Scams That Target Veterans And Military Personnel Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served our country. It’s also a time when scammers come out to take advantage of our veterans and active duty military personnel. BBB wants to make sure those who serve us do not become victims of fraud.Veteran’s scams can take many forms. BBB provides the following information on different types of offers and scams that can put our Veterans at jeopardy of becoming victims of fraud, paying more for items than they should or identity theft. Types of Scams: • Look out for firms that target veterans and charge them for products and services they can receive free or at lower cost elsewhere, such as military records and forms. • Be cautious of scammers who contact veterans saying that they need to update their credit card information or other records with the Veterans Administration. The scammers then use the information to commit identity theft. • Be wary of bogus charities with names that reference the Armed Forces and seek donations. • Hang up on fraudsters calling themselves veterans advocates who try to convince veterans that they can get more benefits by transferring their investments into an irrevocable trust, which often contains unsuitable investments. • Military Loans: Flashy offers promising "up to 40% of your monthly take home pay," "guaranteed loans," "instant approval," "no credit check," "all ranks approved," often come with sky-high interest rates and hidden fees designed to bilk borrowers out of cash and damage financial security. • Housing: Ads promising military discounts and too-good-to-be-true incentives use stolen photos of legitimate rental properties to bait renters out of security deposits via money transfer schemes. • Cars: Low-priced vehicles posted on classified ad websites tout discounts for military personnel, or claim to be from soldiers who need to sell fast because they've been deployed. Schemers convince buyers to wire money; however, vehicle data is stolen. • Veterans For Hire: This scam targets our younger veterans. Scammers pose online as representatives of government contracting firms. When veterans contact them for a job, they ask for a copy of the veteran’s passport before they can officially offer them a job. Of course there is no job to offer and the con artist now has personal information that can be used for identity theft. What to do? BBB offers help: • Protect Finances: Never wire transfer money to strangers. • Check Companies and Charities: Research companies at www.bbb.org for free BBB Reliability Reports or Charity Review Reports. • Defend Computers: Avoid visiting unfamiliar sites or opening e-mails from unknown senders. Install a firewall and updated anti-virus software. • Safeguard Identities: Actively deployed military personnel can place an "active duty alert" on their credit reports to help minimize the risk of identity theft. With this alert, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires creditors and businesses to verify identities before issuing or granting credit. The Federal Trade Commission offers advice to help military families deter, detect and defend from identity theft. • Report Scams: File complaints with BBB, www.bbb.org, the FTC, www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov, or the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. “WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS …” “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16 There’s the story about a father who had ordered a tree house for his children. When it was time to assemble the tree house, he laid out all the parts on the ground and began to read the instructions. To his dismay, he discovered that the instructions were for a tree house. However, the parts were for a sailboat! The next day he sent an angry letter to the company, complaining about the mix-up. Back came this reply: “We are truly sorry for the error and the inconvenience. However, it might help to consider the possibility that somewhere there is a man who is out on a lake trying to sail your tree house!” The point is clear: To put something together, you must have the right parts and the right instructions. This is where faith comes in. As believers we are parts (members) of the body of Christ (Church) on earth. In Ephesians 4:4 we read, “You are one body and one spirit just as God has called you in one hope.” The Christian life is meant to be lived by “the Book.” For example, the Ten Commandments and Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount are woven into the fabric of western civilization. To live by God’s instructions is to live in harmony with God and others. I have spent more than two thirds of my life pointing people to Christ and to God’s Word. A banker once said to me, “All I live for is money.” I quoted from Scripture “What shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Matthew l6:26). On the other hand, I have a friend who has experienced great pain, undeserved suffering and depression. Yet he has immersed himself into a study of God’s Word. He is learning that he is not alone. God is with Him. Here is how another suffering person said it, “The scripture did not cure me, but it helped me keep perspective.” Happiness is a choice. So, when all else fails … read the instructions! Prayer: Lord help me to truly know “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). Peace to you and please join us this Sunday in a church where “Jesus’ love is lived.”

Robert L. RAYCRAFT AGE 86 - KALAMAZOO

Ray passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his home. Mr. Raycraft was born August 7, 1925 in Alma, MI to George and Hallie (Cline) Raycraft. During WWII he served his country in the Army Air Force. Robert graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. He was employed with The Upjohn Company for 21 years, retiring in 1977 and was a winner of the W.E. Upjohn Award that year. After his retirement, he enjoyed farming, golfing and wintering in FL. Robert was a member of the Westwood Church of God and had a love of God and of family. Also surviving are 2 children and their spouses Cindra (William) Walters of Battle Creek, MI and Mark (Jeri) Raycraft of Stevensville, MI; 5 grandchildren, Kenneth (Lorien) Dyke, Laine Raycraft, Lauren Raycraft, Caroline Turek, Stephanie Turek; 2 great grandchildren, Samuel and Maxwell Dyke; a sister, Gaila Sipe of Lansing; a sister-in-law, MaryAnn Raycraft of S. Carolina; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Raycraft; a brother, Thomas Raycraft; and a grandson, Matthew Dyke. A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Westwood Church of God, Pastor Thomas Tufts, Sr. officiating. Interment followed at Alamo Center Cemetery. Rev. Clement passed away Monday, November 7, 2011, in Kalamazoo. Rev. Arthur was born May 7, 1929 in Mauston, Wisconsin to Arthur J. and Ragnhild (Larson) Clement. He graduated from Mauston (WI) High School and Concordia Seminary and College of Springfield, Illinois on June 5, 1953 and that same year was ordained at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hale, Michigan. Among the churches he served was St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Parchment. He also served as Chaplain at the University of Wisconsin before retiring, and then was called out of retirement to be Chaplain at the University of Michigan. In addition, he authored 6 books. Pastor Clement was currently a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego. On July 5, 1952 in Detroit he married Carol (Ziebell), who survives. Together they had celebrated 59 years of marriage. Also surviving are three children; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother; and a sister. Preceding him in death were his parents and one grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego, Pastor Jason Thiel and Pastor Josh Olson officiating. Burial will follow at Grand Prairie Cemetary, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Contributions in memory of Pastor Clement may be made to Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego. Lorna passed away Monday, November 7, 2011 in Kalamazoo. She was born September 5, 1933 in Allegan to Earl and Irene (Finn) Seekman and was a lifelong resident of the area. A 1952 graduate of Otsego High School, Lorna touched the lives of many people. She had been employed with the Plainwell Sanitarium and then was the first Meter Maid in Otsego. Later, she owned and operated Lorna’s Fashions in Otsego before operating an Adult Foster Care Home in Martin and then one in Otsego. Lorna was a member of the Otsego Lady Elks. For many years she helped to organize and chaperone the Miss Otsego Pageant. On July 11, 1953, in Otsego, she married Joseph ‘Joe’ Pirrone, who died in 2001. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Rusty; her parents; and her brother, Dan Seekman in 2011. Surviving are her siblings, Verna Louallen of Otsego, Robert (Carol) Burrows of Mesa, AZ, Richard Seekman of Arizona City, AZ, Stanley (Renee) Seekman, Mary Ann Schiero and Karen (Jack) Campbell, all of Otsego; a sister-in-law, Carol Seekman of Otsego; many nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Diane Burkhart, Doug Dommert and Val Krogman. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews from the Pirrone side of her family, and a sister-in-law, Mary (Pirrone) Marciniak. In keeping with her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am Saturday, November 12 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Gordon Greene officiating. Contributions in memory of Lorna may be made to St. Margaret’s Catholic Church or the Michigan Parkinson Foundation. John passed away Friday, November 4, 2011, in Kalamazoo. John was born February 22, 1936 in Watson Township to John and Winnie (Zoet) Seekman and was a lifelong resident of the area. For 43 years he was employed with Plainwell Paper Company, retiring in 1998 as a truck driver. He also did excavating work as John’s Excavating. In his leisure time he enjoyed being in the woods, cutting wood, restoring antique tractors and attending auctions. He enjoyed cooking and his specialty was ham and scalloped potatoes. John loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his long time companion, Theresa Jean Sours of Otsego; his children, Jerry Seekman of Hastings, Joyce Seekman of Otsego, Jeanie (Jon) Laurin of Allegan, Joni VerHage of Plainwell and Joseph (Tina) Seekman of Centreville; his step-children, Saundra (Bob) Slotman, Nick (Toni) Rankin, Mike Rankin and Wendy (Ken) Rankin; 16 grandchildren, Sarah, Laurie, Marie, Barbie, John, Amy, Angie, Carl, Brian, Kevin, Spencer, Heather, Heidi, Ryan, Travis and Jared; 13 greatgrandchildren; siblings, Harley “Bud” Seekman, Joann Button, Dorothy Hunt and Richard Seekman; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marie, Eddie Mae and Shirley. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, November 8 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. For many years he was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #7 and retired in 1990 from WheelerBlaney. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and mowing his yard on his tractor. Bert was a loving husband and father.
