“Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon …” Luke 2:25 In the Christmas story we remember the main characters such as Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, shepherds and wise men. Yet we often neglect a pivotal person in the narrative named Simeon.

We remember him as an older person who was present in the Temple when the parents of Jesus brought their Holy Child to be consecrated to the Lord. He is described as “righteous, devout and full of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 2:25). Among other things, this is a story of hope. It has been said the word hope appears ninety-seven times in the Old Testament and another eighty-three times in the New Testament. Thus hope is important. Let’s take a closer look. 1. Hope Promised

Where Volunteers Make It Happen.

Simeon was promised he would not see death until he had seen God’s Messiah (Luke 2:26). Led by the Spirit, he knew now was the time for the promise to be fulfilled. Likewise, the Holy Spirit gives us the expectation that God will see us through any situation we may be facing (Romans 8:28, 37). 2. Hope Proclaimed

Having received the promise, Simeon was ready to hold the holy child in his arms and proclaim the goodness of God (Luke 2:29-32). As a pastor, I have learned to proclaim the good news of salvation and to leave the results with God. Our role is to proclaim the hope of the gospel. God’s role is save souls. 3. Hope Perpetuated

The good news is that hope is not limited to a particular time, place or generation. The hope of God is constant, continual, unceasing and endures forever.

Let us join that mighty chorus of the saints of God, “… And He shall reign forever and ever …” Amen and Amen.

Sue passed away December 20, 2019 at her home in Otsego. She was born May 25, 1938 in Detroit, the daughter of Kenneth and Alice (Verigh) Blackwell. Sue had worked as a case worker for 20 years at the Allegan County Friend of the Court. Surviving are her sons, Jim (Tammy) Drake and Mark Drake both of Otsego; grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Drake and Rusty, Mike and Brandy Bertch and her brother, Ken Blackwell of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego at a later time. Luis M. GONZALES AGE 49 - PLAINWELL, MI

Luis passed away Thursday, December 18, 2019 at his home in Plainwell. He was born July 17, 1970 in Plainwell the son of Sotero and Maria (Delgadillo) Gonzales. Luis had worked as a lineman at Perrigo and had been the mascot for the Kalamazoo Kings. He enjoyed going to the casino and loved his dog, Sasha. Surviving are his sister, Juanita (John Richards) Boylan; niece, Kelsie Boylan and nephew, Dakota Boylan. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Victor, Miguel and Gilberto. Funeral services were held December 23, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Steve Swope officiated. Cremation followed. David Leroy KEENE AGE 66 - OTSEGO, MI

David went to be with the Lord on December 17, 2019. He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family. David was born April 14, 1953. He was very lucky he had four strong women to help him at home until God took him home. David played music every day to his two children, Edward and Sonya Keene, painted pictures, and enjoyed writing. He was just such a beautiful person and husband for 45 years. David would have been proud I found this poem in the paper that says so much about his life and mine. “Take time to think; it is the source of power. Take time to read; it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to play; it is the secret of staying young. Take time to be quiet; it is the opportunity to see God.
