••• RIVERFRONT PAVILION FUNDRAISER •••

OTSEGO - MASTER LEVEL - DESIGNATION YEAR: 2013

Thanks to the support of donors and the promotion through volunteers, Otsego Main Street has had a successful fundraiser for the Riverfront Pavilion! By reaching our $50,000 goal, we have qualified the pavilion for an additional $50,000 matching grant through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The pavilion will be used to enhance the City of Otsego's Farmer's Market, create festival and activity space throughout the year, and be used to shelter the downtown ice rink in the winter. Excavation and more site work will begin in the spring.

The Design Team has been busy the last few months. Working with the Fundraising Committee, volunteers helped to successfully raise $50,000 for the Riverfront Pavilion and meet the $50,000 MEDC match! During Autumn Bliss, October 12th, we decorated the downtown, and now this Saturday November 9th, we will set up the outdoor ice rink near the Otsego Museum at 218 N Farmer Street at 9am. At our next Design Team meeting, Monday, Nov. 18th at 6pm, will will be starting to take the next steps in planning the pavilion building for this spring. Everyone is always welcome to attend and join the Design Team!

Otsego Main Street will be putting on its annual Hometown Christmas event again this year on December 7th! From the Breakfast with Santa from 8am to 11am to the Christmas Tree Lighitng at 7pm, there will be activities going on all day in downtown Otsego. Be sure to stop by our local downtown businesses that day for some holiday cheer as well! Follow our event on the Otsego Main Street Facebook page for full details. We will also be having our Lights & Display and Chili Cook-Off contests that day! Pick up registration forms at 218 N. Farmer Street or at Otsego City Hall for details.

Organization and Promotion is happy to announce that we've had another successful year of running the Gus Macker Tournament and Pet Mayor Election. After a heated race, Pet Mayor Pookie won the popular vote to be Mayor for a year. Organization and Promotion is continuing weekly promotion of downtown businesses through Business of the Week postings, while also working to plan out the special event Hometown Christmas. We are looking for a new event in downtown Otsego! If you have ideas on something new we should try, make it out to the next Organization/Promotion meeting to meet other volunteers on the last Tuesday of the month, at 5:30pm, at the Otsego Museum.

HANDLE A BREAKDOWN WITH EASE Drivers expect their vehicles to safely transport them from point A to point B. But sometimes drivers find themselves stranded on the side of the road due to a breakdown. That can be an especially precarious position to be in, but knowing what to do during a breakdown can help drivers and their passengers get through such situations unscathed.

1. Find a safe spot to pull over. Whenever possible, guide the car to a shoulder or area out of the line of traffic but still visible to oncoming traffic. If the car is not drivable, enlist the help of someone to push it into a safe zone.

2. Turn on hazard lights. Esurance advises to put on hazard lights, which will warn other drivers that something is wrong. Hazard lights also may alert other motorists who might offer assistance. Once your hazard lights are on, pop the hood, which can serve as an additional alert to other drivers. 3. Engage the emergency brake. Turn the wheel away from the road and put on the emergency brake to help prevent the car from rolling.

4. Set up other warning signals. Prepared drivers keep cones, reflective triangles or flares in their cars. AARP suggests placing three warning signals. The first should be 50 feet away and directly behind the vehicle. The other two can then be placed nearer to the vehicle.

5. Remain in the vehicle. It is safer to stay in the vehicle and call for help than to get out and stand on the side of a busy roadway.

Sofie is a 10 month old lab/German Shepard mix. She was surrendered to the Allegan County Animal Shelter with her four sisters a couple of months ago. The staff has been working with her on basic obedience and she is doing great! Sofie will now sit and wait for treats, toys or to be pet. She is a sweet, loving dog, and with a little more investment in her training, she will make a wonderful companion! Sofie has been waiting patiently for her forever family to adopt her, but she has started to feel the stress of a young dog in the shelter. At this time, Sofie would love a home where she is the only pet. She may be able to live with another dog after additional training and time to adjust to her forever home. It is recommended that any kids in the home be teenagers or older. Since Sofie is under one year old, she will need to be signed up for puppy training classes before her adoption. These overwhelming statistics reflect clients that we have served this past year. 'Living with friends/family' may not seem like a crisis, but many times the location changes regularly and is not a consistent or stable living situation. There are many local people, many children, that don't know where they will be sleeping tonight. Relying on the generosity of others for a place to sleep is stressful and defeating. There are more homeless people in our area that have not come to us for help. Recent county statistics show that there are 94 homeless children in Plainwell Schools and 69 that attend Otsego Schools. “WAY TO GO!” -

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1)

There is something all of us need which God graciously gives … encouragement! Encouragement is the gift of God’s grace. The word encouragement means “to put the heart in.” (The opposite word, discouragement, means “to take the heart out.”).

Encouragement is an expression of God’s love and a sign of God’s living presence in our lives. From the time of infancy, we need that loving voice, that gentle touch, that welcome presence, that voice of experience which enables us to feel valued, supported and affirmed. It is the finest gift we can give to our children. It is why parents and grandparents show up at music concerts, athletic events, graduations, weddings and baptisms.

We can never go wrong by giving a sincere compliment. Mark Twain said, “I can live two months on a good compliment.” We never outgrow our need for encouragement. Encouragement produces kindness and kindness instills confidence. A recent well-documented study reveals that kindness is good for our health and helps us to live longer!

Did Jesus need encouragement? Yes! When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened and God said, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11). Those words not only revealed Jesus’ identity and mission, but also gave Him the confidence He was on the right path for God.

On another occasion, just before He went to Jerusalem and the cross, God appeared to Him on a mountain again saying, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him! (Luke 9:35). It was God’s way of saying “You are on the right course! Go for it!”

Jesus gave hope to the hopeless, salvation to the lost, forgiveness to sinners, light to those living in darkness, wisdom to those needing direction and encouragement to the discouraged. May we so live that at the end of the day, we will hear those immortal words, “Well, done, good and faithful servant! (Matthew 25:23)

Even those who have gone before us are cheering for us on our race! (Hebrews 12:1). Thus, we have all the encouragement we need. Can we name people in our lives who need a “way to go”?

Erma passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego. She was born October 16, 1929 in Bronson, Michigan, the daughter of James and Viola (Pierson) Snook. Erma graduated from Sturgis High School in 1947. She had worked at Harding’s Market until her retirement in 1993 and owned and operated an income tax prep service from her home for many years. Erma enjoyed crocheting, sewing, doing crafts and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in their motorhome and was a member of the Good Sam’s Camping Club. She was an active member of the Kalamazoo Baptist Church, serving in many capacities. On November 1, 1947 at her parents’ home in Sturgis she married William Tice who passed away in 2018. Surviving are her children, David (Kathi) Tice of Allegan and Wendy (David) Conner of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Jeff (Ronda) Conner, Bethany Collings, Brian Tice and Amy (Doug) Brink; 7 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Snook along with several nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Leo Snook and sisters, Ilah Liggett and Helen Magnus. Funeral services were held November 7, 2019. Pastor Greg Carlson officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Erma may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or Wings Home of Allegan. Dorothy passed away peacefully Oct. 31, 2019 at Stanford Lodge. She was born November 15, 1920. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Virginia (Bailey) Darnell and Ruth (Paul) Hazen, six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-greatgrandchild. Cremation has taken place.

Elmer passed away suddenly on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019 at home. He was born on October 8, 1930, the son of Jacob and Anna Evink. Elmer worked for many years at Sears Garage in Kalamazoo, retiring from there. He loved working on tractors of all kinds. Elmer is survived by seven children: Donald (Diane) Evink of Allegan, Anthony (Byllie) Riley of Plainwell, Dean (Amy) Evink of Allegan, Sherri Riley of Gobles, Darlene Riley of Galesburg, Duane Evink and Christy Conway of Holland and Ron (Arlene) Evink of Plainwell. Also, many brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sandra, his parents Jacob and Anna Evink, daughter Marlene Dell and many brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 10 at the Otsego Scout House, 410 E. Orleans St., Otsego from 1 p.m to 4:00 p.m.

Steven J. SEBRING AGE 69 - DELTON, MI

Steve passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at his home in Delton. He was born December 3, 1949 in Kalamazoo the son of Jerry and Marilyn (Voss) Sebring. Steve was a 1968 Loy Norrix High School graduate. He had owned and operated Sebring Roofing for over 50 years until his retirement. Steve enjoyed anything to do with the University of Michigan, hunting, fishing and golfing. He also liked tending to his apple orchard and wildflowers. Most of all Steve loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Surviving are his children, Vikki (Tom) Jager and Eric Sebring; step-son, Matthew Janke; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Emily and Braydon, his companion, Dawn King and her children and grandchildren; and his siblings, Stephanie, Beth and Cari. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jan. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M., Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the Otsego VFW Post 3030. Contributions in memory of Steve may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. Roger passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. He was born April 3, 1948 in Jackson, the son of Gerald and Doris (Shroeder) Cooper. Roger was a 1967 Napoleon High School graduate and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He had worked at Parker Hannifin for many years until his retirement. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially bass and also enjoyed going to flea markets and following the Detroit Lions. Surviving are his children, Michael (Jan) Cooper, Joshua (Crystal) Cooper, Julie (David) Cooper-McNinch and Donald Cooper; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Arvilla (John) Grennay and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 44 - PLAINWELL, MI Kevin passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at his home in Plainwell. He was born March 8, 1975 in Manistee, the son of Ken and Lois (Levickas) Skiera. Kevin graduated from Manistee High School in 1993 and from Ferris State University. He had worked at Borgess Medical Center as a CT technician for 17 years. In his free time he enjoyed snowmobiling, boating and spending time at Silver Lake dunes. Kevin was frugal and loved saving money and getting a good deal. On August 25, 2009 he married Shannon Wisnaski who survives. Also surviving are his parents, Lois Skiera and Joe Breen; brother, Keith (Shannon) Skiera; mother and father-in-law, Linda (Rick) Craner; sisters-in-law, Sarah (Dan) Spencer and Stephanie (Russ) White; extended family, Harold and Angie Immekus, Alex (Emily) Immekus, Erica (Brad) Gill uncle, John (Suri) Levickas along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ken and his grandparents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Elma (Mom) passed away on October 31, 2019 at Rose Arbor Hospice surrounded by loved ones. She was a fiery, fierce woman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who loved to read and bowl. She bowled on many leagues, even starting this season in September. Elma was a union representative while working at Meijer, an officer in the Independent Order of Foresters and loved to travel, traveling to Alaska and to bowling tournaments all over the US. Elma was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Lucille Froman; daughter, Sharon Dempsey, granddaughter, Holly Hacht; and three brothers, Rolan, Grant and Irwin. Burial took place at Mt. Everest Cemetery in Kalamazoo on Nov. 1, 2019.
