Warning Lights Send Messages You Can’t Ignore (NAPS)—Safety on the road is no accident. For example, when a warning light illuminates on a car’s dashboard, it is alerting you to a situation that requires your attention. While not all warning lights are a sign that disaster is imminent, no warning indicator should ever be ignored. That’s the word from the experts at AAA, who encourage motorists to read their owner’s manual and know what each of the warning lights in their vehicle means. To help, they offer the following tips: Oil Pressure Light The oil pressure light is usually an oilcan symbol or the word “OIL.” It comes on when there is a drop in engine oil pressure. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on, pull off the road at the earliest

Engine Temperature Light The engine temperature light is usually a thermometer symbol or the word “TEMP.” It comes on when the engine temperature is unsafe for your vehicle. If there are any signs of a cooling system leak, pull off the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut off the engine and call for assistance. Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Charging System Light The charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word “ALT” or “GEN.” It comes on when the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied power by the alternator.

Check Engine Light The check engine light comes on when there is a problem affecting the vehicle’s exhaust emissions. If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. However, if the check engine light begins flashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is over-heating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis. Disregarding a flashing check engine light could start a fire, destroy the catalytic converter and result in necessary repairs that could easily exceed $1,000.

(NAPS)—For more “green” in your wallet as well as a greener environment, save money and energy with basic vehicle maintenance. Here are five ways you can do so: 1. Drive Green—Recognize that how you drive has a lot to do with fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Jerky and aggressive driving decreases your miles per gallon and increases wear and tear on your vehicle. Minimize unnecessary miles by combining errands. 2. Get a Tune-up—Regular tune-ups and maintenance and having clean air filters will help your car pollute less and burn less gas. With a proper tune-up, you can

save 4 percent on the cost of gas and up to 40 percent by replacing a faulty oxygen sensor. Simply changing the car’s air filter can improve efficiency by 10 percent. 3. Lighten the Load—Get the junk out of the trunk and the stuff out of your car, with the exception of emergency items such as a spare tire, flares and a first-aid kit. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage. 4. Tire Checks—According to the Car Care Council, around 2 billion gallons of gas a year could be saved if the tires on every American’s car were properly inflated. Optimal tire pressure for your vehicle is listed in the owner’s manual. Tires that are

DOES GOD SEND THE STORM? “… Peace! Be still! Then the wind died down and it was completely calm” - Mark 4:39 As this article is being written, Superstorm Sandy is battering the East Coast. We call such things “Acts of God.” Does God send the storm? Trying to explain the storms of life is an exercise in futility. It is always better to concentrate on Christ rather than the storm. Consider the story of the storm at sea. In Matthew’s account, Jesus sends the disciples ahead in a boat while he retreats to the mountainside alone to pray (l4:23). While there He could see a storm coming. He saw the disciples struggling helplessly out there on the sea. He watched and waited for them to express their need to Him. God seldom rushes to save us. As long as we are sufficient unto ourselves, we won’t have Him. There is an old saying, “It is darkest just before the dawn.” It was not until “the fourth watch of the night” (Matthew l4:25 -three o’clock in the morning) that they were ready to receive Him. We think of the miracle of Jesus walking on water; but the real miracle is that He comes at just the right moment. Jesus may come in a flash of light or in common ways, such as the Sunday sermon, inspiring music or through the help of a friend. Peter went to Him but “when he saw the wind he began to sink.” When we lose sight of Jesus and instead focus on the difficulties of life, we lose our power. As Peter began to sink, he looked up again and cried, “Lord, save me.” Then we read, “Jesus immediately stretched forth his hand.” Jesus is always ready to save us when we look to Him in faith. I cannot explain the mystery of tragedy, but I will say the greatest promise of all is the promise of His presence. We can always count on God to be near us. William Barclay, the great Bible commentator of the 20th century observed, “There is much more to this story than the calming of the storm. On a deeper level, the meaning of the story is that wherever Jesus is, the storms of life become calm …” (The Gospel of Matthew, The Daily Bible Study Series). What greater peace can one have than the peace of Christ’s presence? Thank a veteran today and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. Rev. Jack passed away Thursday, November 1, 2012 at his home. Jack was born June 2, 1936 at the family home in Alamo to Clinton and Ruth (Kaylor) Stoneburner and was a lifelong resident of the area. A graduate of Otsego High School, for many years he was employed with Eaton Corp. Jack also enjoyed keeping busy by farming and tending his garden. On June 28, 1958 at the Alamo Congregational Church he married Mary Ellen Tayer, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Luanne (Joe) Locey, Mark (Kathy) Stoneburner, Scott (Kim) Stoneburner and Mary Kay (Matt) Carpenter; his grandkids, Jacob (Jenn) Williams, Stefanie Stoneburner, Mark Stoneburner, Paige Stoneburner, Amber Stoneburner, Elijah Stoneburner, Carson Stoneburner, Bryant Carpenter, Alex Carpenter, Hannah and Jacob Brinkman, and Megan Newton; great-grandkids, Ryah and Tzari Stoneburner and Coda Lawson; siblings, Arline (Elmo) Wallace, James (Shirley) Stoneburner, Harry (Norma) Stoneburner, Frank (Judy) Stoneburner, Judy (John) Hunt-Jaeger and Hugh Stoneburner; in-laws, Gerald Barber, Joy Stoneburner and Margaret Stoneburner; many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his siblings, Lucille Barber, Kenny Stoneburner, Clinton Stoneburner, Jr., Ruth Graham, Mary Knowlton and John Stoneburner. Services were held Saturday November 3, 2012, Pastor Tom Koning officiated. Burial followed at Alamo Center Cemetery. Terry passed away Monday, November 5, 2012 in Kalamazoo. He was born July 16, 1952, in Plainwell to Robert and Henrietta (Clear) Boerman and was a lifelong resident of the area. In 1979 he joined the U.S. Army, where he worked as a tank mechanic. Following his service years he began his career in small engine repair, which he loved. In his leisure time Terry enjoyed music, playing his guitar, fishing and loved taking care of stray cats. On July 7, 2007 at their home he married Mildred ‘Millie’ Carr, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Cori Boerman and Toby Boerman; 7 grandchildren; his sisters, Deb (Tim) Anderson and Dee (Pete) Krcatovich; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Karilyn “Sue” Faye (Skibbe) Lick passed away Sunday, November 4th, 2012, quietly in her sleep at the age of 58. Karilyn was born on July 17th, 1954 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Leonard and Phyllis Young. She passed away in her home in Otsego, Michigan. Sue lived a full life filled with love and compassion for her friends and family. Sue loved to teach and interact with children of all ages. Sue was an affiliate with the Fraternal Order of the Moose, Skills USA, Benton Harbor Public Schools, Grand Rapids Community College, and the State of Michigan Motorcycle Safety Training Program. Sue leaves behind her husband Steven of 15 years, her children Ken and Daisy, Andrew, and Kari. Grandma will be missed by her beloved grandchildren, Evan, Mason, and Jacob. Sue will not be forgotten by her siblings, Sharon, Leonard, Jackie, and Joseph. Sue loved and cared deeply of her family throughout the propitious and harsh times that life offers. She fought hard to keep family unity and values at the forefront of her life. A service celebrating her life was held on Thursday, November 8th, 2012 at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49009. Norma L. COUK AGE 89 - PLAINWELL

Norma passed away Saturday, November 3, 2012 in Plainwell. Mrs. Couk was born January 13, 1923, in Plainwell to Harlo and Helen (Price) Perry. For 17 years she was employed as a Librarian Assistant at Parchment Schools, retiring in 1978. In her leisure time Norma enjoyed knitting, crocheting, ceramics, family history and organizing pictures and email on her computer. On November 20, 1948 at the First Baptist Church of Plainwell she married Charles Couk, Jr., who died in 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Sherman and Karen Couk of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, Emily (Wes) Kilian, Becky (Jeremy) Toth, Corey (Kristin) Couk, Kevin Couk and Nathan Couk; four great-grandchildren and another on the way; sisters, Elaine Keith and Charleen Perry; brother, John (Dawn) Perry. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 6th at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Greg Bishop officiating. Burial took place at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Norma may be made to Life Care Center of Plainwell or Wings of Hope Hospice. Messages of condolence may be left at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com
