Cora Lee (Corky) GREENBURG AGE 82 – PLAINWELL, MI

Richard (Dick) Sheldon MONTGOMERY AGE 84 – PLAINWELL, MI

Richard went to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Mr. Montgomery was born on June 13, 1933 in Otsego, Michigan, to William and Pearl Washburn, but was later adopted by the late Floyd and Anna (Decker) Montgomery when he was about 6 years old to raise as their own son. He worked as a roll wrapper at the James River Paper Mill in Parchment, starting in 1951. In 1953, he proudly left to serve in the United States Army, returning to working at the Paper Mill in 1955 until his retirement. Dick was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and formed many wonderful friendships within the church. He loved life and enjoyed spending time going to car shows, woodworking, gardening with his tractor and camping – especially at Shipshewana. Truth be told though, Dick’s life mainly revolved around his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The time spent with all of them was irreplaceable to him and the memories made during those times will be cherished by them all. Dick leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Alene “Nancy”; their daughters, Patricia (Ralph) Rybicki and Starr (Rich) Adams; his former wife of 25 years, Shirley Montgomery; their children, Carolyn (Joseph) Durecki, Richard (Rena) Montgomery, Donald (Laurie) Montgomery, David (Julie) Montgomery, and Kathleen (Nick) Carimi; 15 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Blanch (Archie) Howe and many cherished relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his 6 sisters, Lillian, Frances, Evelyn, June, Shirley and Eunice Marie; 1 brother, Bill Jr.; and 2 grandsons. Funeral services were held November 24, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor Daniel Ward officiated. Memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Wings of Hope Hospice. Cora passed away on November 25, 2017 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Corky was born at the William Crispe Hospital on September 21, 1935 to Leo and Mary Alice Watters. The building was later repurposed as the William Crispe Community House, an assisted living facility, where Corky had been staying since 2012 until the time of her passing. The family thank the staff and board members of William Crispe and her caregiver Anthony Bender for the excellent care she received in her later years. Corky graduated from Otsego High School in 1953 and from Albion College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Corky was a well known figure in the Plainwell community. She taught 7th grade Life Science at Plainwell Middle School for 28 years and retired in 1997. As testimony to her love of teaching, she remained a part-time substitute teacher for several years afterward. Corky was also the cheerleading coach for Plainwell High School for many years and taught swimming lessons for local youth at her home pool. She also opened up her home not only as a foster home but also as a Chesapeake Bay Retriever rescue home for dogs. She was a member of the Plainwell First United Methodist Church for much of her life and a devout Christian. Corky is survived by her two daughters, Kathi Greenburg and Susan Hall (married to Robert), and her son Michael Greenburg (married to Kimberly), her grandchildren April Bender, Darian Weaver and Margaret Hall and her great-grandchildren Chloe and Brody Bender, and Eli and Adaline Weaver. A celebration of Corky's life will be held in the Spring of 2018 at the Plainwell First United Methodist Church, 200 Park Street, Plainwell, Michigan, 49080. More detailed information on the life celebration will be posted online at www.lifestorynet.com soon. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to a memorial fund. The memorial fund will be used to help cover her medical and living expenses with the remainder going to the Boy Scouts of America. Corky was a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts and her father Leo had been a notable scoutmaster. Kaye Arlene (Hall) JACKSON AGE 68 – PLAINWELL, MI

Kaye went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, November 20 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was a beloved mom, grandma, sister, and friend who will be sorely missed. Born to William and Marjorie Hall, Kaye and her twin sister, Faye, joined this world on January 20, 1949. They were greeted by two older siblings, Marjorie Ann and Bill. She was raised in Wayland and graduated from Wayland High School in 1967. Over the years Kaye held various jobs in medical offices. For about a decade she worked at the Heart Center for Excellence where she made many friends. She most recently worked at Kalamazoo Gastroenterology Hepatology. She enjoyed bringing in delicious baked goods for the doctors there. Kaye also worked independently as a certified massage therapist. She enjoyed both of these jobs as long as she could - even after being diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Her time at Northbridge Church, where she was a member, was very important to her. Kaye loved the Lord and grew in her faith there. She was also an avid baker and will be fondly remembered for her delicious pumpkin rolls, pies, and cakes! Kaye was married to Dennis Jackson on October 30, 1970 until 2007. Together they were blessed with three children, Craig, Karen, and Carolyn. Kaye is survived by Dennis, their children, Craig (Wendy) Jackson, Karen (Jim) Raseman, and Carolyn (Steven) Wagner, her grandchildren, Kent, Peter, George, Evelyn, Miriam, Henry, Vivian, Theodore, Oliver, and Elliot Jackson and Ethan, Alex, and Liam Raseman. Kaye is also survived by her twin sister, Faye (Gary) Heintzelman. She was preceded in death by her parents and her older brother and sister. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, December 2 at Northbridge Church. Kaye's celebration of life will follow the visitation with Pastor Ray Brandon officiating. Kaye was a selfless woman. Even in her passing, she is still giving to others by donating her body for scientific research. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice (Allegan) and the Lili Ramos Scholarship Fund at Northbridge Church.

AGE 88 – PARCHMENT, MI June passed away Friday, November 24, 2017 at Butterfly Oasis in Parchment. She was born June 22, 1929 in Rockland, Maine the daughter of Leslie and Virginia (Reardon) Barton. June grew up in Maine and graduated from high school in 1947. On June 28, 1947 in Limestone, Maine she married Donald Robbins. She moved to the Flint area in 1950 and then to Kalamazoo in 1965. June spent the next several years raising her 8 children and doing thousands and thousands of loads of laundry. She was very active with the Girl Scouts of America starting with her oldest daughter and continuing through with her youngest daughter. She loved being an outdoor trainer and spent many weekends making memories at Camp Merrie-Woode with the girls. June had also spent a season as camp cook and then as a counselor. She was also camp Director at Camp Bogstone in the Manistee National Forest. June served as neighborhood Chairman and District Manager Leader of the Glowing Embers Girl Scout Council. She even persuaded her husband to volunteer. After raising her children she had worked in retail and had also worked for her daughter at Ice Cream Etc. in Kalamazoo. June had served as President of the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry for 3 years and more as a volunteer in the food bank. June loved birding and volunteered at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary as a guide. She enjoyed her yearly trip to Point Pelee in Canada with her family and friend, Margaret Black to watch the seasonal bird migrations. June enjoyed traveling and had visited all 48 continental states and collected patches for each one. She liked walking the Mackinac Bridge with her last crossing during the 50th Anniversary. June was known by her family as the energizer bunny, going and going always in a constant state of motion. She was early to rise but not always so early to bed. Surviving are her children, Jamie Wallace, Stacy Kiser, Lesley Robbins, Toby Spinner, Kelly Bates and Kerry Robbins, grandchildren, Mike, Matt, Wendy, Jennie, Carl, Becky, Brian, Robert, Tia, Sharron, David, Tori, Miranda, Anthony, Heather, Autumn, Ashley, Katie and Kelsy; several great-grandchildren and sister, Connie Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Donald Robbins Jr and Brian Robbins; siblings, Goldie Robinson and Tim Barton and special friends, Nyda and Ethel. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial mass was held November 30, 2017 at St. Margaret Catholic Church. Rev Fr Simon Manjooran officiated. Burial of ashes followed at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery. Contributions in memory of June may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Ministry of Otsego. Carolyn CASWELL AGE 73 – OTSEGO, MI

Carolyn Caswell was welcomed by the Lord November 22, 2017. The daughter of a farmer and nurse, Carl and Nellie Bierema, she graduated from Plainwell High in 1962, married in ’63 and had 3 daughters Vicki, Amy and Jenny. Carolyn was a dedicated employee at Big Top and Harding’s Market for decades. In her spare time she enjoyed working in her flower garden, playing dominos, knitting for others, hosting baby and wedding showers, and working out at her brother’s Repz Gym. Carolyn also spent many weekends with her grand children attending various seasons of sporting events for Ally and Nolan, camping, as well as visiting her daughter and grandchildren Noah and Micah in sunny Florida. Carolyn lost her daughter Amy in 1998 and husband Theron “Butch” Caswell in 2007. Her daughter Vicki Hawkins resides in East Lansing and Jenny (Brian) Smith in Ponte Vedra Beach. Carolyn’s surviving brothers and sisters are Rich Bierema, David Bierema, Janet Hoag, Joe Bierema, Anne Cetas, Jerry Bierema, Lenny Bierema, Becky Wright, and deceased brother Carl Jr. Friends and family may visit with Carolyn’s family at the Otsego United Methodist Church (223 East Allegan Street) starting at 10:00am, until the time of the memorial service at 11:00am, Saturday, December 2, 2017. AGE 81 – PLAINWELL, MI Joan has left us to return home to the Lord on November 19, 2017. She was born September 11, 1936 in Kalamazoo, MI. She retired from Crown Vantage Paper Mill of Parchment, MI. She was married to and divorced from Gerold Weston of FL and later remarried on June 18, 1977 to Carl Petersen who sadly passed away on August 13, 2008. Together they shared and raised six children. Her son, Michael Weston, retired TSgt USAFR and his wife Lorrine of Plainwell, MI, daughter, Michele Ingram and husband Steve of Plainwell, MI. Step-son MSgt Carl (Pete) Petersen and wife Judy stationed at McConnell AFB, KS, home town of Plainwell, MI and in addition step-daughters, Linda Lou Petersen (deceased), Judy L. Petersen and Katherine Harrison and husband Terry of Allegan, MI. She also left behind 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren who brought great joy to her life. She always brought fun and joy to all our family birthdays and holidays. She really enjoyed our families yearly camping days up north, MI and always looked forward to her Mother’s Day mushrooming in the forests north of Baldwin, MI. She will be missed very much by all who knew and loved her. Rest in peace, Mom. Thank you for the lifetime of memories. You will never be forgotten and will always be loved.

“A SONG OF HOPE”

Seminary professors help prepare men and women to pastor churches. Years ago I remember the story of one such professor who often told his students, “Every Sunday in your congregation there will be people who are hurting … in every sermon have a word of hope for them.” The Christmas story is the most hope-filled story ever told. It is the story of how prophets in ancient times foretold the coming of the Messiah saying such things as “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). This mighty promise was fulfilled in the testimony of John who wrote, “The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world” (John 1:9).

We have been talking about the songs of Christmas. Here is one example of a song of hope. In l741, spiritual darkness visited the soul of a man who would become world famous. He was a musician. One night he stumbled blindly down a street in London. He had fallen on hard times and was filled with great despair. Jealous rivalries, ill health and depleted income made him feel hopeless. He suffered what appeared to be a mild stroke.

At age sixty, he felt certain his life was about over. When he returned to his rundown home, he found a large package at the door. When he opened it he found the words to a new piece of sacred music from his friend Charles Jennens. Jennens asked him to write the music for it. As he was leafing carelessly through the text he came upon the words of Isaiah, the prophet, which would change his life forever. “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. He looked for someone to have pity on him, but there was no one to comfort him” (Isaiah 53:3). Those words about Jesus described the turmoil in his soul.

With a growing feeling of kinship, he read about how He trusted God and God gave Him rest. He began to experience the peace of God. With a renewed sense of creativity, he picked up a pen and began to write with amazing confidence. Day after day he continued to write music. He rarely left his room and rarely ate. But in 24 days he had composed 260 pages!

When he finished he was very exhausted and went to sleep for seventeen hours! During his later years he experienced more infirmities including blindness, but he would never cave into depression again. And that is the story of how George Frederick Handel wrote The Messiah, one of the greatest and most loved sacred music ever written. It was the music of hope based on the Old Testament prophesy of Jesus the Messiah. A song of hope: and our world desperately needs it. Prayer: O God, fill my heart with hope. Amen.
