Will the Internet kill your free community paper? Did instant potatoes kill potatoes? New technologies change many things. But not everything. You may tweet, blog, surf, shop, or search online but you continue to read your free community paper. You just proved it.
because of all the noise about the Internet, is pretty obvious: your free community paper does what the Internet doesn’t. We promote connections at a local level. Free papers join readers and advertisers in ways digital media don’t.
Readership of free community papers is now higher than paid daily papers and continues to grow. Rather than being replaced by “instant” media, your local free community paper has become an important part of our neighborhood.
In fact, the local content and power of your free paper makes advertising even more effective. We are the number one medium for driving purchases. That’s important in every product category.

People have visited forests to select their Christmas trees for centuries. While tree sellers conveniently stationed in store parking lots and artificial trees displayed in various retailers have led fewer people to venture into the wilderness, the Christmas tree is still an important component of holiday celebrations.
Long before the spread of Christianity, evergreen plants and trees held special meaning for people during the winter. Boughs and garlands were hung in homes and over doors and windows to repel evil spirits and illnesses. On the winter solstice, the greenery would represent that spring would once again arrive and banish winter’s dreariness.
Germans who decorated trees inside of their homes are credited with starting Christian Christmas tree traditions during the 16th century. Early Americans were late to adopt Christmas trees because early Puritan settlers thought the tradition — as well as carols and other concepts — were Pagan influences. It took the popularity of England’s Queen Victoria and her German Prince Albert appearing around a decorated Christmas tree to eventually win over much of Europe, Canada and the United States. Trees are very popular today. According to StatisticsBrain, 10 million artificial trees are sold in the United States each year, while 34.5 million real tress are sold annually. Such trees require decorating, and the following secrets and tips can help celebrants do just that. • Prune the tree first. Be sure to shape the tree as desired, since natural trees will have branches sticking out. Wear gardening gloves to avoid being covered in sap. • Position trees away from heat sources, such as fireplaces, vents or radiators, which can cause the tree to dry out prematurely and become a fire risk.
• For added safety, anchor a tree to a wall or ceiling, so it will not tumble over onto children or curious pets. • In homage of the first German Christmas trees, decorate with natural ingredients, such as berries and pinecones. Also, use apples, nuts and marzipan candies.
• To free up more space for presents, place a narrow tree stand inside of a waterproof planting container. Place the tree inside. This will provide a more streamlined look that’s neater than a tree skirt. • The more lights the better, especially on dense trees.
• For a whimsical approach, match the tree decor to home decor and the color of furniture. • Make handcrafted ornaments with the whole family.
• Hang the most delicate pieces toward the top where they won’t be disturbed. • Step back and enjoy your handiwork, which will also give you a chance to find any blank spots that need filling in.
Tree trimming is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the holiday season, and there are no rules other than safety guidelines when it comes to decorating.

Celebrate Thanksgiving with foods from the first feast
Thanksgiving is celebrated each November in the United States and each October in Canada. People traditionally gather around the dinner table flanked by friends and extended members of their families to give thanks for the blessings they enjoyed throughout the year as they dig into a delicious feast. Turkey is typically the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal. Although turkey can be a delicious and nutritious addition to the table, individuals looking to expand their culinary horizons may want to borrow from the other foods believed to have been shared among the Plymouth Colony Pilgrims and Wampanoag natives during the 1621 feast that inspired Thanksgiving. Waterfowl - Wild turkey were available in abundance in the New World, but historians believe that, during the first Thanksgiving meal, participants likely feasted on waterfowl instead of turkey. In fact, turkey wasn’t common Thanksgiving fare until after 1800. Waterfowl, according to National Geographic, includes ducks, mallards, swans, and geese. Those looking to experiment can take a break from turkey and make duck the centerpiece of their meals this Thanksgiving.
Seafood - Plymouth, Massachusetts, is located where Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. As a result, indigenous people and the pilgrims likely relied on the bounties afforded by the ocean for their sustenance. Documentation of the first Thanksgiving by pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow indicates lobster, fish and clams were likely served. People who enjoy seafood or those who prefer to abstain from meat or poultry can embrace seafood at their Thanksgiving gathering. Fruits and vegetables - Fruits native to the region where the first Thanksgiving took place included blueberries, plums, grapes, gooseberries, raspberries, and cranberries. Cranberry sauce was an unlikely menu option because sugar that traveled over on the Mayflower was probably depleted by November 1621, according to History.com. Also, cooks didn’t begin boiling cranberries with sugar until about 50 years later. To recreate the first Thanksgiving, enjoy raw fruit as a tasty dessert, which can be healthier than sugarladen sauces. Vegetables to enjoy include onions, beans, spinach, cabbage, carrots, and corn. Corn was likely turned into cornmeal and pounded into a thick corn porridge. Experimenting with a cornmeal recipe can liven up this year’s festivities.
Turnips- Plant roots found in 1621 included parsnips and turnips, and not the popular potatoes that often accompany turkey at modern Thanksgiving gatherings. The potato was not yet popular enough among the English to warrant space on the Mayflower as it made its way to present-day North America. Purées of parsnips and turnips can be delectable on their own or used as a basis for a Thanksgiving soup.
Pumpkin custard - Although pumpkins and other gourds were available in the New World, baking was not yet popularized because of the lack of wheat flour. Instead, it is possible pilgrims would hollow out gourds, add spices with milk and honey, and then roll the gourds in hot flames to form a sort of custard. Home cooks can replicate a pumpkin custard in their kitchens and serve it in lieu of pumpkin pie. Borrowing foods from the first Thanksgiving can expand menu possibilities this November.

3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa 1/4 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup (or more) dark and white (or milk) chocolate chips (or roughly chopped chocolate)
Many people enjoy baking come the holiday season, and perhaps no dish is more synonymous with holiday baking than cookies. Children leave cookies out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, while adults may indulge and enjoy an extra cookie or two at family gatherings or holiday office parties.
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
Cookies come in all shapes and sizes, so bakers have an array of options at their disposal when planning their holiday menus. Chocolate chip cookies may be among the most popular types of cookies, and bakers who want to capitalize on that popularity while giving loved ones something a little different may want to try the following recipe for “Double Chocolate Chip Cookies” from Maxine Clark’s “Chocolate: Deliciously Indulgent Recipes for Chocolate Lovers” (Ryland, Peters & Small).
Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugars together until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla essence. Sift the flour with the cocoa and salt in a small bowl. Fold into the egg mixture with the chocolate chips. Place 4 heaping tablespoonsfuls of the mixture on the prepared heavy, nonstick baking sheet, spacing them well apart. Press down and spread out to about 1⁄4-inch thick with the back of a wet spoon or with dampened fingers (you may like to scatter some more chocolate chips over the top). Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheet for 1 minute, then transfer to a wire rack. When cool, store in an airtight container. Repeat with the remaining mixture.
Double Chocolate Chip Cookies Makes about 12 large cookies 5
tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 5 tablespoons granulated sugar 5 tablespoons light brown sugar, sifted 1 large egg, beaten 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla essence or chocolate extract (see note) 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons self-rising flour
Note: Chocolate extract is a fat-free flavoring ingredient made from a blend of roasted cacao beans, water and alcohol.

Counting down to Christmas Day means many different things to people across the globe. Although families likely have several different traditions they anticipate each year, it can be fun to incorporate some new merrymakers into the festivities. Here are some festive ideas to include in the days leading up to Christmas — a special family calendar of fun finds.
1. Annual memento: Have the kids or adults make one new handmade ornament each year. This way the tree is always evolving, and everyone can track milestones.
2. Cookie day: Devote one day to making Christmas cookies. Invite friends or family members over. Distribute some cookies to elderly neighbors. 3. Holiday classic: Spend a night in and watch a classic Christmas flick you’ve
never seen before. Streaming movie services often put classics and obscure titles into rotation during the holiday season.
4. Christmas concert: Host a gathering of children where they can sing or perform their favorite tunes for an audience. Take it on the road to a nearby nursing home.

The Hottest Toys this Holiday Season
Learn what kids are hoping to find nestled under the tree this holiday season.
Christmas and Chanukah may be celebrated toward the end of the year, but at the annual New York Toy Fair, the season for thinking about toys begins in February. This popular convention unveils the industry’s hottest trends and toys, attracting more than 1,000 exhibitors. The Toy Fair, and recommendations by toy and game industry experts around the world, like Dr. Toy and The Toy Insider, help cement which toys are likely to end up on kids’ holiday wish lists. For those shoppers who fell behind the curve and missed out on last year’s break out “Hatchimal” hit, the following figure to be the most coveted items for this year of giving. • Lego Boost: Lego continues to reinvent itself, offering add-ons to its popular building brick model. Lego Boost takes advantage of the STEM trend by enabling children to build and code any of the five models of building sets. These include a cat, robot, guitar, rover, and building machine. Or, they can use the pieces to create their own designs. The models work with an app and can be coded to make different motions and sounds.
• Melissa & Doug Scientist Role Play Costume Set: Melissa & Doug is widely recognized for its highquality wooden games sets and puzzles, but the company also delves into imaginative play costumes. This scientist role-play costume includes a beaker, a test tube, a lab coat, experiment cards, and other ingredients necessary to fuel interest in the sciences. It can be a welcome addition to any dress-up collection.
• Nerf N-Strike Elite: Nerf brand has been popular for decades, and the company continues to churn out popular items for boys and girls. The N-Strike Elite series has a number of incarnations to tempt sharpshooters. Nerf’s new AccuStrike line is designed to improve accuracy with specially crafted darts that sail straighter than the original darts. • CollEGGtibles: Building upon the Hatchimal craze
of last Christmas and early this year, Spin Master offers an addition to the very popular collectible toy niche. CollEGGtibles are much smaller than Hatchimals, but are equally fun. Smaller eggs hatch to reveal various colorful critters inside. Kids are apt to want to collect them all.
• Pie Face Sky High: Hasbro keeps reinventing the Pie Face game, their runaway hit from 2016, which was awarded “Game of the Year” by the Toy Industry Association. In the Sky High version, one player hits a lever with a mallet, hoping to deliver their opponent a face full of pie cream. These are just a handful of the industry favorites that could be the hot picks among children for holiday gifting this year. Also, keep an eye out for FisherPrice Movi, anything Star Wars, FurReal friends, Shopkins, and much more.

Even though “Silent Night” is the most recorded Christmas song in history, another tune holds the title of the bestselling holiday standard of all time. “White Christmas” was written in 1942 and reminisces about an old-fashioned Christmas celebration. The version recorded by Bing Crosby has estimated sales in excess of 100 million copies worldwide, according to “The Guinness Book of World Records.” There are various accounts as to when and where Irving Berlin wrote the song. The song was written for the 1942 movie “Holiday Inn,” starring Crosby and Fred Astaire. It became an instant classic and remains Crosby’s best-selling recording. How To Organize Office Gift Exchanges
Close-knit groups of employees commonly exchange gifts with one another come the holiday season. Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office.
Those ready to participate in office gifting can follow certain etiquette guidelines to take the anxiety out of office gifting.
• Determine if there is an office policy governing gift exchanges. Some businesses may have a specific policy in place that establishes guidelines on what makes acceptable, appropriate gifts for coworkers. The larger the company, the more specific the policy is likely to be.
In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees. Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.
• Consider the overall office climate. Is yours a relaxed working environment, or is it ultra-formal? Allow the corporate culture to play a part in your gifting

• Establish a spending limit. Spending limits let everyone know just how much to spend. Resist the urge to go above and beyond. While you may just want to be generous, others may view an expensive gift as a way to show off or an attempt to flatter a coworker or even a boss.
• Think of life outside the office. When shopping, start thinking about what your coworkers like to do when they are not at work. For example, golf enthusiasts may enjoy a box of balls or a gift certificate to play at an area course. Stick to generic gifts if you are unsure of what your coworkers do when they are not working. Personalized holiday mementos, gadgets for entertaining, items that can be used around the office or food-related gift baskets make great holiday gifts. Remember to take into account others’ religions and traditions when shopping. • Avoid gifts that are overly personal. Steer clear of giving fragrances or cosmetic products because you do not know what the other person will like. Scented products also may send the wrong message, indicating you think someone needs to cover up with an aroma. Clothing is another gift to avoid, as certain items may be seen as suggestive and you may not be in tune with the recipient’s personal style.

decisions. A gift that may be appropriate for a smaller, casual company may not be fitting for a large, rules-heavy corporation. Always let common sense prevail.
Follow certain etiquette guidelines when giving co-workers gifts. • Consider personal or handmade gifts as well. Engraved picture frames, handpicked gift baskets filled with homemade treats or gift certificates to favorite coffee shops or lunch spots in the vicinity of the office make ideal office gifts.

By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “… I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation …” Philippians 4:12
Over many years of pastoring, I have witnessed how people endure hardship and suffering. I have noticed that some are better able to handle their situation than others. I have known people who had every reason to be bitter, yet never complained. What is their secret to survival? Consider the example of Apostle Paul, founder of many churches and author of fourteen of the twenty-seven books in the New Testament. He knew imprisonment, physical persecution, shipwreck, endangerment, sleepless nights, hunger, thirst, extreme cold (II Cor. 11:23-27), and unexplained illness, also known as his “thorn in the flesh” (II Cor. 12:7). Yet he never complained. Can it be that his secret to contentment (and ours) was his relationship to God? Here’s how it works: • We recognize God as the source of our strength. • We experience God’s unconditional love (grace). • We respond to God with genuine gratitude. Here is another way of saying it: God+ God’s Grace = Gratitude
When we can see God in any situation, then we can know we are being controlled by God, not situations. It has been noted that in his letter to the Philippians, the apostle mentions Jesus by name forty times within 104 verses. Thus, Paul’s purpose was to know Christ and to make Christ known to others. Can that be said of us? True thanksgiving is being secure in our relationship to God through Jesus Christ. Remember the order … God, grace and gratitude. Prayer: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6
