“THE PROMISE OF THE PROPHETS”

“For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given …” Isaiah 9:6
Christmas did not happen by magic. It took hundreds of years for God to prepare His people for the coming of God’s Son. Prophets were spokesmen for God. Some of them were called “Messianic Prophets” because they foretold the coming of the Messiah (“the Anointed One”). Chief among them was a prophet named Isaiah. The Old Testament book that bears his name includes prophecies of the coming of Christ. The amazing truth is there are about 250 biblical prophecies concerning the birth and life of Jesus Christ which were written hundreds of years before His birth! Every one of them was gloriously fulfilled! Examples: Jesus would be born of a virgin, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Judah, of the lineage of David at Bethlehem.
The promises of God through the prophets are just as true for us today as when they were first written. The prophet Isaiah wants us to know that in a world of darkness, the light of Christ has come! Here is a passage that is one of our Christmas favorites: Isaiah 9:6. It appears in Handel’s Messiah. “And His name will be … “Wonderful Counselor”
God rules the world not just with good words, but with sound wisdom. God is wiser than any political ideology or earthly government. Jesus is our source of wisdom (I Corinthians 1:30). God in Christ promises us wisdom when we ask for it.

Jesus gives something the world cannot give … peace (John 14:27). Most of our history is the story of conflict. God’s peace plan was promised by the angels of old who heralded our Lord’s birth (Luke 2:14). There is a great crescendo in Handel’s Messiah which makes the listeners rise to their feet. “King of Kings, forever and ever! Lord of Lord, forever and ever! And He shall reign for forever and ever! Amen! May this be our prayer as we enter into the holy season of Advent.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we are glad on that first Christmas You did not send the world a theory or an explanation. You gave us a Son! In Your strong name we pray. Amen.

Rachella Gay (Mills) MOORE AGE 79 • formerly of OTSEGO, MI
On Saturday, November 14, 2020, Rachella Gay (Mills) Moore left this earth at the age of 79 and joined her preceding family members in Heaven. Gay was the eldest daughter of Walter W. Mills and Gretchen I. (Simmons) Mills of Otsego, Michigan. Born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the family moved to Otsego when Gay was in elementary school. She graduated from Otsego High School in 1959. Gay furthered her education by putting herself through Central Michigan University (CMU), earning both a B.A. and M.A. in education. After graduating from CMU, she taught Physical Education for 32 years in Lakeview, Michigan. During that time, Mrs. Moore taught Girls P.E. at the middle school and high school, and co-Ed P.E. at the high school and elementary school. She directed the cheerleader, and Girls’ Athletic Association (GAA) programs. She was a strong backer in establishing a girls athletic program at Lakeview to include softball, basketball, volleyball, track and field. Gay married her high school sweetheart, William (Bill) L. Moore Jr. in 1962 while both were studying at CMU. They were married for 58 years, and especially enjoyed traveling together, with Hawaii being a favorite destination. Gay is survived by her loving husband, Bill, and their daughters Kimberly S. Moore Richards (Dave) and Brenda G. Moore. She is further survived by her elder brother Nelson O. Mills of Corvallis, Oregon, and their younger sister Elisa Dawn (Mills) Earle of DeWitt, Michigan. Per Gay’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial gatherings in celebration of Gay’s life will be held at Hurst Funeral Home in Greenville from 1:00 to 4:00 pm Saturday, December 5, 2020 and at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego from 1:00 to 4:00 pm Sunday, December 6, 2020. Friends and family wishing to pay respect must wear a mask and observe social distancing. While there will be no graveside services at this time, a celebration of Gay’s life will take place summer 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to a local animal shelter or humane society of one’s choice. George passed away on November 20, 2020 at 4:30pm surrounded by family at his home in Plainwell, Michigan. He was born on January 7 1934 in Allegan, Michigan and lived around the Allegan, Otsego, Plainwell and Delton area throughout his entire life. He was number five of eight kids. He began scouting with the BSA at an early age. His first Scout Master was Leo Waters of Otsego, Michigan. He later served as Scout Master for 15 years for Troop 171 in Prairieville Michigan. During his teenage years he had a fondness for convertible cars. His 1957 Ford Fairlane hardtop convertible was his favorite. He often bragged that he had the loudest car in all of Otsego. His mother in-law, Delva, would agree with that because as soon as he headed down her street, the TV reception would mess up. “George is coming!” she would yell. He married Donna Curtiss on November 26, 1955. They were happily married for 65 years. He was then drafted into the Army 7th Calvary and after basic training served in Japan for two years. He and his wife Donna bought a small one bedroom house on Pine Lake. Remodeling the house in his spare time, it expanded to a three bedroom year-round home. After retiring, they moved to Plainwell then back to Pine Lake and had a winter home in Okeechobee FL. For the past five years they have lived at Emerald Park in Plainwell. George was a lifetime fan of the Detroit Tigers spending many days listening to Tiger baseball with Ernie Harwell on the radio and on TV. George worked at Fuller Transmission/Eaton Plant in Kalamazoo 30+ years and the Stryker Plant in Kalamazoo. He retired in 1997. In his final years he did love family get-togethers, doing puzzles, playing Bingo helping out other residents, cooking and making new friends. He is survived by his wife, Donna; their three sons: George (Ruth), Barry (Michelle), and Tom (Nancy); eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sisters, Arlene (his older sister), Rose (Tootie) Treece in South Carolina; brothers, Skip (Walter), and Bob; many nieces and nephews who are scattered throughout the countryside. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Frank and Fredia; sister, Marylin Bouters; brothers, Arthur and Herb. George will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to West Michigan Cancer Center will be appreciated. Bill McClintic passed away peacefully at a nursing facility in Sweetwater, TN. on 11/11/2020 while recovering from a broken hip. Bill was born in Indianapolis, IN. He graduated from Plainwell High School in 1956 and received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Western Michigan University. He attended Berkley Divinity School in New Haven, CN. as well. He served in the Michigan Air National Guard and was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October of 1962 with the photo reconnaissance group. Bill began his career at The Brunswick Corporation Office Furniture Division mahogany row marketing department, Kalamazoo, Mi. He then went on to further his education, employment, and entrepreneurial ventures. Bill created several companies, Symbolon, a real estate environmental assessment entity, Yellow Jackets, a part-time and surge staffing company in the early 70’s before such companies existed, and Video Resources, creating self-help dvd’s for his “Kick Ass” series of interviewing for a job and resume writing. Bill was an avid and accomplished bridge player. He most recently wrote the book “Judas Remembered”. His business card read: William (Bill) McClintic, Author, Counselor, Minister, Neologist, Raconteur, Speaker, Teacher, & Theologist. He was also a loving brother, fondly remembered and greatly missed. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Ora Eston McClintic and his mother Elsa F. Larry passed away after a short illness with his family by his side. Larry loved life and lived it to its fullest. He was known for years as "The Jungle Man". If you knew Larry, then you know he most likely had a beer in his hand and always one to share. He was ready to "wheel and deal" to "make a buck". He spent many years on the family property at Schnable Lake. He loved to have a good party surrounded by his family and friends. In 1967 Larry married Anna Younger of Comstock. In 1971 they had their only child, Tammy. From the start Tammy was always a daddy's girl. Some years later they divorced yet remained friends until Anna's passing in 2011. Larry was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. After having a daughter and granddaughter, he was extremely excited to have a great-grandson who soon took on the nickname, "Popeye". They spent many days together fishing at the lake and just hanging out. Larry will be missed by many. His kind heart and sense of humor will be hard to live without. Preceding Larry in death are his parents, Viola and Arlend Thompson, brothers Raymond and Eugene and sister Diane East. Larry is survived by his furbabies Brownie and Daisey Mae; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and George Hill of Plainwell; granddaughter Telisha and David Peet of Otsego; great-grandson Joshua Peet; sister Linda and Todd Allen of Battle Creek and good friends Peter and Cooper Dyke of Plainwell. Cremation has taken place. A "shindig" in honor of Larry will take place on the family property next year.

Don passed away Monday, November 16, 2020 at his home in Kalamazoo. He was born March 2, 1935 in Kalamazoo, the son of Harold and Nina Mae (Bixler) Shumaker. Don grew up in Plainwell and graduated in 1953. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. For many years he owned and operated A-1 Disposal from 1967-1979. Don enjoyed being around people and was a member of the American Legion and Otsego Elks. On February 8, 1958 at Plainwell United Methodist Church he married Virginia Montague who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jefri Gayheart and Ken Shumaker; grandson, Ryan (Meghan Cranfill) Shumaker; greatgrandson, Maddox Shumaker along with his brother, Gerald “Jerry” Shumaker. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Richard and Kenneth “Jack” Shumaker. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in the spring. Contributions in memory of Don may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. Tammie was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on August 12, 1963, the daughter of Herbert Walker and Diana (Dailey) Sills, and was a lifelong resident of the Otsego area. She attended Otsego and Vicksburg Public Schools with the Class of 1981. Tammie loved spending time with her family, riding on Harley motorcycles, listening to music, watching and feeding the birds, and laying in the sunshine. Tammie is survived by her father; daughter, Becky Hoskinson (Cody); her son, Tommy Burkhead (Ashley Byers); grandchildren, Breanna Frampton and Nevaeh Burkhead; her siblings, Angel Clark (Pat), Mike Walker (Tamera), Wendy Bushard (Joe Spencer), Paul Walker , Samantha Barker (John), Richard (Laurie) Fowler, Louise Fowler, Stacy Shilts (Linda), Ronnie Marks (Beth), George Marks III, Cindy Marks; her companion in life, Roger Zimmerman; and many nieces and nephews. Tammie was preceded in death by her mother; stepfather, Skip Marks; brother, Roger Marks; and nephew, Mark Verploegh. A private celebration of Tammie's life will be held by the family at a later date.

Ron passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord, while residing in Grandville, MI, on Thursday, November 19, 2020. He was born in Corsica, SD, on May 21, 1930, the son of Leendert and Gertrude (Mulder) Rus. After graduating from Union High School, Grand Rapids, MI. Ronald honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War. On September 10, 1953, Ron married Jean Hiemstra, and they recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. Ron retired from General Motors Corporation after many years of dedicated service. He enjoyed spending time with family & friends, being outdoors, and going for drives. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Peter, William, Catherine Lloyd, Arena Knoper, Leonard, twin Donald, as well as his beloved granddaughter, Charity Rus. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jean, children: Norman (Linda) Rus, Timothy (Sharon) Rus, Lavonne (Craig) Rus-Ogilvie, and Jeffrey (Jean) Rus, along with nine grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. A private graveside service took place on November 23, 2020, at West Cooper Cemetery, where Ronald was laid to rest. A celebration of life will be held next year, when family and friends are able to gather. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. Don passed away Monday, November 23, 2020 at his home in Martin. He was born August 10, 1936 in Kalamazoo, the son of Morris and Dorothy (Busman) Flower. He worked for 40 years at Allied Paper in Kalamazoo until its closure. He then worked for Stryker Medical until his retirement. Don was a soft spoken, good man who would listen to all sides before forming an opinion. In his spare time he loved hunting and fishing. He was a long time member of the Martin Village Council and was a member of Lions International since 1974. On April 11, 1964 in Gary, Indiana, he married Deanna Denslaw who passed away in 2013. Surviving are his son, Bradley (Mandy) Flower of Texas and 2 grandchildren, Nathan and Olivia Flower. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial will be scheduled at a later time. Contributions in memory of Don may be made to Lions International.

Mary passed away Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born May 26, 1943 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Bernard and Inice (Fike) Dalton. Mary worked at Preferred Plastics in Plainwell for 25 years. She was an avid Coca-Cola polar bear collector and enjoyed fishing, bowling and spending winters in Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Most of all Mary loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. On December 29, 1962 she married Donald Weaver who passed away in 1985. She married Dale Weinberg and they spent 20 years together until his passing in 2006. Surviving are her children, Greg (Sherry VandenBosch) Weaver, Annette Dutton and Melissa (Scott Stephens) Weaver all of Otsego, grandchildren, Dustin, Cody, Shelby (Brenden), Faith, Schuyler (Josh) and Alex; great-granddaughter, Remi; sisterin-law, Penny Dalton along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; grandson, Joshua and siblings, Doris, Ruth Ann, Chuck, Richard and Theresa. A private family funeral will be held with Celebrant Mary Ann DeVries officiating. Burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery.
