Summer and fall can stake their claim as road trip season, and even devoted drivers may admit that winter is generally a less desirable time to take to the open road The elements factor heavily into that reputation, as fewer hours of daylight, snow and ice are just some of the variables that can make it less enjoyable, and potentially more dangerous, to drive in winter
In anticipation of adverse driving conditions, vehicle owners can take various steps to prepare their cars and trucks for winter
• Upgrade your wiper blades. Perhaps nothing is compromised more than visibility when driving in winter compared to other times of year Snow makes it hard to see when driving, but fewer hours of daylight also can affect visibility In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that approximately half of all fatal crashes occur between 6 p m and 6 a m , even though the number of drivers on the road during those hours is considerably lower than it is during the daytime The difficulty of driving at night is even more significant when wiper blades are not up to the task of keeping rain and snow off drivers’ windshields Prior to winter, inspect wiper blades and upgrade them, if necessary. Streaks left on a windshield are a telltale sign that blades need to be replaced
• Purchase winter tires. Winter tires may not be necessary in regions with relatively mild winters However, drivers accustomed to winters marked by heavy snowfall and/or icy roads should consider replacing their existing tires with winter tires Many newer vehicles are now equipped with all-season tires, which the tire experts at Bridgestone note provide great performance but are not designed to handle extreme winter conditions like snow and ice Winter tires are specially designed to handle such conditions, making them a wor thy investment for drivers who live in regions where it’s not unusual to encounter snow and ice throughout the winter
• Study up on your eng ine oil. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend different g rades of oil depending on the range of temperatures a car or truck will be driven in The owner’s manual will likely indicate if the manufacturer recommends using a different type of engine oil in especially cold temperatures Even if the manual does not include such a suggestion, drivers can seek the advice of a local mechanic
• Schedule a pre-winter tuneup. Even if a vehicle is not due for a tuneup, it can be wise to have it looked over by a local mechanic before the arrival of harsh winter weather A mechanic can check the radiator, hoses and other components that could be affected by especially cold weather in the months to come If any issues are found, address them immediately. After all, it’s better to be proactive than leave yourself vulnerable to breakdowns or other issues once the mercury drops
As fall gives way to winter, drivers can take steps to keep their cars running strong and safe in the months ahead TF22A401
Maintenance intervals drivers should know
Vehicles are among the most costly expenses individuals have According to data from Kelley Blue Book, the average price paid for a new vehicle in the United States in September 2022 was $48,094 Canadian car buyers face an equally expensive reality in their country, where the average MSRP for a new car is more than $45,000
Since vehicles are such sizable investments, it behooves motorists to do as much as they can to keep their cars and trucks running smoothly Vehicle owner’s manuals typically recommend maintenance intervals and should be drivers’ first resource for information regarding how to take care of their cars and trucks But the following are some standard maintenance intervals drivers can keep in mind
3,000 miles
The 3,000-mile marker used to be the benchmark for changing oil, but modern vehicles can now go longer between oil changes However, it’s still a good idea to check other fluid levels every 3,000 miles
Windshield washer fluid, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid should all be checked every 3,000 miles and topped off if levels are low
It’s wise for drivers to per form some additional maintenance checkups every 3,000 miles Check tire pressure, inspect hoses (which should not be leaking or bulging) and clean the interior of the vehicle every 3,000 miles
5,000 miles
Many vehicle manufacturers now recommend oil changes every 5,000 miles
Tire rotations also can be par t of service visits at this interval, and drivers can ask their mechanic to check their fuel filters and batteries every 5,000 miles as well Many may already do this as par t of their comprehensive maintenance packages, but it’s still good to confirm if they do and request they do so if it’s not part of the plan
Drivers also can request that cabin air filters are inspected at this point, though they can generally last a year before they need to be replaced
Around the 5,000-mile mark, wiper blades also may begin to show signs of wear and tear, including streaking on the windshield or scratching noises when in use Each of those signs indicates the wipers need to be replaced However, drivers should take note of these signs regardless of when they
appear Some may not make it 5,000 miles before they begin to wear down In such instances, they should be replaced immediately regardless of how many miles it’s been since they were installed
10,000 miles
Some vehicles may only require oil changes every 10,000 miles That’s not uncommon in vehicles that use synthetic oil, though drivers are urged to consult their owner’s manuals
Brake pads also may need to be replaced around this time, and one telltale sign of that is a squeaking noise whenever the brakes are applied
Drivers can ask their mechanics to check the alignment of their vehicles around this interval as well Though many vehicles won’t develop alignment issues, it’s best to check for such issues every 10,000 miles or whenever a vehicle feels as though it’s pulling in one specific direction
Maintenance intervals are created to serve as a guideline for drivers Any issues that arise should still be brought to the attention of a mechanic regardless of how many miles have been added to the odometer since the most recent trip to the garage SC233733
4
factors
to consider to maintain winter safety
According to the
That means winter safety involves a consideration of a host of factors
1 Changing visibility
While slippery surfaces may contribute to some accidents, visibility can quickly change with winter weather Blowing snow can contribute to whiteout conditions In addition, fog can be hazardous to drivers, aviators and mariners and contributes to thousands of travel accidents every year, advises the National Weather Service
2. Snow removal Shoveling snow or using a snowblower are common wintertime activities Yet strenuous levels of activity in cold temperatures could put people at risk of heart attack, particularly if they are not acclimated to physical activity Always warm up prior to shoveling snow to prepare the body for exercise Go slowly and take frequent breaks Avoid twisting and tossing snow over your shoulder, which can contribute to back injuries
3 Carbon monoxide poisoning
4 Black ice Black ice is a common winter foe Black ice forms when temperatures rise above freezing during the day, melting any snow on the ground and causing surfaces to become wet If the temperature drops once more while the ground is wet, a thin, transparent sheet of ice can form Black ice also may occur if moisture in the air condenses and forms dew or fog, and then the temperature drops below freezing, says the National Weather Service Black ice gets its name because it looks black on asphalt roads However, it also can form on sidewalks and overpasses, or spots shaded by trees or other objects Slowing down and exercising extreme caution are essential
Winter is a beautiful season But it can be just as hazardous as it is awe-inspiring Taking steps to stay safe in unpredictable conditions is a necessity each winter TF20C565
Winter weather means turning up the heat or doing more indoor cooking Carbon monoxide is produced through the burning of fuel in various forms, including stoves, engines, gas ranges, portable generators, and grills The National Safety Council says carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can go undetected as it builds up in enclosed spaces Never warm up the car inside of a contained garage Do not use por table flameless chemical heaters indoors, and have furnaces, water heaters and other fuel-burning appliances checked and serviced by a qualified technician annually Be sure that carbon monoxide alarms are on every floor of the home, and take it seriously if the alarm goes off

For mer Amer ican football coach Lou Holtz said something many can identify with “I know God doesn’t send us more trouble than we can handle, bu t s o m e t i m e s I t h i n k h e ove r e s t
m
t e s my ability!”
To the contrar y, it is not about our ability It is about God’s availability God has promised to never leave us or forsake us In facing the challenges of life, God often does not change our circumstances, but changes us in the midst our circumstances As in the example of Apostle Paul’s “thor n in the flesh” (2 Cor inthians 12:7-9), God will give us more than enough grace to meet our needs
How do we apply this message to a wor ld tor n by war, weather related disasters, antisemitism and violence? How do we heal our angr y and deeply divided nation? God always provides someone to inspire our faith and strengthen our courage
The stor y of Corr ie Ten Boom (1892-1983) comes to mind She was known around the wor ld as a person of strong courage and faith She and her family of nine helped many Jews escape the Nazis dur ing Wor ld War II by hiding them in their home
Eventually betrayed by a fellow Dutch citizen, her entire family was impr isoned She was her family’s only sur vivor of the Holocaust After the war she established a center for displaced persons and other war refugees She traveled the wor ld, appear ing in more than 60 countr ies, telling her stor y She died on her 91st bir thday Corr ie Ten Boom said, “There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still ”
In other words, God gives us more than enough grace to meet our needs What do you think?
Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank You for giving us more grace than we actually need In Your strong name Amen “MORE THAN ENOUGH” “But he said to me ‘My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made

CRAFTERS WANTED
CRAFTERS WANTED
ethnicity, income, or education level, we all have one thing in common We know what it’s like to experience disappointment There are low level disappointments such as when the Chinese buffet ran out of wonton soup again or the Detroit Lions lost a game they should have won Those might sting, but they don’t crush us There are some huge disappointments in life Maybe you’re dealing with deep depression and no matter how much counseling or medicine you try, you are still weighed down with sadness so devastating you can’t even get out of bed in the morning Or maybe you and your spouse just retired You are ready to travel the world and visit the grandkids, but your spouse gets diagnosed with a progressive form of dementia That’s disappointing!
How do you think God views your disappointment? I’m confident of this: because God through Jesus Christ experienced all sorts of major human disappointments like rejection, betrayal, and abandonment, he is able to help us in our seasons of disappointment He did this for Moses in Numbers 11 Moses was disappointed in the Hebrew people who were constantly complaining about Moses They were disappointed in him, and he was disappointed in them But Moses did something unusual for humans to do when we are steeped in disappointment with God, people, or ourselves He ran to God instead of from God What does Moses do when he is extremely disappointed? He doesn’t distance himself from God, binging on Netflix and Haagen-Dazs ice cream He prays an honest to God prayer of lament
“I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me” (Numbers 11:14-15) That’s a risky but honest prayer to pray!
Applications for help with Christmas gifts are available now at
Church, and can also be found on our
page
Applications need to be returned by November 15th
We have to give Moses credit He took his disappointment to God instead of isolating himself from God When I am disappointed with God, people, or mostly myself, I tend to isolate from God and people Moses shows us a better way God can handle our disappointments and frustrations So many of us have been taught how to pray prayers of praise (God, thank you for being awesome!) and petition (God, please heal my Aunt Sally’s bunion ), but few of us feel comfortable praying prayers of lament (God, life stinks right now!) Yet, there is a book in the Bible called Lamentations Because Moses ran to God with his disappointments, he came out on the other side better not bitter His faith was not diminished but deepened because he took his angst to God Let’s do the same! Why? Because God wants not just our praise and petition, but our lamentation Jesus loves you, Pastor Lenny Luchetti
Vocalists and long-time friends, Tony Beacco and Ann Berchem, bring strong and beautiful voices to the stage in both solo and duet performances, while Keith Cahoon, former PHS Choir Director, rounds out the group with his piano accompaniment With a variety of Broadway, pop, folk, blues, jazz and originals, Beacco, Berchem and Cahoon treat their audience to a unique
concert experience!
