City Officials Joined Fifth Third Bank Staff For A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Fifth Third Bank, located at 1282 M-89, Plainwell hosted a variety of events this past week to celebrate its newly expanded building. November 16th through 18th, the community was invited to tour the new facility and visit with the bank staff. The first 53 customers each day received gift certificates and free meals from local businesses like Biggby Coffee, Chicken Coop and Player's Grill.

Friday morning the official ribbon cutting took place. The president of Fifth Third, Larry Koops, was present along with Soy Lewis, manager, and many employees. After the ribbon cutting, charitable checks were presented to Terri Shaler of Christian Neighbors, Sue Wakefield, Superintendent of Plainwell Community Schools and Mark Rollandini, the principal of Dix Street Elementary, Otsego Public Schools totaling $1000.

TRY THIS … The Christmas season often adds to our stress with financial burdens, overly busy schedules and strained relationships. Christmas has been called “the season to lose your reason.” If you are “stretched too thin,” try this remedy from Psalm 37. 1. “Fret Not.” (PSALM 37:1). In other words, stop worrying. Remember how Mark Twain once said, “Over the years, I have worried about many things, most of which never happened.” 2. “Trust in the Lord and do good.” (PSALM 37:3). A man asked Dr. Karl Menninger, “What should a person do, if he feels a nervous breakdown coming on?” The renowned psychiatrist surprised him by saying, “Lock up your house, cross the railroad tracks, find someone in need and do something to help that person.” 3. “Take delight in the Lord; and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (PSALM. 37:4) Or, in the words of Eugene H. Peterson, “Open up before God, keep nothing back; he’ll do whatever needs to be done.” (The Message). 4. “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” (PSALM 37:5). Knowing who we are in Christ and whose we are can go a long way toward releasing stress in our lives. 5. “Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him…” (PSALM 37:7) During this busy season, find time for silence and remember these familiar words (by Phillips Brooks), “How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given; so God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven.” Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I find rest and peace in your loving presence. Peace to you and please join us this Sunday in a church where “Jesus’ love is lived.”

Jeffrey H. ‘Jeff’ WATKINS

Residents of the City of Otsego

Jeff passed away Monday, November 21, 2011 in Kalamazoo. He was born June 23, 1962 in Kalamazoo, the son of Norris and Sandra (Sabo) Watkins. Jeff was a 1980 graduate of Otsego High School where he excelled in athletics. Jeff loved his family. He was very involved with his children and enjoyed auto racing. He and his father owned and operated Watkins Machine Shop until Jeff could no longer work there. On June 23, 1990 in Plainwell, he married Stephanie Warner, who survives. Also surviving are 2 children, Alexandra and Harold, both of Alamo; his parents, Norris and Sandra Watkins of Cooper Township; siblings Julie of Fitzsburg, MI, Stacie of Detroit and Matthew of Plainwell; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with his family from 6 to 8pm Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego where a memorial service will be held Saturday at 11am, Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Residents will be given carts to replace the current bins that are used to pick up Recycling. The City contracts with Bestway Disposal to collect recyclable materials the first Tuesday of each month from each home that has a recycle bin placed on the curb. During the December collection (Tuesday, December 6th), the current bins will be exchanged with carts. Please leave your bins on the curb, as it will take a few days for all bins to be exchanged. If you do not have bins and wish to participate please contact City Hall. There is no longer a need to separate recycling materials. All materials must be placed in the single cart container for pickup, materials that are not in the container, will not be picked up. The new use of the cart will allow for more materials to be placed in the single container and will allow for safer, more efficient collection of materials.

She was a 1978 graduate of Plainwell High School, enjoyed music, child care and was loved by many. On July 13, 1979 in Plainwell she married David Sinkler who survives; also surviving are 3 children, Penny (Darren) Kinsler of Kalamazoo, Phyllis (Mike) Brant of Plainwell and Dan Sinkler of Otsego; 7 grandchildren, Maliki, Damien, Trinity, Willie, Aurora, Shara and Orion; her parents, Robert and Mary DeKoekkoek; 3 brothers, Doug DeKoekkoek, Steve DeKoekkoek and Jimmy DeKoekkoek and a sister, Carol Moreno. She was preceded by a brother Denny DeKoekkoek. In keeping with her wishes cremation has taken place. Beulah passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011 in Plainwell. Mrs. Trolard was born September 15, 1914 in Bloomfield, IN to Edward and Daisy (Noel) Johnston. For 60 years Beulah grew and sold pumpkins, watermelons and onions selling them at her vegetable stand until she was 95 years old. She also raised chickens and German Shepherd dogs. On July 4, 1935 in Belleville, IL she married Hubert ‘Dutch’ Trolard who preceded her death. Surviving are 3 sons, Hubert Jr.‘Bert’ (Loretta) Trolard of Oshtemo, William (Nancy) Trolard of Alamo and James (Brenda) Trolard of Allegan; 10 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, Everett, Jay and Frank Johnston and her sisters Bessie Kalkbrenner and Mable Dexter. Services were held Tuesday, November 22 at Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego Rev. Fr. Donald P. Klingler officiating. Burial followed at Alamo Center Cemetery. Helen passed away Friday, November 18, 2011 at her son's home with her Hospice nurses and family by her side. Helen was born September 17, 1919 in Auburn, IN to Ervin and Frances (Cool) Pion. She had worked for A&P Grocery in Otsego and McPherson's Plastics, retiring in 1987. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1937, in LaGrange, IN, she married Robert Johnson, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1994. Helen is survived by her son, Robert (Elizabeth) Johnson of Hendersonville, NC; 3 grandchildren, Michael Johnson of Washington, DC, Debra (Chris) Clancy of Ludington, MI and Sarah French of Paw Paw, MI; 3 great-grandchildren, Tori and Erin Clancy and Molly French; 4 sisters, Margaret Powers, Sharon Shattuck, Cheryl (Jerry) Burd and Sally Judd; a very special sister-in-law, Mary Pion, many nieces and nephews and very attentive neighbors, Steve, Terri and Chuck. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Wesley Pion, James Pion, Alice Taylor, Howard Pion, Kay Ramp and Charles "Butch" Pion. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service and Burial of Ashes will be held at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego at a later date. Richard passed away Sunday, November 20, 2011 in Kalamazoo. Mr. Dooley was born May 10, 1944 in Kalamazoo to Robert and Patricia (Cleland) Dooley and was a lifelong resident of the area. Dick retired from ARVCO Container in 2009 after 30 years where he was a truck driver. He was a 40 year member of the Otsego Moose Lodge #345. On March 14, 1970 in Kalamazoo he married Janice King who survives. Also surviving are his children, Robin (Steve) Folk of Otsego, Leroy (Sue) Johnson of Martin, Sherry (Dave) Meyer, Dawn (John) Raulston, Robert Johnson, Richard Dooley, Jr. and Becky (Mike) Staley all of Otsego; 15 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; a sister Betsy (Bob) Scott of FL and a brother Robert (Darlene) Dooley of Beaver Island. Preceding him in death were his parents and a grandson, James Raulston. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. John passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011 in Allegan. Mr. Laster was born May 17, 1918 in Scobey, Mississippi to Benjamin and Ruth (Denmun) Laster. He served in the Army in Germany during WW II. Johnny was a Boy Scout leader, enjoyed camping, hunting and riding his tractors. He retired from Eaton Mfg. then worked for Midwest Motors. Surviving are his children, Jack (Teri) Laster of Chase, Jan (Russ) Chapman of Plainwell, Jim Laster of Allegan and Jerry (Fran) Laster of Plainwell; 11 grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. It is amazing to witness how much spirit can be wrapped in such a small body. Vixen loves to play - she is overjoyed to have you throw a ball for her to chase, or she can do it herself! Vixen is recovering from a fractured front leg that happened when she jumped up to catch a ball and landed all wrong. She has not let that slow her down however. She is a well-mannered girl away from the shelter. In fact, on the way home from the emergency animal hospital, she and the shelter manager shared a fast food snack.
