“We shall overcome” has got to be more than a memory, It’s a new resolve, to get involved in building community. “We shall overcome” has got to be more than a frame of mind, It’s working hard in our own backyard, to leave no child behind. “We shall overcome” has got to be more than a protest song, It’s a loving vow, to show somehow, we can all get along. “We shall overcome” has got to be more than a melody, It’s a one-by-one ‘til the job is done, to set all the people free. “We shall overcome” has got to be more than a freedom song, It’s confidence, being convinced that right will conquer wrong. “We shall overcome” has got to be more than a song we sing, It’s the will to fight, to make things right, so the freedom bell can ring!

Trudy Bartley ’77
Trudy Bartley is the Associate Vice President of Local Government & Community Affairs for The Ohio State University. She represents the university with local government and community by establishing relationships with community leaders, participating in community organizations and activities, and fostering community and university partnerships. Trudy is the former Executive Director of Partners Achieving Community Transformation (PACT), an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to the comprehensive redevelopment of the Near East Side neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. Prior to coming to the Ohio State University Trudy worked in the Ohio Department of Development, where she served as the Chief Operating Officer. Trudy currently represents the University on the Board of Trustees for The United Way of Central Ohio, Central Ohio Transit Authority, ADAMH, KIPP Columbus, The Neighborhood Design Center, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, Economic Development Institute (ECDI), The Matriots, and Gateway Film Center. In 2021, Trudy was presented with the Regional Leadership Award by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. Trudy is a graduate of Columbus School for Girls and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Wellesley College.
