Looking for a place to hunt? The DNR has created a collection of maps under Related Resources at mi.gov/mihunt, that identify all lands that are open to public hunting in Michigan. Hunters can click on a particular

county and see not only the state forest, wildlife management, and parks and recreation lands open to hunting that are administered by the DNR, but also all federal lands and private lands that are open to the public through the Hunting Access Program (HAP) or the Commercial Forest Act (CFA). It is the responsibility of the users of these maps to be aware of all regulations relevant to their hunting activities and hunting locations. These maps show approximate boundaries of the lands open to public hunting. Whitetail deer are the most nervous and shy of our deer. They wave their tails characteristically from side to side when they are startled and fleeing. They are extremely agile and may bound at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour through tangled terrain in a forest. Whitetail deer are also good swimmers and often enter large streams and lakes to escape predators or insects or to visit islands. Their home ranges are generally small, often a square kilometer or less. Whitetail deer do not migrate to a winter range but yard up in their own territories during heavy snow. OBITUARIES Connie RENOOS

AGE 54 – PLAINWELL, MI A beloved mother, daughter and sister, Connie passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017 at her home in Plainwell. She was born July 9, 1963 the daughter of Ronald and Barbara (Nicol) Katsma. Connie was a teacher for special needs children in the Gobles Public School System. She loved teaching and was very devoted to, and loved by her students and their families. Connie was an active member of the Encounter Church (formerly Plainwell Assembly of God) and had been a Sunday school teacher and part of the worship team. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time up north, hiking, camping, gardening, reading and hunting for rocks on the seashore. Surviving are her children, Joshua (Lindsey) Renoos of Galesburg and Audrey Renoos of Plainwell; mother, Barbara Katsma of Plainwell; siblings, Karen (Max) Raymond of Hickory Corners and Kristi Katsma of Detroit; niece, Tia (Kevin) Cox of Richland along with several extended family members. She was preceded in death by her father, Ronald Katsma. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Connie’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Encounter Church with the memorial service following at 11:00 A.M., Pastor David Alderman officiating. He was born January 18, 1938 in Plainwell the son of Thelma Nunley and William Burr Sr. William was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country overseas from 1957-1959. He attended Western Michigan University and received a degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. As an active member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, then Otsego United Methodist Church, William volunteered with Child Protective Services of Allegan County and was an advocate for environmental responsibility. He retired from Upjohn and Pharmoptima after 51 years. William devoted his life to his church, his wife, his children and grandchildren and was dedicated to serving others. On July 2, 1960 he married Barbara Hellenthal who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jeffery (Nancy) Burr of Otsego, Brian (Mary) Burr of Plainwell and Jennifer Burr of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, David, Gregory, Mason and Lauren Burr and sister, Sandra Burr. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church at 5:30pm with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial of ashes with Military Honors will take place at a later time. Contributions in memory of William may be made to the Wings Home or to Wings of Hope Hospice. BOND-ISSUED EXTENSION Early Childhood Center & 1:1 Technology

Otsego Public Schools’ refunding of bonds resulted in more than $13 million in savings in interest and cut back the payoff date from 2040 to 2034. Extending the bond payments back out to 2040 would allow the school to borrow $6.9 million for projects; that means there is still an overall savings of $6 million to taxpayers.

Potential to Expand Current Programs Partnership with Kalamazoo Nature Center Provide Childcare Services (ages 3-5) Research in nature-based education suggests access to nature and green space provides children with a myriad of cognitive, emotional and physical benefits. (Strife & Downey, 2009) • Otsego Public Schools has a vision of being able to provide universal preschool for our 3 and 4 year olds; this project, along with a $500,000 donation that would go along with it, would provide an opportunity for adjusted tuition rates to be sure that kids can have a preschool experience. • Devices for each student K-12 • Learning any time, anywhere • Otsego has two staff members who are Google Certified Educators, Teachers/Innovators and Trainers that can provide high-level professional development to our teachers for a successful 1:1 rollout without adding on training costs for the district. • Teachers can provide immediate feedback on projects and assignments in a 1:1 environment. • Our students are entering a digital world and giving them this opportunity now will ensure they are better prepared for life after graduation.
