x400, 200, and discus. As we celebrate these and countless other achievements of our students, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends, I hope that you take great pride in the role you have played. Whether you are a dedicated volunteer, a vocal advocate, an active recruiter, or a philanthropic investor, you are the heart of CSG. Thank you for allowing me to serve as Chair of the 2018-19 Board of Trustees. It has been a true honor. I look forward to our continued progress in the coming year. Appreciatively,

Michael P. Glimcher
