She always seemed to know the right things to say and do. On December 30, 1977 at the Church of Nazarene in Kalamazoo, she married John Coombs who survives. Also surviving are her children, Kristen (Brian) Barnhart of Kalamazoo, Jason Coombs of Wayland and Alyssa (Andrew Nemecek) Coombs of Wayland; 4 grandchildren, Oakley, Natalie, Paisley and Mason with another due soon; siblings, David Farris of Plainwell, Vicki (Garry) Snyder of Plainwell and Bob (Kelly) Farris of Kalamazoo along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Stephanie. Friends may visit with Debbie’s family from 5-8 PM, Friday, December 17, 2021, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Luella G. HOLMES AGE 94 - OTSEGO, MI

Luella passed away Sunday, December 12, 2021 at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego. She was born at home in Trowbridge Township in Allegan, on October 12, 1927, the daughter of George and Josephine (Harper) Kurtz. Luella was a lifelong resident of the area. She had worked at Elams Stationary, Allegan Paper Products, Fram Filters and Delano Printing in Allegan until her retirement after 30 years of service in 1990. She enjoyed lunch with her friends, taking care of her many flowers and plants and going to yard sales. Most of all she loved spending time with her extended family and enjoyed her two cats. On November 1, 1946 in Allegan, she married Merle Holmes who passed away in 2010. Luella was a longtime member of Trowbridge Methodist Church. Surviving are her children, Kathleen (Charles) Wearne of Allegan, Scott (Valerie) Holmes of Allegan and Lorna (Michael) VanLent of Otsego; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild and a very special friend, Roger Norman. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Garry; brothers, Gilbert Kurtz and Charles (Glenna) Kurtz and sister, Mable (Earl) Holmes. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Greg Carlson officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Luella may be made to Medical Team Hospice or Trowbridge Community Church.

Altha passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Ascension Borgess Hospital. She was born April 10, 1940 in Otsego, the daughter of Harold and Ethel (Emery) Laws. For many years Altha worked as a rehab tech at Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw. She also did in home childcare. Altha loved taking care of her family and her home. She was a member of the Westwood United Methodist Church and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Lawton. On December 15, 1956 she married Burdett “Sonny” Belcher who passed away in 2018. Surviving are her sons, Jeffery (Marjorie) Belcher and Scott (Heather) Belcher; 3 granddaughters, Courtney, Maureen and Zoe along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her brothers. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Altha’s life will take place in the spring. She was born January 15, 1942 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Sam and Winifred (Stapert) Smith. In her free time Janice enjoyed bowling and had been on many area leagues. She also enjoyed traveling to Israel. She was a member of Bradenton Bible Baptist Church and Cooper Baptist Church and had attended the Merson Church. On October 20, 1974 in Cooper Township she married James Leonard who survives. Also surviving are her children, Deb (Dennis) Merlau of Delton, Sheri (Joe) Fountain of Virginia and Larry (Joyce) Zuiderveen of Otsego; step-sons, Mike (Julie) Leonard of Allegan and Randy (Annette) Leonard of Kalamazoo; 20 grandchildren, Denise, Daniel, Diana, Dustin, Benjamin, Jonathon, Melissa, Jacob, Josiah, Joel, Abbie, Lisa, Nicole, Jimmy, David, Emily, Lindsey, Tony, Amy and Dravin; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Kay (Willy) Gesch of WA, Barb (Chuck) Michaels of FL and Brenda (Mike) Perton of Grand Haven along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-daughter, Sue Ann Curry. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Greg Bishop officiating. Burial followed at West Cooper Cemetery. Marcia L. MARQUES AGE 53 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Marcia went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born June 13, 1968 in Zeeland, the oldest child of Harvey and Carol (Van Kampen) Visser. She attended and graduated from Martin Public Schools, Calvin University and Western Michigan University with an MSW, and later a Bachelor of Science to pursue a career in the medical field. Marcia was instrumental in establishing the Martin Area Resource Center and served as its first Executive Director. She was currently the Executive Director of Renewed Hope Free Health Clinic in Allegan and thoroughly enjoyed working as a science educator at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo. Working with children and serving those with medical and food/housing needs was her calling. Marcia was an animal lover and served as a 4-H leader while living in Hudsonville. She loved horses and treasured the time she spent caring for, training and working with them. She also raised sheep and rabbits. She loved her two cats and the four Seeing Eye dogs she had over the years. In her free time she liked baking, reading, gardening, hand sewing and crocheting. Marcia was strong willed and determined. She inspired many people by her positive attitude and optimism. She was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma as a toddler that led to her becoming blind at the age of three. Despite this it did not keep her from fulfilling dreams and achieving goals. She challenged many stereotypes and preconceived beliefs regarding abilities of disabled individuals. On August 19, 2016 she married Victor Marques who survives. Also surviving are her parents, siblings, Dale (Amy) Visser, Barbara (Daniel) Boersma, Shannon (Sir-Thomas) Visser, Sofia Visser-Griffin, Kathy Tripp, Melissa Dalrymple, Samantha (Arsus) AlegriaVisser and Michael Kang along with many nieces, nephews a grand-niece and nephew. Marcia was preceded in death by her first husband, John Charles Beare and a brother, Michael Allison. Friends may visit with Marcia’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Monday, December 20, 2021 at the Watson Bible Church in Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Tim Farley officiating. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Marcia may be made to Renewed Hope Free Health Clinic in Allegan.

“Jesus was born into this world, not from it” – Oswald Chambers

Many of us remember what happened on Christmas Eve l968. While the world was celebrating the birth of Christ on earth, Apollo 8 Astronauts Bill Anders, Jim Lovell and Frank Borman were celebrating Christmas from outer space. They were the first humans to orbit the moon. It was called the Christmas Eve Moon Orbit. Our family, along with billions of people around the world, tuned into the live broadcast on our television sets.

We were inspired as each astronaut took their turn reading the creation account from the Bible (Genesis 1:1-10). It helped unify our country during a turbulent year. From their view, it was literally an out-of-this-world Christmas. The story of our Lord’s birth is really quite amazing. Let us consider some ways the Bible writers describe that extraordinary event.

Prophetically

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel which means ‘God with us.’” This was in fulfillment to Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 7:14.

Spiritually

The whole point of celebrating Christ’s birth is to ask Jesus to be born again in us (John 3:7). To accept Jesus Christ is to receive the greatest gift ever offered (2 Corinthians 9:15). This may be described as, well, out-of-this-world!

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to see Christmas from Heaven’s viewpoint. In Your strong name. Amen.
