Faith &Hope

WHEN CHRISTMAS ISN’T MERRY “Comfort, Comfort my people says the Lord” -ISAIAH 40:1 Pastors are well aware that Christmas isn’t merry for many people. During one of my years of pastoring a church, I was averaging one funeral each week. The words of the prophet Isaiah (listed above) took on new meaning for me. Two weeks ago in our church, we remembered our loved ones who have died in the past year and lighted candles in their memory. There is a dark side which can be traced back to the first Christmas – King Herod ordering the massacre of innocent babies in Bethlehem hoping the Christ-child would be among them. This is one picture you will never see on a Christmas card and one sermon which will be rarely preached (if at all) because we would rather not think about it. Remember, Jesus was born with a price over his head. The paradox of Christmas is that the new born baby would die in order that we might have eternal life. How can we find comfort when the world around us is falling apart? Here are some words of faith and hope for you … 1. KEEP ON SINGING. Here is a name some of my readers will recognize. His name was Jesse Schwoebell, a police officer who later became a pastor. After he had suffered a stroke, he spent some time at Borgess Hospital. He could not speak, but I learned something about stroke patients. They can sing. I brought a hymnal with me to his bed side and when we sang the songs of faith (“How Great Thou Art”, etc.) he sang clearly. Nothing can silence the songs of God’s people. 2. KEEP ON BELIEVING. I recall the story of Terry Anderson, who served as a chief Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press when he was kidnapped in Beirut on March l6, l985. Upon his release on December 4, 1991, he was asked if he ever lost hope. Here is what he said, “Hard question … Of course, I had some blue moments, moments of despair, but fortunately, right after I became a hostage, one of the first things that fell into my hands was a Bible … I spent a lot of time with the Bible … and that helped me so much because the Bible is about hope; it’s about trust in God and that’s what gave me the strength to make it through each day … faith helps you to do what you have to do.” 3. KEEP ON WORSHIPPING GOD. Some people in their sorrow make a mistake by saying, “I guess I will stay away from church for a while until I get my act together.” But, in fact, it works just the opposite. Let the church be a part of the healing process. Let the prayers and gentle hugs, the songs of faith and the preaching of the gospel heal your broken heart. Do you think Christmas was merry for Joseph and Mary? Times were hard. They lived in poverty. The only gift they could afford were two turtle doves, which was considered “the offering of the poor.” Mary would become a single mother. Jesus would die young and there is that heart-breaking image of Mary at the cross. Yet they still found reason for joy. The angels sang. The shepherds praised God. The wise men brought gifts. “Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:l9). If the song of Christmas is to be sung, we must do the singing. Prayer: Even when my heart is breaking, dear Lord, help me to find room in my heart for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Lois E. STORY AGE 90 - OTSEGO

Lois passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2011, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Story was born February 22, 1921 in Allegan to Frank and Bessie (Housworth) Stevens and was a lifelong resident of the area. She graduated from Otsego High School and the American Beauty School in Kalamazoo and worked for many years as a beautician. She also worked locally for the City of Otsego elections and for Winkel Funeral Home for many years. Lois was an active member of the Otsego United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Susanna Circle and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed bowling and for 55 years bowled on leagues with longtime friends and also loved playing cards. Lois especially enjoyed her grandchildren and cheering them on in their sports. On December 22, 1943 in Otsego she married Robert ‘Bob’ Story, who died in 1999. Also preceding her in death were her parents; her brother and his wife, Lloyd and Bonnie Stevens; and a special friend, Donna Knight. Surviving are two daughters and a son, Kathleen (David) Stratton of Kalamazoo, Linda (Dene) Hadden of South Haven and Richard (Terri) Story of Otsego; seven grandchildren, Todd (Carla) Stratton, Chad (Sheryl) Stratton, Becky Stratton, Lori (Steve) Pline, Julie (Mike) Loiacano, Brent (Laura) Hadden and Ryan Story; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret (Leo) Weipert of Battle Creek; a dear friend, Avis Simless; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. George H. “Harry” THOMPSON AGE 99- COOPER

George passed away Friday, December 9, 2011 in Plainwell. Harry was born September 13, 1912 in Mystic, Iowa to Ernest and Alice (Greenall) Thompson. On April 13, 1934 Harry married Alice Dryer in Jackson, MI. Harry owned and operated Thompson’s IGA in Cooper for many years. Surviving are his son, William (Angeline) Thompson of Kalamazoo; sister, Ellen of Jackson; many nieces and nephews and greatnieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 1978; brothers, Leslie, Fred, Joe and Ed and by his sister, Phyllis. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 14 with Pastor Leigh Larson officiating. Burial followed at West Cooper Cemetery, Cooper. Kathleen (Fuller) HOLLAND AGE 88 - OTSEGO

Kathleen was a devoted Christian believer, beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. After suffering several years with Alzheimer’s dementia, she went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family on Monday, December 12, 2011. Kathleen was born August 6, 1923 in Plainwell to Herman and Marian Fuller. She graduated from Plainwell High School in 1941 and attended Western Michigan University. She was married nearly 70 years to Carl Holland who survives. Also surviving are four sons and two daughters; David (Sandy) Holland of Kalamazoo, Daniel (Lynn) Holland of Austin, TX, Donald (Cherie) Holland of Portage, Dale (Patricia) Holland, Carleen (Jim) Gilligan and Marleen VanLent all of Plainwell. She also leaves to cherish her memory 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Kathleen was a faithful member of the Otsego Baptist Church for over 66 years where she was deeply involved in many church functions with her family. She loved playing the piano and continued until a few weeks before her passing. Kathleen was also very supportive of her family in all of their school sports and music activities. Katie and her husband wintered in the Fort Myers, FL area for nearly 30 years. They were avid sailors; first on Lake Michigan and later on the Gulf of Mexico off Fort Myers Beach. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. They also enjoyed a trip to the Holy Land and cruises to the Caribbean. Katheen was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Frederick (Skeet) Fuller and Rosalie Pickett. Surviving are sisters, Phyllis Montgomery and Judy Shumaker, a brother, Herman (Mike) Fuller, sisters-in-law, Lucille Lesman and Doris Fuller; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 15 at Otsego Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Wings Home, 330 Linn St., Allegan. John Charles BEARE AGE 52 - MARTIN

John passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at his home. Mr. Beare was born April 10, 1959 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota to Norman and Eva (Pease) Beare. John grew up in South Dakota and moved to Michigan in 1998. For many years he worked as a firefighter in South Dakota and after moving to Michigan worked at TMD Machine in Plainwell for several years. He enjoyed the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing and taking walks. On April 24, 1998 he married the former Marcia Visser, who survives. Also surviving are four foster children, Sarah, Lola, Heather and BooBoo; a brother and a sister, Wesley Beare and Evangeline SmithBeare, both of Montana; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant. Friends may visit with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Watson Bible Church, with Pastor James Collison officiating. Burial will be at South Martin Cemetery. Cristian passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011 at his home. Cristian was born on December 6, 1992. For the last 10 years he had attended Hillside Learning & Behavior Center in Allegan. Surviving are his mother, Jeanette Rice of Otsego; his brother and sister and many extended family members and friends. Cremation has taken place. Burial will take place in Battle Creek at a later date.
