QUARTERLY UPDATE

NOVEMBER 2021 ABOUT OTSEGO MAIN STREET... Otsego Main Street is a community-supported and volunteer-driven organization for people from all walks of life who are working together to revitalize our downtown. We are united in our efforts to build a special place that future generations will be proud to call their own. We share a deep-rooted love for Otsego, an affection for its history, and a passion for creating a fun, economically vibrant and visually compelling downtown at the heart of this place we call home!

RECENT EVENTS...

VOLUNTEER-LED TEAM UPDATES... DESIGN

PAVILION RIBBON CUTTING

The community gathered on a chilly autumn morning to celebrate our new riverfront pavilion with a ribbon cutting! We also formally announced the name of the pavilion: The T.O.P. Pavilion. T.O.P. stands for Together Otsego Prospers, and is a fitting name for a project that took the collective resources of our community to bring to fruition. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate and who donated time, money, or expertise to make this project a reality!

What comes next for our Design Team with the pavilion complete? Our next step is to continue with our Phase II development of our Riverfront Development Plan. We will continue to develop new, high-quality recreation assets along our riverfront where residents and visitors alike can gather, celebrate, and have fun. Phase II development plans are nearing the end of the design phase and we are excited for what comes next and think you will be too!

ECONOMIC VITALITY We invite you to visit the Economic Vitality Team on Small Business Saturday! Our Main Street welcome center will be inside Smart & Simple Discounts again this year. Park outside Smart & Simple, stop by our Main Street table to learn more about the importance of shopping small and get a free Small Business Saturday bag and a local gift guide before shopping and dining downtown! Our Shop Small Win Big event will also be coming back and running in downtown businesses from Small Business Saturday (November 27) until Hometown Christmas (December 4)!

TRAIL FOR TREATERS

We partnered with the Rotary Club of Otsego and our downtown business owners to bring Halloween to downtown Otsego! We welcomed over a thousand kids and their families to downtown. Thank you to everyone who came down and we can’t wait to do it again next year! We coordinate with external businesses and community organizations to come downtown and hand out candy, keep that in mind for next year, we’d love to have you!

OTSEGO ARTS

Otsego Arts is looking for local artists and supporters of the arts interested in bringing new arts events and programming to Otsego! We believe everyone is an artist, and want to create an arts community that embraces all artistic mediums and skill levels. Planning for 2022 projects and events is underway and will be further discussed at our meeting in January. Contact the Main Street Manager for more information, we hope to see you there!

AUTUMN BLISS

Look at those hardworking Main Street volunteers! Headed by our Design Team, volunteers gathered to decorate downtown with straw bales, cornstalks, and flowers in celebration of autumn!

UPCOMING EVENTS

VOLUNTEER WITH OTSEGO MAIN STREET Interested in making a difference in our community? WE WANT TO HELP! Reach out to the Main Street Manager to learn more about how to join one of our volunteer-led work teams, event planning committees, or assist on a special project!

Small Business Saturday November 27th

We have a place for everyone. The only requirement is a passion for revitalizing our downtown.

Shop Small Win Big November 27th thru December 4th

MESSAGE FROM OUR...

MAIN STREET MANAGER

With the holiday season upon us, I want to stress the importance of shopping small whenever possible. Every year, Otsego Main Street participates in the nationwide Shop Small effort to bring awareness to the need to support our small businesses. Shopping at locally owned businesses is not only about shopping where you get a warm welcome and unique experience, it is also a matter of economics! Last year, Americans spent nearly 20 billion dollars on Small Business Saturday. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, that 20 billion dollars in the hands of small businesses is more likely to stay in local communities, to be donated for community causes, and to lead to the creation of local jobs! Help us keep our hard-earned dollars here in Otsego by supporting our local businesses and business owners!

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

DOWNTOWN DOLLARS Give the gift of shopping local this holiday season!

Downtown Dollars are a gift certificate program that can be spent just like cash at all participating downtown businesses! Downtown Dollars are available in $5 increments and can be purchased by visiting the Main Street office.

We have officially launched our revolving internship opportunities! Our internships are designed to provide students with an opportunity to make a real difference while developing their skills. Interns will work closely with city staff, elected officials, business owners and volunteers. Internships are unpaid and students must be taking the internship for college credit. We are especially interested in students majoring public/nonprofit administration, business/ entrepreneurship, and marketing/advertising. Contact the Main Street Manager for more information!

| How to Participate in GivingTuesday

JANKE Tree Farm Farm

How can people participate in GivingTuesday?

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is widely referred to as the holiday season. Holidays such as Chanukah, Christmas and Kwanzaa all take place in this typically six-week window. During this period, there’s another, possibly lesser known, event that can elicit many of the same warm feelings generated by more recognizable holidays.

The organizers behind GivingTuesday note that the day is about all types of giving. Individuals who want to participate can donate money, food and/or clothing; start an advocacy campaign; help a neighbor; or commit an act of generosity. Participants need not make their GivingTuesday efforts part of any official event associated with the day, but those who want to can visit VolunteerMatch.org to look for volunteering opportunities in and around their communities. Employers and even local governments also may sponsor or host events on GivingTuesday. Twitter users also can use the hashtag #GivingTuesday to promote causes and/or encourage donations throughout the day. Some organizations may match users’ donations up to a predetermined dollar amount, and users can enter #GivingTuesday into the Twitter search engine to discover such efforts. Parents can even help children find ways to participate by visiting GivingTuesdaySpark.org.

GivingTuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving every year. Though that typically means the day is celebrated after the calendar turns to December, this year GivingTuesday takes place on Tuesday, November 30. What is GivingTuesday?

GivingTuesday organizers describe the event as a “movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.” GivingTuesday is often characterized as hashtag activism, which involves social media users employing Twitter hashtags to show support for a cause. Twitter hashtags do not utilize between words, so spaces GivingTuesday references adhere to this practice.

GivingTuesday is a global effort that emphasizes the power of generosity. Individuals can learn more at GivingTuesday.org.

| 2 unique ways to cook a

Thanksgiving turkey

Thanksgiving is a beloved holiday. Families may have their own unique Thanksgiving traditions, but one staple of this kickoff to the holiday season is bound to make its way to Thanksgiving dinner tables no matter how unusual families’ holiday celebrations may be: turkey. Much effort goes into picking and preparing a Thanksgiving turkey. Depending on the size of the bird, turkeys can take many hours to cook. Thanksgiving celebrants are no doubt familiar with oven-roasted turkey, which is the most traditional way to cook turkey. But this year hosts who want to expand their horizons and think beyond the oven can consider two popular alternative methods to cooking a Thanksgiving turkey. 1. Deep frying

Deep frying is a popular way to prepare foods at outdoor events. For example, stroll through the parking lot on game day and you’re liable to find football fans deep frying their favorite foods at their tailgate parties. Turkey can be deep fried and this method makes for an ideal option for hosts who want to enjoy the great outdoors while welcoming friends and loved ones to their homes. Deep frying imparts a juicy flavor that can be hard to replicate when roasting a turkey. Deep frying is a much faster way to cook a turkey than cooking it in the oven. However, deep frying also can be more dangerous, so it’s imperative that cooks remain attentive when setting up the fryer and while the turkey is frying.

Where to deep fry the turkey also bears consideration. The turkey experts at Butterball® recommend deep frying the turkey outside on a flat surface that’s far away from structures, including your home, garage, deck, etc.

The time required to deep fry a turkey will depend on the size of the bird, but experts note that it typically takes about 3 to 3.5 minutes per pound. Electric fryers may take significantly less time and they typically require less oil, so this is another option to consider. Many experts note that it’s best to deep fry turkeys that are 15 lbs. or less, as the turkey will need to be completely submerged in oil when frying. In addition, turkeys larger than 15 lbs. may cook unevenly, which can affect flavor.

2. Smoking

Smoking has grown in popularity in recent years as grills that make this method possible have become more affordable. Smoking is a “low and slow” method of cooking, so this option is ideal for people who intend to be home all day on Thanksgiving and want to infuse their birds with a smoky flavor. However, even busy hosts can still consider smoking, as electric smokers now allow cooks to remotely control the temperatures in their grills. That’s important, as smoking requires cooks to periodically check the temperature on their grills to ensure it has not dropped too low or risen too high.

Smoking a turkey typically requires maintaining a temperature between 225 and 250 F. Cooking times for smoked turkeys are typically around 30 minutes per pound, though it can take longer if the temperature is lower. Because of the extended cooking time, hosts may want to pick a turkey that weighs around 15 lbs., especially if they don’t have much experience smoking.

This Thanksgiving, hosts can try something new by deep frying or smoking their turkeys.

| Great Gifts for People Who Help You Year-Round

The holiday season is a time to connect with loved ones. Families gather during the holiday season, and friends reconnect.

Tradition reigns supreme for many people during the holiday season. Exchanging gifts is one tradition that transcends religion, as people who subscribe to various faiths exchange gifts with their loved ones during the holiday season. When making their holiday shopping lists, shoppers should make sure they don’t forget the various people who help them throughout the year. Small tokens of appreciation during the holiday season can help mailmen, teachers, hairdressers, and others know they’re appreciated. The following are some gift ideas that can help the people who help us throughout the year.

Mailman

Mail finds its way into the mailbox even when the weather outside is frightful. Mailmen spend much of their workdays outdoors braving the elements, so a gift that helps make their time outdoors more comfortable makes sense. But before gifting their mailmen, shoppers should know that there are rules governing the gifts that the mailman can and cannot accept. According to the United States Postal Service®, mailmen can accept gifts worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion. However, carriers are forbidden from accepting cash and cash equivalents. In addition, mailmen cannot accept more than $50 worth of gifts in a calendar year. Moisture wicking shirts can help mail carriers stay warm on cold days, and they’re designed to quickly move moisture away from the body to the outer layer of the shirt. Such shirts can

be worn beneath carriers’ uniforms to keep them warm and dry on cold days. Shoe inserts, a basket of sunscreen and some healthy snacks that can be eaten on-the-go are other great gifts for mail carriers. Hairdressers

Hairdressers go to great lengths to make people look good throughout the year, and those efforts should not be forgotten during the holiday season. Many hairdressers use supplies, such as scissors, they purchase on their own. A gift certificate to a salon supply wholesaler can make for a welcome gift. For those who want to pamper the people who pamper them, a gift certificate to a local spa can make for a wonderful gift for hairdressers this holiday season.

218 N. Farmer St.

Inside Otsego Historical Museum (269) 692-2336 email: otsegomainstreet@gmail.com

Educators and Caregivers

Educators and caregivers, which includes teachers, babysitters and daycare staff, do a lot for children. Their efforts should be recognized during the holiday season. School systems and daycare facilities may have rules in place governing which items staff can accept, so inquire about such policies in advance of the holiday season. When gifting babysitters, make sure gifts are age-appropriate. If a babysitter is a minor, cash may make for the best gift. For teachers and daycare workers, consider a gift certificate to a wellregarded local eatery or a school supplies store, as many teachers purchase classroom supplies with their own money.

Come the holiday season, shoppers should make sure they gift the people who help them and their families throughout the year.

The numbers don’t lie. Locally owned businesses may be classified as “small,” but they have a big impact on the national economy.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Business Employment Dynamics report, small businesses created 10.5 million net new jobs 2000 and 2019, between accounting for 65.1 percent of net new jobs created since 2000 in the United States. The Government of Canada reports that the number of small businesses in Canada in 2020 was far greater than the number of medium and large businesses, accounting for 97.9 percent of all the businesses in the country.

Supporting locally owned businesses is a great way to support a neighbor, but that’s not the only attraction. Here are several reasons to shop small.

Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, and it also keeps their employees afloat. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. Decorating is one of the joys of the holiday season. Families often decorate together, and such traditions may include dressing the Christmas tree and hanging holiday lights around the house.

A day spent making homemade ornaments is another great way to decorate and spend quality time together as a family during the holiday season. Though families can let their imaginations run wild when making ornaments at home, the following are some great starting points that can serve as springboards for holiday crafting sessions.

• Snowmen: The holiday season simply wouldn’t be the same without snowmen. Homemade snowmen can be made out of ping pong balls, which are the ideal size when making ornaments for the Christmas tree. Those who want to go a little bigger can glue wiffle balls or large polystyrene balls together or create their own papier mâché snowmen to display on mantles or on console tables in a foyer or hallway. • Santa Claus: Another staple of holiday decor, Santa Claus has inspired many a DIY holiday ornament over the years. A paper plate Santa Claus with a cotton ball beard glued on can make for a fun Christmas craft, especially for

young children who can’t wait for the big guy to appear on Christmas Eve.

• Penguins: Though they might not have a direct link to the holiday season, penguins evoke feelings of cold weather, making them an ideal addition to holiday decor schemes. Make your own penguin family using polystyrene craft balls in assorted sizes and then hang them on the tree or place them around the house. • Reindeer: Santa would not be able to

around the house. Surplus cookie cutters tend to be discarded or relegated to the miscellaneous items drawer in kitchens, but a more aweinspiring fate can await them. A coat of paint, some glitter and a little bit of string or twine is all families need to transform their extra cookie cutters into colorful tree ornaments.

get the job done each Christmas Eve without his trustworthy team of reindeer. Popsicle stick reindeer projects can be fun for kids of all ages and a great way for youngsters to recognize the efforts of Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, and, of course, Rudolph, among others. • Cookie cutters: Family baking sessions are a holiday tradition for millions of people. Though that often leads to batches upon batches of tasty cookies, it also means families tend to have a surplus of holiday cookie cutters

Holiday decorating sessions can be made even more fun when families take time to craft some DIY decorations together.

| 10 Gift Ideas for People Who Love to Cook

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 20, 2021....Phone 694-9431

Many people know someone who loves spending lots of time in the kitchen. Certain home cooks may enjoy whipping up favorite recipes, while others might get excited about experimenting with new flavors and ingredients.

A love of cooking paves the way for many different gifting opportunities. Food-related gifts also come in a wide variety of price points, making it easy for shoppers to spend as little or as much as they want. Check out these 10 gift ideas for the foodie on your holiday shopping list. 1. Sheet pans: They may not seem like the most sexy or high-tech tools of the kitchen, but sheet pans are among the most versatile. They can be used for cookies, sheet pan cakes, oven-frying cutlets or fries, or even serving as the perfect bases for candy brittles.

2. Air fryer tool set: By now many people have hopped on the air fryer bandwagon, but they may not have all of the accessories to take air frying to the next level. From spatulas to tongs to silicone brushes, an air fryer tool set can make meals even more delicious. 3. Dutch oven: You’d be hard-pressed to find a more hard-working tool in the kitchen than a Dutch oven. These heavy, often enameled cast iron vessels come in various quart sizes. They can be used to cook stews, breads, cakes, and much more. 4. Kitchen compost bin: Home cooks who

want to cut down on waste will appreciate a countertop compost bin to gather food scraps. 5. Serving board: The rise in cheese and charcuterie boards means cooks will need something attractive to serve their spreads. Wooden and stone boards are attractive when serving sliced cheeses, crackers, chutneys, and other appetizers. 6. Electric wine opener: Wine is the perfect complement to many dishes, and what easier way to open bottles than with an electric wine opener? Many are compatible with almost any bottleneck and can open several bottles on a single charge.

7. Spiralizer: The trend for pasta alternatives continues, and having a spiralizer that can turn vegetables like zucchini into spiraled “noodles” will be handy in most kitchens. 8. Apron and accessories: Home cooks need to protect their clothing in the kitchen. A fashionable apron and matching oven mitts can make a statement and keep clothes clean.

9. Meat delivery: The number of direct-tohome meat shipping providers continues to grow. Have quality cuts of meat delivered right to a home cook’s house so that he or she can cut back on trips to the store.

10. New blender: Today’s blenders can crush ice, process foods, puree, and chop foods. These versatile appliances make a welcome addition to any kitchen. Stock up on food-related gifts now for those people on your holiday shopping list who love to cook.

Did You Know?

It’s hard to hear “Deck the Halls” and not immediately be overcome by the festive nature of the holiday season. The lyrics to “Deck the Halls” were written by the Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant in 1862, and the song many people know today is a traditional Christmas carol. However, the Welsh melody that is part of the song can be traced to the 16th century and a song called “Nos Galan.” That song is not about Christmas, but rather New Year’s Eve.

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 20, 2021....Phone 694-9431

It’s easy for adults to experience a little nostalgia when holiday shopping for their children. The holiday season has long been considered a special time of year, and much of that magic can be traced to the joy kids feel when unwrapping gifts from mom, dad and, of course, Santa Claus. Many parents who now have youngsters at home grew up in the 1990s. When such moms and dads are shopping for holiday gifts this season, they might wonder what was the must-have item for them back when they anxiously awaited the arrival of Christmas morning? to According Insider.com, who worked in conjunction with the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, 1996 was the year of “Tickle Me Elmo.” This ticklish toy was the

most sought-after item of the 1996 holiday season, and it was so popular that retailers experienced shortages. Those shortages led to some surprising sales on the secondary market, with figures that will undoubtedly drop some jaws even now, a quarter century after the Tickle Me Elmo craze erupted. Though the Tickle Me Elmo doll retailed for around $30 in 1996, some parents intent on getting their youngsters the most in-demand gift that year reportedly spent more than $1,000 on a single doll. To put that latter figure into perspective, data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis indicates that the average price of a new car in 1996 was $18,525. And according to Yahoo! Finance, drivers in the market for a used car in 1996 could have purchased a 1986 four-door Oldsmobile for just over $2,600.

While the cookies are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar and water until smooth.

When the cookies are ready, remove from the oven and let cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Then, while the cookies are still warm, using even strokes, brush a light coat of glaze on the top of each cookie, evenly covering it. Let the cookies cool completely. When the glaze dries, it should leave a shiny, opaque finish. If you have used a patterned pin to make a single large plaque, cut into the desired sizes with a small, very sharp knife. The cookies will keep in an airtight container in a cool place for about 2 weeks. They do not freeze well, however, as the glaze becomes watery when they are thawed. Thankful Word Search Answers

If using a patterned rolling pin, lightly dust the lined baking sheet with flour and transfer the dough to the pan. Lightly dust the top of the dough with flour and roll it into a rectangle about 1⁄3-inch thick with a plain pin. Then, using the patterned pin, roll over the dough with enough pressure to ensure a clear impression of the design. Trim the sides with a small knife. It is not necessary to cut into smaller sizes

Bake the cookies until lightly golden along the sides but still soft to the touch in the centers, 7 to 15 minutes. The timing will depend on the size of the individual cookies, or if you have made a single large patterned piece that will be cut after baking.

Unwrap the dough and place on a floured work surface. If using a plaque with a design, roll out the dough 1⁄3inch thick, lightly dust the top with flour, press your cookie molds over the dough, and then cut out the shapes with a small knife and place on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Alternatively, using the mold as a guide, cut around it with a small knife, flip the mold over so the design is facing you, and place the dough over it, pressing it into the design. Unmold the shapes onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between them.

| How to make the most of Small Business Saturday

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078....HOLIDAY GUIDE...November 20, 2021....Phone 694-9431

Gifts and gatherings take center stage come the holiday season. The holiday season begins on Thanksgiving and continues until New Year’s Day. During that time, families gather to exchange gifts, break bread, celebrate their faith, and toast the year to come.

The good times and gatherings that are such a big part of the holiday season were absent from many celebrations in 2020. Though the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, the successful rollout of various vaccines should make the coming holiday season feel more normal. That means gift exchanges and gatherings are back in play. Savvy celebrants recognize the benefits of shopping early, and Small Business Saturday is a great chance to get back in the holiday swing of things while supporting the local businesses that make communities so unique.

reservation in advance.

• Check your social media feeds. Many small businesses have recognized the value of communicating directly with consumers through their social media feeds. Throughout the day, shoppers can keep an eye on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to learn about special sales or events. In addition, shoppers can share their shopping experiences via their own feeds. Many small businesses rely on word-of-mouth from existing customers, so this can be another way to show your support for the establishments that call your community home. Small Business Saturday is a great way to begin the holiday shopping season on the right foot.

Great Gifts for Someone Special for Christmas!

• Plan ahead. Small Business Saturday takes place each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the United States. Since its inception in 2010, Small Business Saturday has grown in popularity. American Express estimates that 110 million people participated in Small Business Saturday in 2019, which underscores how shoppers can benefit from planning ahead. Research sales and inventories of local businesses you want to support so you’re ready to go come Saturday morning. Doing your homework can make it easier to navigate the crowds.

• Reserve a table at your favorite restaurant. A great meal with friends and family can be an ideal way to cap off a day of shopping, and it’s a great way to support a local restaurant. It’s worth noting that a National Today survey of 1,000 shoppers that focused on Small Business Saturday shopping habits found that food and groceries were the most popular things to buy local. Saturday is traditionally a popular night to dine out, and that popularity is even greater on Small Business Saturday. Shoppers can ensure they aren’t waiting for a table by booking a

Thanksgiving Day is one our nation’s most cherished holidays. It reminds us of our spiritual roots and inspires us to renew our faith in the living God. The image of our brave Pilgrim Fathers crossing the Atlantic (in 128 days) in their little ship in search for religious freedom is etched in our minds. They wanted to live in a place where they could worship God in accordance with their own consciences. It is not surprising that after their little ship (The Mayflower) landed in Plymouth, Mass. in December, 1621, the first public building erected was a church.

Following a harsh winter, 51 out of 102 died. Yet they paused to give thanks to God. In 1789, President George Washington made a Thanksgiving Proclamation that still stands. It has been said that Washington acknowledged “a great hand” guiding, leading, protecting and directing the formation of our nation. In other words, our nation was founded on gratitude. Recognizing the reality of God’s guidance is part of our nation’s spiritual DNA.

Marco is a wonderful dog, he is friendly, well-mannered and easy-going but still has a pep in his step. Marco would love a quieter home where he can play a little bit, or go for nice walks and then rest his sweet little head on a nice comfy bed. Marco is 8 years old and weighs 55 pounds. He would do well in a home with another dog; a nice easy-going buddy would be great! If your home already has a dog, a meet and greet at the animal shelter will be set up to make sure the dogs are a good match. Marco could also live in a home with cats. It is recommended that any children in his forever home to be 8 years old and up (only due to his age). What are you waiting for? YOU need this dog to love. Olga MESIK

AGE 99 - OTSEGO, MI Olga passed away peacefully at Vicinia Gardens, Otsego, MI on November 14, 2021. She was born at home on April 25, 1922, to Prokop “Joseph” and Eudokija “Emma” (Lytwyn) Magierka in Alamo Township, Kalamazoo, MI. Olga had four brothers and four sisters; all have preceded her in death. She always celebrated her birthday on April 24th because that is when her mother said she was born, and her father put the wrong date on her birth certificate when he went to town! Her parents operated a mint and dairy farm. They were a typical farming family that worked the farm, and everyone had their chores. Olga spent her time watching the younger children and helping her mother cook. Electricity was brought to their farm during her early high school years. Until that time she had to do her homework by candlelight or a lantern. Later in life she said that electricity was the greatest invention. She married Walter Mesik on October 19, 1940, in Chicago, IL. She met Walter through family friends her parents had while living in Chicago before she was born. Olga and Walter lived in Chicago for a couple years before settling on their farm in Alamo Township, Kalamazoo, MI. They raised cattle, chickens and then cash crops soybeans and corn while living within 4 miles of her childhood home. Walter preceded her in death. She is survived by her two sons, Walter James (Vicki) Mesik and Dennis Bruce (Inge) Mesik, five grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Olga worked at Sutherland in Kalamazoo until a corporate takeover occurred and then retired from Tru-Heat in the City of Allegan. She loved animals, she always had a cat or dog around and it really bothered her to see animals abused. Over the years she donated to many of the abused animal organizations. Olga enjoyed working around the yard in her flowerbeds or vegetable garden. Cooking was her passion. She was best known for her pedaheh (the Ukraine perogi) and handmade holubtsi (Ukraine cabbage rolls). During her lifetime she must have made thousands of them. There were very seldom any leftovers. She made sure that her family knew how to carry on her traditions, guests or family could not come and visit without eating or leaving taking food with them. She will be greatly missed. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Wishbone Pet Rescue, PO Box 124, Douglas, MI 49406 or The Medical Team Hospice Fund, 400 Ann Street N.W., Suite 104, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. In accordance with the family's wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the spring on a date close to her 100th birthday. Full details are still pending. Arrangements by McCowen & Secord Family Funeral Home Marshall - Gren Chapel, 120 Woodhams St., Plainwell, MI 49080 269-685-5881
